Two different schools of thought one will only repair and will never replace unless if imported by self, the other is open to both options but more inclined to replacements locally. very healthy debates, this is what we expect on Cartalk. As a patriotic Nigerian I would Buy Nigeria to grow nigeria. |
| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by thebigkendo(m): 11:01am On Aug 25, 2018 |
falzthebadguy:Exactly!!! As for the patriotic bits..Bros I don't really understand Both parties are in Nigeria, employ Nigerians, pay tax in Nigeria(I hope) . Team replacement "local replacement engines" are imported by 3rd parties from ogbodo Oyibo with duty paid(I hope) . Team rebuild wants to import by self from ogbodo oyibo & still will pay duty(I hope). |
| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by falzthebadguy: 11:19am On Aug 25, 2018 |
thebigkendo:Not entirely sir. There is a chain of people who will benefit from buying products locally. 1. The importer 2. the Trucker 3. The Warehouse 4. The retailers landlord 4.The retailer 5. the truck boys (twice) 6.The market unions 7. the local Govt 8. The petty traders in the market 9. PHCN And on and on, it's a ripple effect and helps the Nigerian economy. 8. |

Kashif:The only reason I responded is because of the TITLE of this Thread. A replacement is holistic A Rebuild is holistic. While a repair is partial. Comparing a replacement to a repair is sacrilegious |
| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by thebigkendo(m): 11:39am On Aug 25, 2018 |
falzthebadguy: now this is funnyWanted to argue out some points..but I gave up. MODIFIED Am very sure team rebuild will never import a corolla engine because Ladipo = 180k, import by self probably = 350k minus Labour engine oil, coolant and other consumables. A land rover puma engine maybe Roll Royce engine.. Maybe But not Toyota or Honda engine weh full everywhere at far cheaper price |

| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by thebigkendo(m): 12:06pm On Aug 25, 2018 |
GAZZUZZ:You never can tell.. Maybe just maybe replacement engine was repaired sometime ago in the ogbodo oyibo by some independed shop or techie.. So does not appear in VIN report, especially all does Asean spec engines.. Remember no be everybody for ogbodo dey go dealership for repairs, some dey go ![]() Some guys like EgunMogaji dey even do the repairs/replacement for dia ![]() |

while we were at it, I decided to stroll to the market to buy an engine for a vehicle in the shop. case study is a toyota camry 2003 with a 1az-fe engine stamped to look like a 2az-fe engine in the bay. The vehicle mileage is 46,000miles It rattles, smokes and shorts oil. usually I would have gone asian, but on a tight budget as the client has a string of jobs to do. So I went American but side by side with computerglobal as my guide. On first attempt, I settled for this engine. www.nairaland.com/attachments/7631939_img201808251211491_jpeg2a92063b783053960d8c8f3e1527529a www.nairaland.com/attachments/7631939_img201808251211491_jpeg2a92063b783053960d8c8f3e1527529a Engine came out of this car, car is not flooded , but involved in front impact. I wonder why the Mexicans did not fix and sell as a whole car? I guess because it's due to the fact that it has to be trucked from texas to a costal state which would push the price of the car beyond the roof. www.nairaland.com/attachments/7631982_screenshot20180825135029_jpeg991d02c096f7e985b74a273708fb7f9c The mileage will not exceed 40,000miles based on this report. www.nairaland.com/attachments/7631956_screenshot20180825134503_jpegd53d34f5ef73af43f6261ac85e079d83 www.nairaland.com/attachments/7631964_screenshot20180825134545_jpeg60e7e2373835c7794b2003cbc1540290 www.nairaland.com/attachments/7631965_screenshot20180825134556_jpeg1e5be14ff2ac6b7b2feddec59455f280 And she's american. She's sitting comfortably in the boot of my cerato ![]() www.nairaland.com/attachments/7631940_img201808251338538_jpeg3f1f5e39a55653e9e6554fc9497cf945 If you search diligently you will find a steady supply of low mileage engines in ladipo market in mushin lagos. |

One question. Radautoworks. Will the rebuilt/ repaired corolla engine be able to run on synthetic oil without oil burn issues? Gazzuzz. Will the replacement corolla engine run on synthetic oil without oil burn issues? |
| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by mayor2013: 2:46pm On Aug 25, 2018 |
GAZZUZZ:Bring that engine down here. Address in my signature how many miles on it in total? |
| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by GAZZUZZ(op): 2:56pm On Aug 25, 2018 |
timifakay:Looking at this report, oil change was done at about 3-4000mile intervals, I'm certain Onyibo put Good synthetic oyel inside, I will follow the trend with mobil1 5w30 full synth www.nairaland.com/attachments/7631964_screenshot20180825134545_jpeg60e7e2373835c7794b2003cbc1540290 |

timifakay:Corolla does not require synthetic.. If you decide to use synthetic on yours.. No wahala, good for you.. Right Weight Mineral oil with 3k miles OCI, engine will be just fine So I don't think it a fair yard stick for the comparisons.. Personally if my car burns a quart of synthetic oil between oil change I won't be bothered Modified

What would you rather do? Replace or rebuild? |
| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 3:28pm On Aug 25, 2018 |
falzthebadguy:Here's the thing though. It's not really buying locally. It's still imported parts. |
| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 3:29pm On Aug 25, 2018*. Modified: 3:57pm On Aug 25, 2018 |
thebigkendo:Yup. We wouldn't in singles. We have the option to bring them in by container from approved sources but just like the batteries and tires, it's too soon to know the right mix. As we continue to do business and expand, we WILL bring in engines we can trust that will be competitive and then it will be game over. They've got about two, three years before this happens though. |
| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 3:32pm On Aug 25, 2018 |
GAZZUZZ:You do know that Carfax will only show repairs done by major dealerships or insurance companies who report it right? Most repairs will not show up on Carfax e.g. engine replacements done at independent shops. |

| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by GAZZUZZ(op): 3:40pm On Aug 25, 2018 |
radautoworks:a tokumbor 09 camry will enter naija at Between 100,000-160,000miles and we will clap for the car dealer. This is a maximum of 40,000 miles and oil was changed regularly based on the innards of the engine. |
| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 3:44pm On Aug 25, 2018 |
GAZZUZZ:Which you really get to inspect after you buy it and take it apart. I think you keep forgetting that we are a franchise and part of that means only using approved channels for parts. I told you in the past that if a customer wanted to us to use their parts, it's not a problem but they would have no warranty. I'm not sure why having such stringent quality control is an issue for you. With us opening 10 stores across the country that will back each other's warranty, you really think Milex is going to let each store run amok getting parts wherever they so please? When you find an engine supplier that can consistently prove preference of his engines and pass Milex's supplier requirements and quality control while providing warranties, we'll be more than happy to consider that supplier being added to the approved list. I've said it many times, use what you want, will use what we want. Over time, we'll see what happens ![]() |
| Re: To Rebuild Or To Replace? by radautoworks: 3:51pm On Aug 25, 2018 |
falzthebadguy:Not a personal choice but a company choice. Remember, we are a franchise. It is all about quality control and consistency. |
