if u go down to verse 14-18 of that chapter u wil understand that God said let there be lights (not light but lights) in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth and it was so one to rule over the day (sun) and the other the night (moon) and the stars read verse 17 well it says God set them (sun, moon, stars) in the firmament of the heaven (sum bible wil say sky) to give light upon the earth
that means when God created the light it did not shine on the earth so b4 God created the animals in the water and those on the land He had to make the light shine on earth for d animals to use
so in other words but the sun and the moon nd the stars get their lights frm The Light God created. Hope that helped

The moon, sun & other stars were not created in any of those seven epoch of days in Gen 1. The bible never mentioned when they were created.

What do you think constituted the material heaven & earth mentioned at Gen 1:1? The material earth, with all its elements, & the heaven - with all its stellar bodies had been in existence for untold number of years prior to preparation of the earth for life. Genesis does not discuss their birth or creation, but sequence of emergence of things as the earth was been prepared for life.

Though light STARTED EMERGING on day 3, its source(s) was eclipsed by swaddle band (thick cloud, SEE JOB 38:9). Plants needed light, not sighting of the sun literally for survival.

It was on day 4 that the source(s) of light mentioned in Gen 1:3 became discernible to an earthly observer, had one been there.

Summarily, Gen 1:3 was a call/command for appearance of light from the long existing light sources; while Gen 1:14 was announcement of appearances of the light sources. Day 4 marked the birth of solar days, as the sun could then be visible to man, had he been there. Hence , their functions as signs for seasons & solar time/day/year, were also announced.

The previous days were epochs stating intervals b/w events, not solar days.

The Light in Gen. 1:3 is Christ if you will accept it. See Jn. 1:7-9 you'll notice each time the Light is mentioned, it's in caps.
