laphta:

I was enjoying your story still am, though I'm still at the beginning. I saw your initial comment about cultural differences but let me say this
I was shocked when I read "Nigerian army" in this part of the story. Their conversation was totally American. I am not in the army but I am sure our soldiers don't speak like that. That's not being against cultural differences, that's cultural misplacement.
Sorry if I was too harsh.
It's true. I realized that too. Thanks.
But the idea I had was a future-ish Nigeria. Not the current one we live in. Thank you for the support.

Jamal couldn't sleep that night; the buzzing of the mosquitoes and other insects in the small hole made it difficult for him to even close his eyes for the past two days. Instead he spent his time practicing with Samad. Talking of that, the last time he saw Samad was when he said he was going hunting. And that was almost five hours ago. What kind of person hunts at night?
The moonlight cast shadows all over the place. This made Jamal's skin crawl, he wasn't used to such harsh conditions.
Suddenly there was movement somewhere behind the trees forty metres from the hole. Jamal's eyes snapped wide open and his senses were suddenly on alert. He could feel his pulse and temperature rising as he quickly but quietly grabbed the gun Samad had left behind. "For emergency," he had said.
Jamal jumped out of the hole, gun held in both hands and aimed straight at the trees. He didn't hear the footsteps at his seven o'clock until the person grabbed him by the neck and pushed him to the ground. Jamal fell hard on his right shoulder and was about to wince in pain when the attacker on top of him clamped his mouth shut with unbelievable strength. "Shhh…" was all he heard. Then he recognized Samad's whisper, "Some people are coming. Ghosts." Before Jamal could react, he was quickly dragged into the bushes nearby; just in time for him to see three figures appear from the trees directly in front of them. About sixty metres.
Jamal's blood ran cold. He could clearly see three people walk over to the hole. They moved in silence. One of them deftly entered the hole while the others had their backs to the entrance of the hole, providing cover. Jamal could see nothing except black hooded figures moving in unison. The third's head popped out moments later. He whispered but the breeze carried his voice. "The place is warm. Means someone's been here tonight." A slight pause, as if he was thinking, then, "Just minutes old!" Jamal felt his heart render.
"Scout the area. Capture alive." The three of them spread and moved in a crouching position. One approached directly in Jamal's direction while the other two disappeared into the trees nearby. Fifteen metres away.
Samad whispered again, "I'll draw their attention. You move west, there's another hideout."
Ten metres.
"We have a gun!" Jamal panicked. "And surprise…we use the element of…"
"Listen, Jamal. I know we've not been together for long, but I believe in you." Samad gave Jamal his backpack and shook him by the shoulder. "You are a ghost. Remember that always."
Jamal didn't get a chance to reply because there was a blur. Samad dashed directly at the figure. Jamal rushed in the other direction. He looked over his shoulder to see Samad being crowded by two. Where was the third? He thought as he blindly ran through the forest, gripping the gun tightly in his right hand.

If Jamal was paying attention to his senses, he'll have heard the silent footsteps following closely behind.
He didn't. He kept running through the forest like a madman for several minutes until he passed a small clearing -about three metres in radius- and the moonlight above his head cast two shadows on the ground. That was when he heard those steps, like silent rustling of leaves.
Panicked, Jamal turned around, his weapon hand following.
"Always…" he heard the muffled voice of the figure say as a stinging kick almost removed his whole arm, sending the gun hurling into the darkness. And then, "keep your weapon in front of your body." Jamal fell on one knee, clutching his painful arm, before looking up. All he saw was a black figure. Average height and a slightly built body. His face was hooded and covered in pitch darkness. Just as suddenly, from the corner of his eye, Jamal saw another figure skirting around the clearing at blinding speed, almost a blur. About ten metres away. It covered the distance in seconds, arriving the scene with a flying kick towards Jamal's attacker who quickly parried the attack and took several steps backward. The new arrival stood where the attacker previously stood, his back to Jamal. He wore black knee-length coat. The upper part of his head was covered with a mask of some kind. Jamal couldn't see anything. He heard him speak, "this is our territory." Then he heard something, like the heavy release of air -the sound of a lorry braking crossed his mind- as the thing spoke. "We own it." His voice was like a muffled roar. Loud, rough.
"Then I will take what belongs to me and get going," Jamal heard the other voice reply, followed by the cocking of a gun.
"No man belongs to the other," Jamal's saviour boomed as his hand reached for something behind him but didn't pull it out.
There was a brief silence, then Jamal heard the silent footsteps again. They retreated. Shortly after, a gunshot was heard in the distance. Like thunder from far away.
"I couldn't help your friend," the figure's voice said, this time a little lower. "I was too late."
Jamal wasn't listening. His mind kept replaying the scenes that happened that night. He had felt it. And he had reached a conclusion: he was too weak. Too much of a burden. He felt his injured arm move. His fists tightened and his jaw clenched. His voice was barely audible, "he sacrificed himself to save me."
The figure pulled off his mask and turned around. He stared at Jamal for some seconds, as if at loss of what to say. "Then you have to be stronger. I'll teach you. I'll awaken you."
Jamal looked up at him. His face was still hidden but that didn't matter. He was going to get stronger. He had made up his mind.

"I f*cking lost him," Chris said to Zapper, who was waving a handheld device around the area. The thing beeped at random intervals.
"Well, your first hunt doesn't have to be the best," was the reply. The device still beeped but this time it was a bit louder. Zapper muttered almost to himself. "Weird."
"What's that?" came Eric's voice from the hole they found.
Chris walked up to Zapper, looking at the small display. The thing was the size of a POS machine. The only things on the display were two graphs, one red and the other green, with small numbers on their sides. "What the hell's this?"
"A Synchronizer. Collects live data around a three hundred metre radius and shows the information here. Green means plantation data and red means heat, as in animals," Zapper explained. He slowly waved the device left then right. "Signal seems jammed. Very strange since it has its own secured frequency."
"What could be wrong?" asked Chris.
"Someone somewhere must've known about the device. About us," Eric said grimly as he stepped out of the hole. "We'll need to locate them."
"Maybe those two we met?" Zapper said.
"I doubt it. Talking about them. Who are they?"
"The one I followed really lacked any fighting experience," Chris observed.
"The other gave us a hard time." Zapper grinned. "Until Eric pinned him at the nick of time. They were probably trespassers."
Chris nodded. Something seemed out of place. The only reason he retreated was because the guy he followed reminded him of Jamal. What were the odds of Jamal coming to Fuji? A coincidence, maybe? Eric's voice snapped him back. "We got to stay on alert. This place can play mind games when you let it."
*************
"Thanks," Jamal nodded as the collected a bowl of soup from his new friend. He took a sip, then a few gulps. Then he sighed. The warmth of the fire and soup calmed his nerves.
"What brought you here?" his companion asked, gulping his own soup.
"Training," Jamal replied. He suddenly felt a sharp pang in his stomach. It definitely wasn't hunger. The memories came rushing back.
"You have to remember the pain," the man said. "It makes your sword stronger and mind sharper."
Jamal studied him for the first time. He was elderly looking. Maybe forty. He still wore the overall but not the mask. Half of his face was scarred. While the other showed pronounced cheekbones and a sharp eye. Like an eagle's. Strangely enough, the hair on the scarred side wasn't affected. The whole white of it was left intact. Jamal wondered what could've done such.

"Gruesome, eh?" the man smiled lightly. "My previous life was just as brutal. Struggled to the top only to come tumbling down the hole a year later. Traitors." The man dropped his empty bowl. His next question rattled Jamal. "You are one of those ghosts, are you not?"
Silence.
Jamal thought for a while. Look where the whole ghost bullsh*t got him to. "I was an aspiring ghost, yes."
The man laughed. "My name is Fujikashi. We were trained to hunt down ghosts. They instill false hope into the hearts of people and force them into hopeless slavery."
Jamal shook his head, "you weren't in on the secret. If you knew…"
"Spare me the Torpedo game," Fujikashi retorted. "They use it to promote their political ambitions. Claiming to be heroes lying in the dark."
"What makes you say so?" Jamal asked. He was trying not to be rude.
"We haven't met two hours and I've told you my name, have I not?" the man said, standing up.
Jamal nodded. "True. But might not be your true name."
"Then why did I bring you to my hideout?" By this time the man shifted, allowing the light to illuminate the whole area. Jamal squinted his eyes, trying to see beyond the scenery in front of him.
Nothing.
"Look closer," he heard the man say.
The object the man was seating on wasn't a rock. It was a cylindrical metal protruding about one-and-a-half feet from the ground. The man reached to the top and pulled upwards. The cover made a loud hissing sound as it came up, letting off steam.
"More tunnels," Jamal muttered.
"Yes," replied the man as he packed his weapons. "Harder to find, easier to defend."
Jamal followed.

Kelvin's Mercedes screeched to a halt in front of the parking lot. He checked that his pistol was loaded and silenced before stepping out. He arrived at the door in no time, pounding his fists on it.
"Who the f*ck's that?!" He heard Freddy's voice bark from somewhere behind the door. Then came the shuffling of his footsteps and a grumbling voice. "It's eleven. For f*ck's sake."
The door opened slowly, followed by a hand holding a pistol. Kelvin kicked the door hard -sending Freddy's two hundred pound frame tumbling backwards- and stepping in. The look of surprise ostensible on Freddy's face as he tried unsuccessfully to aim his gun. "You don't make an entrance like that for f*ck sake!" he barked again. Kelvin just watched as he sluggishly dragged his weight back up. "Any other b*tch and I'd have sent their f*cking head to the world beyond."
Kelvin ignored the profanities. He didn't go there for that. The two metre by three room smelt of spoilt food. "Where's he?"
Freddy recomposed himself. "Somewhere safe." He smiled ruggedly. "The basement."
As they strode to the back of the building, Kelvin observed the rooms upstairs. "Nobody knows he's here?"
Freddy produced a key from his person and started unlocking the only door behind the building. "I rented the basement for a reason," he breathed. "This is my base." They proceeded down the stairs in silence.
He opened the door and warm air hit Kelvin on the face. It smelt stale. Freddy closed the door behind them and flipped the light switch. The fluorescent bulbs immediately flicked on, illuminating the four by four room. The room was empty except for a single wooden chair in the centre occupied by a hefty-looking man, his head bowed. His dark skin glistened under the lights. His white vest was stained in blood and sweat. Kelvin stepped closer, as if in curiosity. "He's unconscious."
Freddy grunted. Then strode up to the man and kicked his feet a few times. The man awoke with a start, his eyes squinting in the unexpected light. "There you go," said Freddy.
Lopo's eyes never left Kelvin's. They stared at each other for a long time, as if communicating something through eye contact. Lopo broke the silence. "Motherf*cker. Had your fun?"
Kelvin inhaled. "You have no idea."
Lopo chuckled but said nothing. Kelvin was now pacing slowly round Lopo's chair. "What do you know about a Torpedo?"
Lopo's head sank to his chest, his face smug. "I know no such sh*t."
Kelvin laughed dryly, "of course." He stopped dead in front of Lopo. "All the sources you've come in contact with over the years. Nothing?"
"Nothing whatsoever," Lopo shook his head to emphasize his point. "Was that why you brought me here?"
Kelvin started pacing round him again. He couldn't have been wrong. He was sure Lopo knew something. "Who's Kehinde Magaji?"
A pause. Lopo shuddered a little. "That's my dad," he whispered.
"Is that right?" Kelvin mocked. "I wonder HOW they are doing right now. Where did you hide them?" He said then stared at the ceiling, feigning remembrance. "Cairo? What was that street number again?" He turned to Freddy.
"Sixteen." Freddy shot.
By this time Lopo was drenched in sweat. His eyes bulged a little. He stared at the empty space near Kelvin's feet. "Stop it."
Kelvin laughed. "What's wrong, I know too much?" His laugh faded just as suddenly. "I got no time for games, Lop. Tell me what I need to know."

The two men wrestled to the ground, with Zapper on top. Chris moved quickly, locking Zapper's arms and legs with his own, trapping his opponent. Zapper shifted, rolling them over with Chris on top, forcing him to release his grip. Before Chris could react, Zapper's feet were planted on this thighs with hands grabbing his shoulders firmly. Chris immediately knew what was coming but couldn't stop it: he was flipped over, sent tumbling into the overgrowth ahead. "You too slow, boy," he heard Eric's voice announce.
"He's improving though," Zapper said as he offered Chris a hand. "A step at a time."
Chris took the hand without a word. His muscles hurt. The smell of roasted meat hit his nose as the two walked over to Eric. Zapper sat on a log of wood with Eric. Chris salivated as he saw the glistening mass over the fire. "A deer in this area?"
"Yup," Eric replied as he stroked the fire. "Couldn't believe my luck."
"Who were those people last night?" Chris asked. He saw that his two companions had been dodging questions about the events of the previous night. Something didn't feel right. He saw Zapper's eyes narrow.
"We can identify the two as ghosts," he said. Then he inhaled, "the third should be a bounty hunter."
"A bounty hunter?" Chris scoffed.
"Listen, not all people appreciate what we are," Eric interrupted. "Some people hire assassins. Extract information from ghosts and kill them."
There was a pause as Chris thought through the new info.
"But how can they fight on par with highly trained ghosts?" he asked.
"The Japanese are skilled," this time it was Zapper who talked. "They are the best in tracking and silent assassinations. Stealth is all they know."
"Did you manage to get any intel before dispatching the other one?" Eric asked.
"Nothing," Zapper replied, sounding disappointed. "He was skilled."
Chris nodded. The ghost that fought Zapper and Eric stood his ground for quite long. He almost got the better of them. But numbers can overpower quality.
"What happens to the other one?" Chris asked.
Zapper exhaled. "He's probably dead by now."

"We detected a loophole in our security sir," the employee addressed General David. "He was taken right under our noses."
"You mean YOUR nose," Faruk interrupted, sounding rather carefree.
"I can't believe this," were the first words the General uttered since the closed door meeting started about an hour ago. The news of a breach in security reached him earlier that morning. He still looked shaken.
"We'll get to the bottom of this, sir." The employee announced as he straightened his suit jacket. "We'll pull together an investigation team immediately."
David didn't seem convinced. "Whatever you do, ensure you do them in secrecy and keep us posted." He then waved a finger in the air. "Trust. Nobody."
The employee nodded.
"Thank you, Henry. You can leave us now," Faruk said. He waited until the door closed before he spoke. He chose his words carefully, "Have you informed Kelvin about this?"
David's eyes narrowed. "He's in the centre of this, dammit. If it wasn't for him we'll never had been able to catch that son of a b*tch."
Faruk leaned his back on the swivel chair he sat on. He was about to grab a stick of cigarette when he saw David's eyes shift to him. He sighed, folding his arms. "I know how much you hate disloyalty, David..."
"If there's even the slightest chance that my son was the culprit, I won't treat him any different than I would a criminal," David snapped. Then exhaled deeply. "He's a good soldier, Faruk. He chose serving his country over family. Remember? He deserves the benefit of a doubt."
"Okay," Faruk said, raising his arms in the air. "But let's not get too carried away here, shall we?" Faruk said, offering a pack of cigarette to his friend.
David nodded. He picked a cigarette and pulled out a lighter from his person.
**
If only they saw a small laser beam leading from the window behind David to the rooftop of a building directly opposite them about two hundred metres away. Kelvin removed the earphones and deactivated the listening device. It was a hi-tech military device used for espionage. When activated. The laser is pointed at a target window or glass surface. It then carries the noises that bounce off the glass surface and sends it to a small handheld device, which decodes the sounds and transmits them to the listener. After packing his things, Kelvin pulled out his phone and speed dialed Freddy.

Jamal and his new companion trudged against the waves of water pushing against their knees. They had been together for a month and Jamal's training was going smoother than expected; Fujikashi had been an excellent teacher. But he was a man with many secrets. Jamal held his torch higher as the water level started rising and the breeze blew the flames wilder. Their shadows danced on the overgrowth nearby.
"This river," Fujikashi breathed. "Leads to the caves I was trained in."
"Why are we leaving the tunnels?" Jamal asked in a whisper, knowing that the wind could easily carry their noises further than normally possible, alerting anybody nearby. "Thought you said it was safer?"
"Yes. Safer for me. But not for you," Fujikashi replied.
"How is that possible?"
There was a momentary silence.
"Those people who attacked you a month ago, they are still here," Fujikashi said. He also raised his torch hand higher, casting a shadow on the bad half of his face.
Jamal felt skeptical but decided to leave it at that. He adjusted his backpack and pushed against the waves.
A full hour later they arrived at the base of a mountain. It stood about twenty five feet high. The darkness didn't allow for much visibility for Jamal to confirm whether they were there or not.
"Stay here, will you?" Fujikashi whispered, handing his backpack over to Jamal and disappearing somewhere behind the mountain.
Five minutes easily turned to fifteen minutes.
A doze of sleep started catching up to Jamal -he hadn't slept for three consecutive days- but he shook it off. Man's worst enemy is his own self. Movement and then Fujikashi reappeared. He was accompanied by two hefty-looking men. Jamal couldn't see their faces but he knew they must be fierce-looking, too. Fujikashi exhaled. "Jamal, these are your new brothers."
Just silence and stares exchanged. That was all the greeting Jamal got.
They all walked towards the path they came from and in less than a minute they entered a large spacious area. The ground ahead sloped downwards Jamal raised his torch higher to increase the range of illumination. At the base of the slope, a flat path led inside a huge opening under the mountain.
"You said it was a cave," Jamal rued.
"It IS a cave."
"Isn't a cave supposed to be a hole in a mountain?"
"Isn't this a hole in a mountain?"
"Ikuze," a rude sandy voice announced -let's go.
Jamal looked at Fujikashi who looked ahead.
The inside of the cave was larger than Jamal thought. They took a few paces into the place before they were asked to stop by what Jamal assumed to be entrance guards. The cave was about fifteen metres in diameter and maybe six in height. Small torches were lit all over the place, allowing Jamal to see the numerous rectangular holes carved on the walls to be used as beds. Those in very high areas connected a rope to be used for descent. Given the harsh weather conditions, warmth was needed. Rocks and stones were very good conductors and preservers of heat. But Jamal had gotten used to the cold, in fact he embraced it.
"Oro sensei wa--" one of the men started to say when an old man appeared from a small hole ahead of them. He looked feeble, almost unbelievable that he was alive. His white beard reached his chest. He used a six-foot stick for support as he slowly walked towards them. Jamal saw everyone falling to their knees and he followed suit.
As the old man came closer, Jamal saw more of his features: he was slightly bent at the waist, his eyes were deep and searching, almost hollow. His long thin fingers gripped the stick like it was his life support. The old man stopped dead in front of them. "Fujikashi," he said, his voice almost inaudible. "What brings you here?"
"Sensei," Fujikashi bowed lower, "I brought to you--"
"A young man, lost in his cause," the old man said. He smiled. "Go back to your post."
Jamal saw Fujikashi stand and leave. What post? He didn't have time to contemplate the matter further.
"You," the old man called. "Let's walk. You mind?" The old man stretched out a hand in Jamal's direction.
Jamal shook his head and took the old man's hand. He was shocked to feel a strong iron grip.
