chasm chaos chord chorus character ache echo school (where is the 'K' in these words?).

"Chasm" has no "k" in its pronunciation.

English still retains germanic, french and latin words. English itself was an old rural language. German, French and Latin gave it life and these words still retain their original spellings from those languages.
