Need your help guys.

I'm currently unemployed but I have some side hustle I do such as organizing tutorial for students and carrying out some research for publication.

On my DS-160, what is the best option to choose between UNEMPLOYED and the rest of the options (Research, student, education, others etc)? I have booked my appointment for next week but I haven't submitted my DS-160 because of this to avoid misrepresentation.

I want to submit today and I need help on this.

I think you need to go with recent pregnancy results test from reputable organizations to back up your claim. May be they need more than just word of mouth

Experienced guys in the US, do you think it is advisable to apply for Employment Authorization Document (EAD) on the basis of financial challenge? Will this not come back to haunt you when you want to renew your visa? I'm thinking that once the visa officer discovers that you applied for EAD on the basis of economic challenge, he or she will conclude that you do not have enough financial resources to support yourself, therefore your visa renewal application may be denied? What do you think, guys? Has anyone here applied for EAD on the basis of financial challenge?

Many thanks to Femi312, lagosismyhome, and sureb0yy, for your contributions on my post above. Very enlightening!!

Guys, please how much is GRE registration in Nigeria now, or where is the cheapest place to register. I checked the BY Mafit site and it shows that it now goes for 80K. Is that the cheapest you can get now?
The promise still going on at BY MAFIT at the rate of 50k with free lectures. Promo ends 15th of August .

Visa approved this morning at Lagos consulate. The way V.Os were dishing out blue paper eh I got scared to a point had to run to the toilet. Will post my transcript later. Ubah1 my God will bless you for all the corrections and mock interviews you did for me.
From what I saw this morning no matter how prepared you are you need God's favour to get a white paper.

U're very right about needing God's favour to get the white paper. I prayed more than I prepared and I was surprised my visa still got approved cos I really bluffed in my response to the questions asked

My in law visa was delayed, August 9
According to him. Here is the transcript.

V.o is a young guy in his late 20's

V o: good morning
Him: morning, so nervous because all the 4 guys in front of him were rejected by the v.o.

Before he left I told him that he should take charge and draw the v.o to his strong points.
Which was that he did is undergraduate study in Malaysia.

V.o: tell me about your program.
Him. My program is abt MBA in Intl. Biz at Cmu which is a continuation of my undergraduate degree in Malaysia.

Knock out punch
V.o: looked up, you schooled in Malaysia
Him: yes I did.

V.o: which school
Him: mentioned it

V.o: is it in the largest city in Malaysia
Him: No, it is not. The place is called Perlis

V.o: proofing to be smart. Kuala Lumpur, you said?
Him: No, it is in Perlis.

V.o: when did you graduated.
Him: last year

V o: what year
Him : Oct 29 2017

V.o: when did you come back
Him: April 2018.

all this while the v.o was nodding to his answers and typing vigorously.

V.o: is it a private or state government university
Him: a state owned

V.o; alright! Who is your sponsor.
Him: my mum

V.o: what does she do
Him: An entrepreneur she deals in real estate and.

V.o: cut him and next was blue paper.

Reason. It was written that he has no ties in Nigeria 241b or smtn. But he was not asked any question along that line. His school will resume on the 13 October. Will he need to defer or what.

Your inlaw got rejected because of the school he applied to. The rate at which applicants who apply to such one storey schools like CMU, VIU etc get rejected is high. Tell your inlaw to apply to a better school if his intent is to study.

But wait O, the ranking of CMU I just checked on Google now is a top ranked school if I'm not mistaken. Let's be careful of the advise we give out here.

It's either Carnegie Mellon University or Central Michigan University. The former is highly ranked but he didn't specify which he applied to.

While I'm not a lawyer or expert in cases like this, I just wanna give you my 2 cents. This may be a very unpopular opinion but hey, it's just an advise, so feel free to ignore it.

The law is not a black or white thing. This is why for cases you're not sure of, the advise is primarily to consult a lawyer. You'd be surprised how easy it is to get through situations that look super complex to the ordinary eye.

That being said, IMO, there is absolutely NO beyond-reasonable-doubt proof that your sister or her husband lied to the VO during their first visa interview. It's not like they have proof of a conversation they had to support a preconceived plan to do the above. People change their minds all the time. People come here just to visit for a week, meet a girl with asss so fat, decide they're not going home again, marry the girl and apply for GC, say their plans changed after they got here. Oga mi Sir, they get their GC.

In your case, maybe your sister and her husband honestly had no intention of having their baby here or visit the doctor. Suppose I were in her shoes, and I woke up one day with blood coming out of me, you think I will risk my life and die because I told one VO that I won't be seeing Doctor? No sir, I will call 911 if needed and get the best treatment and that's not a crime.

This case is not as impossible as it looks, and also you didn't tell the whole story. If they paid all bills out of pocket or whatever the case is, tell them to take all relevant documents along on their next visit to the embassy. He also has to state clearly that "No Sir, we didn't misinform the previous VO. Things happened that way because..."

If the matter pass you, your sister abi her husband, consult immigration lawyer. Better one o, not 200 Naira lawyers under bridge in Ikeja. But if I were you, I'd handle this myself sha. It's not a big deal.

Disclaimer: This is not legal advice. Please consult a lawyer for legal matters.

I can't believe that I'm reading that from you, dude you have been interviewed by the VO before and must know that they take note.

Even with zero balance receipt his sister is highly likely to be refused the next visa because the VO might have asked these two questions.. what are you going to US to do? And will you be seeking medical treatment while in US? In b1/b2 visa interviews you get asked those two questions and 3rd likely question is..are you pregnant?(if you are a woman) if failed to use those opportunities to tell the truth during the interview then you need a miracle to get that visa renewed.

Could also be California Miramar University. I believe the adviser was referring to this and not Carnegie Mellon

State all that you do :research +teaching +all other side jobs. Also, sum up the income and state it as your cumulative income.

I won't be surprised if you are the only one with this scenario. First, most people who might have used this are typically masters students who might not to need to renew their visas before the completion of their programs. Secondly, this is quite dicy because no one can say for sure or not if this will be a problem. If I were you baring any emergency, I will stay put in the US till I finish my program and able to change status. You don't need a visa to be legal in the US as a student so far you have a valid i20 and your sevis is in status.

You're right. Also, I have seen some people here before that have used this option. But they changed status later and don't need to go back to the embassy.

Just employed and not self - employed.
This is to show that you have been able to save appreciably for your future studies.
That is in addition to what your sponsor offers.

This wouldn’t be advisable any more with the new policy proposal. The Trump administration is expected to issue a proposal in coming weeks that would make it harder for legal immigrants to become citizens or get green cards if they have ever used public welfare programs.

It has always been like this. Don't use that as a excuse not to pursue your dream. Ofcourse they are making money with the refusal. If You are prepared enough and hopefully favoured to meet a V.O that's not too strict, You will scale through. So prepare well and leave the rest for God if you are not an atheist cheesy

15 years ago it was like this , 10 years same thing , 2 years ago the rate of No aka blue papers were high . 2018 same thing ......... It not new .

kfrosh:
We need to stop this self-pity or don't know what else to call it. It hurts when visa is refused but we should stop whinning about it and look for the best way to go moving forward. Generalizing it might only make you feel better for a few days but it won't take the pain away. Rate of denial has always been high here in Nigeria and will continue to be, yet some people still get their visas.

In fact, in 2011 when we were still applying, some people even came up with an hypothesis that student visa for Nigeria has reached it's quota for the year in Sept because of high rejection rate. I disagreed with them vehemently.

The case is more complicated than what you explained. A pregnant woman knows when the arrival date would be. They should have left US before or by the 3rd trimester (last 3 months). Emergency in pregnancy like you described would lead to preterm birth. But the guy didn't say they had a prem baby. So, it's a full term baby with a known arrival date. It will take a novice VO who is not supervised to agree that the baby arrival was impromptu. If one is going to get a visa in Nigeria and knows it's going to be under serious scrutiny, then one should have been truthful the first time. In 2011 in Abuja embassy, I saw a lady that had 1 child in US under disguise, denied a renewal for covering up her pregnancy and delivered in US, even with all her receipts. The guy in question should try his luck, who knows what kind of luck he has?

Thank you. This is a similar article my wife sent to me few weeks ago but which I couldn't find when I needed it to support a post here. Yes. It's serious now and they can back track to get anyone. Say no to any assisted program even if you're on a resident status.
