Hi All, I’m not Nigerian but I hope it’s ok to ask a few questions - there is so much knowledge in this thread!! I am pregnant and looking to give birth in the USA. I am eligible for ESTA so I don’t believe I will have any visa issues. I’d like to bring my MIL along and she will need one but hopefully I can work out a tourist visa for her.

My main concern is lying about my objective at the POE, I was considering saying I was on a baby moon but everyone in the thread seems to straight up say they are coming to deliver. Doesn’t that risk being denied entry? When I have travelled to the States as a tourist they are mean enough, let alone as a pregnant woman on a mission.

Also, I am having trouble figuring out where to give birth. Hawaii is the closest state to me, is there anyone with info about giving birth there? My second preference would be NYC because that’s the only city where I know a local.

Doctores Para Ti seems to be the only website in English with a birth package, do you know of any in Hawaii or NYC? I sense from the posts that the alternative is googling hospitals and asking for their rates for non insured patients, is that right? Do you ask for these in writing and present them when you arrive, hoping to get the same numbers? If you arrive in the 7th or 8th month do you need many check ups or do you just visit the hospital for the birth?

This is a long shot but I’d love to have a water birth, is this normal in any US hospitals that you know of?

Thanks xx

I think you did the right thing declaring your true intentions at POE. You never know, it might have complicated things much later at the renewal stage. I've read scripts of people being denied because they did not state they were coming in for childbirth at POE even though they were not asked.

Completely agree with Ebony84. I think it's even wiser to declare even if one if not asked so that it would be on record so pls don't regard those 40 minutes as a waste! Also, in some cases, an earlier medical visa does not seem to be a guarantee that one would not be called for interview after a drop box application for renewal - maybe it's to ensure they're not owing on previous childbirth bills.

Hello Summerrr, being straight up at POE is always the best policy; actually many of us before getting to know this thread had considered or been advised to lie about our US childbirth intentions but this thread enlightened about that and it paid off for us at our interviews and POE! You are not likely to be denied entry if you go 'armed' (e.g. with proof of financial solvency & intention to return to ur country).
Most hospitals will require you to contact them by phone & they are the ones who will give you info on whether they also provide water birth services (most of us Nigerians just want to deliver safely & cost effectively on our hospital beds!)
You may need to ignore proximity. You can still have a good childbirth experience in a state where you don't know anybody; in fact many of us discovered that staying with friends or relatives only complicated matters.
I'm not advertising for them but doctoresparati services seem to be one of the few that don't mind you coming in as late as 36 weeks - most US doctors/hospitals prefer that you register with them much earlier so you need to consider this.

Where are you from? Seem we are from part of the world and in same boat?

As others mentioned, being true of intent is best.
Let me know where you based out of and i can provide more details as Hawaii is closer to me as well?

Good luck

Please I need help with this?

zikavonne:
Hello, has anyone had her sibling come to spend the delivery period with her rather than mother or husband?

My husband will not be available when I give birth and my mum is late. So we think it will be best my elder sister comes.

1. She doesn't have a visa. What will be her reason for travelling when asked?

2. In the ds160, who's contact information should she fill?

3. For the address section, Can she use the address of the apartment I will be staying?

4. Should she have her interview before or after my departure?

Please help..

I would advise that you declare your true intentions at the POE. I have British passport and had my baby in the states. When asked at the POE what my visit was for, I said I was there to have my baby and that it was my husband's wish for his children to be born in the states. I got stamped in for the max duration which is 90 days .I must state tho that we had prepaid hospital and doctors fees but were not asked.

Hi all, In the spirit of giving back..
I arrived at Newark airport Ney jersey on the 3rd of July with emirates. It was a long flight but i was lucky to get a seat with enuf leg room.
Going tru immigration i was abit tensed because i got my visa when i was 3 months pregnant, i went with my family with the intention of family vacation. I wasnt asked if i was pregnant. Visa's were approved for DH and my 2 kids. I had all my hospital correspondences and also sent the change of intent mail.

CBP- Good morning, whats the purpose of your trip?
Me- Vacation and Childbirth
CBP- Do u have any correspondences with the doctor?
me- Yes please.. i hand it over to him
CBP- He looks through and starts whispering to the officer beside him on if he has confirmed this type of letter before.. he replies by sayinh No. He then asks me to come with him, Secondary examination tins
After sitting for about 20 minutes,

CBP- You got this visa in february and this is July, why didnt you inform them
Me- I wasnt asked and that was not my intention at the time, however I sent a mail to them informing them
CBP- Rili, what was the response?
Me- Its not a crime to give birth in the US, bla bla bla
CBP- How much fo you hav with u
Me- 8900 cash 4000 card.
CBP- Where do you work?
Me- In an Bank
CBP- You dont earn this much, you cant afford it
Me- I do.. nd my husband works too.
CBP- how much do yoi both earn monthly

Hi dear, please I am searching for hospital, Dr, ped in new Jersey. Kindly give me details from your sister thanks
Chikacokpala:
Good morning my people.
Pls my sister delivered last month in New Jersey, and she said she was given a Health benefits identification card probably by Medicare for payment of her Baby's bills. Pls will that be a problem for her getting her next visa. Meanwhile they have used it to settle some if the baby's delivery bill.
Re: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 6 by Nobody: 11:23pm On Jul 18, 2018
when did you apply for drop box pls?after visa expiration or before visa expiration..Thanks
Fiwajoluwa:
This is my giving back post. i got pregnant last year and embarked on my missionary journey mid last year before then i had been to US twice and canada once. I still had valid visas at the time so didnt notify embassy on my intention to travel.

Fast forward i got in through Dulles Airport. MD and at this time i wasnt sure of hospital because again oversabi was worrying me. i had lan to either birth in NYC OR MD as i had people in both places.

Please note that i declared i came for child birth at the POE even though i was not noticed or asked about it. I have always maintained my truth whenever i needed to do anything because its always better you say the truth always. Though after i declared i was pregnant they sent me to immigration for second checking. That one lasted about 40mins

OFFICER - You said you are here for childbirth
Me - Thats correct (with my naija attitude)
officer - How much do you have on you
Me - ?
officer - How much is your hospital and doctors fee
Me -
Officer - I see you have been here twice
Me - Yes
Officer - (Looking through my other visas on my passport) Why US
Me - I have more options here and would get better family support
officer - You can go. Please bring all your receipts when next you are coming and make sure you pay all your bills
Me - Thank you. i love your glasses.
officer - Thanks ma'am

Lesson learnt, dont declare if you are not asked cos i wasted about 40mins that was unnecessary

I gave birth in maryland and the bill came to about 25k plus because MD IS VERY EXPENSIVE. This was after scouting for hospitals for about two weeks so i njust had to settle for one.

Fast forward my contractions happened in the midnight and i was rushed to the hospital. I was forming "i must do natural' and even tho i started strong i got tired half way and they rushed me for CS which added to my bill

Lessons learnt, do CS. Save yourself stress of going through the vaginal birth pain and end up being rushed to emergency. Use epidural early enough too.

Stayed in the hospital for three days and left with my well baby girl

We got back to naija three months after delivery.

I Did dropbox for my visa renewal few months ago and was called for an interview. i showed them my zero balance and was eventually renewed

consular - Why do you want to go to the us
Me - Holiday
Consular - How long?
Me - 2weeks
consular - You declared you were pregnant when you visited the last time
me - Yes (Was quite surprised reason i said dont declare if you are not asked as i think it was why i was called for an interview after dropbox)
consular - Can i see your receipts
me - hands it over \
consular -( looks thoroughly and kept writing things down)Pick up your passport in two working days
Me - Thank you

I know i will have more questions at PoE again just because i couldnt keep shut. Though i wont change a thing. I will still keep speaking my truth everytime and everywhere

note- i was a first time mom

I bless God for the journey and divine provision

Please dont go to Maryland to birth, if you do, pls plan at least 30k for doctors, hospital etc.

Please feel free to ask me questions if you want because i got a lot of information on here while embarking on mine but truth is our experiences will always be unique.

THANK YOU ALL AND GOD BLESS

Ebony84, well done, was about recommending same...I have used him previously in 2015, DR F.
so for New Jersey bound mums, google him, best of luck! and to my fellow ESTA/ NO visa needed mums, guess its best to apply wisdom at POE!
