Algeria Acquires Lethal Mach 3 Ship Hunting Missies from China; How the CX-1 Allows Algiers to Close Off the Mediterranean

By far the largest defence spender in Africa, Algeria has been a leading client for Russia and increasingly for Chinese arms in an attempt to modernise its armed forces. With a number of reports indicating that the country has acquired advanced anti access area denial systems to protect its airspace, including placing orders for both the Russian S-400 and the Chinese HQ-9B, the country has recently sought to increase its coastal defence capabilities by investing in some of the world’s quietest submarines, the Russian Kilo Class, and more recently in highly capable anti ship missiles. Developed with similar if slightly superior capabilities to the Russian-Indian Brahmos, the CX-1 cruise missile retains a 280km range and can impact enemy warships with precision at speeds of Mach 3. The missile makes use of a two stage booster and travels on a low-high-low trajectory - descending to an altitude of 10 meters above sea level when 10 kilometres away from its target. Impacting at such a low altitude makes the missile far harder to detect or to intercept. The missile’s speed of Mach 3 is more than sufficient to tear a large enemy warship in half with the sheer force of its impact, which combined with its 260kg warhead can disable if not sink almost any surface vessel with a single strike.

The induction of the CX-1 into Algerian service is a game changer for its coastal defence capabilities which will complement the considerable investments already made in air defence. With Algiers having witnessed the fate of neighbouring Libya in 2011, North Africa’s other resource rich former Soviet client and Russian-Chinese ally, which failed to arm itself adequately and as a result was devastated by a Western attack, the country has prioritised the acquisition of cutting edge asymmetric weapons systems to protect its air and sea space and thereby deter a potential Western attack. As some of the most advanced Western made air defences have recently demonstrated, even pre Vietnam War era subsonic missile designs can often prove too much to handle - and the capabilities of the CX-1 and its high survivability against enemy air defences thus allow it to pose a lethal threat to hostile warships far from Algeria’s coasts. The missile’s range allows it to target hostile warships far into the Mediterranean, giving Algeria the ability to close off the Strait of Gibraltar and the passage between Sardinia and Africa and seriously disrupt trade and undermining any Western war effort against the country.

With capabilities surpassing the Brahmos or the Russian P-800, the CX-1 is set to become a popular export worldwide which could very well outcompete rival platforms. The missile is likely to remain in Algerian service for several decades, and acquisitions of more capable anti access area denial systems, both maritime and otherwise, remain likely in future. The sale of the CX-1 demonstrates China’s fast improving position as a leading global arms exporter - one threatening to challenge both Russian and Western sales in their traditional spheres of influence. Algeria’s choice of the CX-1 over the Russia P-800 represents just one example of this, though whether this trend will continue and Chinese arms exports to the African state will grow at the expense of Russian ones remains to be seen. As by far the most modern and sophisticated military force in Africa, with a sizeable defence budget greater than that of any two other African states combined, Algeria for its part is set to continue to strengthen its defences for years to come.

Côte d’Ivoire parades Belarusian Cayman vehicles

Jeremy Binnie, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
07 August 2018

Côte d’Ivoire’s Gendarmerie revealed itself to be the first known exporter user of the Belarusian-made Cayman 4x4 light armoured vehicle when three featured in the 7 August independence day parade.

It was announced in May 2017 that the Cayman had entered service with the Belarusian military and the chairman of the country’s Military Industrial Committee said in January that at least some had been exported, although he did not reveal the customers. Russia’s Tass news agency reported on 13 July that Caymans were in the process of being delivered to an African state.

Designed for reconnaissance, escort, and patrol duties, the vehicle is made by the 140 Repair Plant in Borisov. It weighs about 7 tonnes and can carry a crew of six. A 170 hp D-245 engine made by the Minsk Motor Plant gives it a top speed of 100 km/h on paved roads. Its amphibious capability requires no preparation, with its waterjets giving it a swimming speed of 8 km/h. Its side and rear armour is said to be equivalent to STANAG 4569 Level 1 and its frontal armour equivalent to Level 2.

Côte d’Ivoire’s Gendarmerie already operates French VAB and BTR-80 armoured personnel carriers. It also displayed a BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle on a transporter during the parade.
The army, meanwhile, paraded nine new Acmat (now Arquus) Bastion armoured personnel carriers (APCs) in UN colours. Côte d’Ivoire currently has a protection company serving with the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), but this was previously seen operating old British-made Saxon APCs.”

INDIGENOUS AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE CAPABILITY GETS BOOST AS NAF SUCCESSFULLY CONDUCTS IN-HOUSE 400 HOURS INSPECTION ON F-7 AIRCRAFT

Instituting a robust maintenance culture for the sustenance of platforms and equipment serviceability is an important part of the policy thrust of the current Leadership of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). This imperative has received another boost with the successful in-house conduct of 400 hours scheduled maintenance inspection on an F-7 fighter trainer aircraft by engineers and technicians of the 131 Engineering Group (131 Engr Gp) Makurdi. This was revealed yesterday, 7 August 2018, when the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, conducted an operational visit to NAF Base Makurdi, and the proposed site for the 21 Quick Response Wing (21 QRW) in Agatu, Benue State. The CAS, who was accompanied by other senior officers from NAF Headquarters, was received by the Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal Oladayo Amao.

While briefing the CAS, the Commander 131 Engr Gp, Air Commodore Pius Oahimire, stated that the conduct of such a high level maintenance inspection by NAF personnel, without foreign assistance, was a historic achievement. He noted that the feat had only been made possible through the current NAF Leadership’s intensive human capacity development initiatives which had empowered the technicians with the necessary skills and confidence to do the job. He therefore thanked the CAS for creating the enabling environment that facilitated the realization of the feat including the provision of necessary resources and approval of special allowances for the aircraft technicians involved in the inspection. Speaking further, the Commander stated that the in-house inspection had cost the NAF N3 Million; whereas over N30 Million would have been required if done by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) or an external maintenance repair facility. The 400 hours scheduled inspection was completed in 3 weeks and involved the removal, servicing, testing and re-installation of the aircraft engine and other major components.

During the operational visit, the CAS also inspected the water treatment facility in NAF Base Makurdi which was being renovated and expanded to improve water supply to residents. The on-going work, now at about 75 per cent completion, involved increasing the reservoir capacity from 450,000 cubic litres to 1.35 Million cubic litres as well as overhaul of surface supply tanks and replacement of reticulation pipes. When completed, water supply to the Base would be boosted by over 100 per cent. The CAS later proceeded to Agatu to inspect ongoing renovation work at the proposed base site for the 21 QRW, where he expressed satisfaction with the progress and gave further directives on additional works to be done. The 21 QRW was established to enhance NAF’s response capabilities in dealing with internal security threats along the Benue-Nasarawa corridor. Before departing from Makurdi, Air Marshal Abubakar held a fruitful interactive session with officers, airmen and airwomen of NAF units in Makurdi. The CAS and other senior officers have since returned to Abuja.

Some pics of SAAF F1's with fangs out.
Would have loved to see what they'd look like after a Atlas upgrade like the Cheetah's , but with the systems and weapons Denel had in the works during the 90s. It would be interesting to see what they would do with the +/- $1.8B that was spent on the Grips.
Assuming they upgraded 36 F1's that would come to about $50mil per plane budgeted.

I personally don't think there would have been much room to maneuver on upgrades. Even if Denel pulled out all the stops, just from an airframe fatigue point of view....they wouldn't have been able to carry us up until 2030+ like Gripen is expected to do.

These are serious war crimes the French, there colonia masters are folding there hands doing nothing, likewise the rest European and western countries. If it was Nigeria there would be enough sanctions levied against us by now.

@newafricaken254 should have seen these videos and so many others, I watched some on your twitter account. there was these particular one with woman backing there babies and children at there sides been escorted into a bush part and been murdered in cold blood.

But it's not on Nigerian soil.
most of the people killed in all these videos are English speaking part in Cameroon. And they where labelled having affiliates with terrorist activities, wife and families of BHT.

Most of these allegations are false, I see these has another tribal cleansing happening in Africa.

This may be the example of a "culmination", the kind of issue I have dreaded a long time, which is why I set myself the limited task on nairaland of drawing attention to the growing media trend of burying many African ills under the Nigeria Tag. Nigerians are partly to blame for being mostly complacent about the value of facts and for sometimes exploiting this very unfair and dangerous trend in order to score points on the government of the day.

It is not a silly issue and shouldn't be dismissed, Nigeria needs to work to ensure that Nigeria does not carry the can for Africa, possibly West Africa. Look at it this way, if you don't care for Nigeria, it will be in long term interest of African nations to take responsibility for events that concerns them instead of stashing it under Nigeria.

Almost forgot its the 20th anniversary of the US embassy micro nuke bombing. I was less than 250 m away standing next to a 7 story building that shook like a tree in a gale. It actually registered as a seismic event at the Uni. My own info has it it was planted in the basement and the truck bomb was a diversion.
The whole event was most likely classic Anglo Zionist false flag-the 2nd Congo war kicked off the same week and such events serve to distract having media and the public transfixed in one direction while poo goes down in another direction. The Tutsis have always been willing Zionist agents and fyi,ex IDF serve Rwanda in the DRC.
These are the bulky man portable Special Atomic Demolition Munitions of the early 60s,only recently declassified.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2H_ifsaMSvU

They're much smaller with scalable yield of 5 to 0.01 kilotons nowadays perfect for taking out a building or a bridge with much less harmful fallout than the early weapons of decades back. In fact experts say Shlomo has used at least 2 in both Syrian and Yemen along with many 'terrorist' bomb atrocities.
Btw,a major tell is the giant crater the BBC/CNN/SKY claim was made by the blast wave of the truck bomb. Impossible since blast waves follow the line of least resistance, meaning the wave travels straight into the air. The massive hole means the micro nuke was buried. First was Khobar barracks 1996,remember? Second Islamabad 2008.
