GAMBIA: Nigeria to bear 50% of ECOWAS military intervention Though Senegal is to lead a planned military intervention in Gambia if its president, Yahya Jammeh, fails to step down when his mandate expires on January 19, 2017, Nigeria is billed to bear about 50 per cent of the cost of the operation, according to ECOWAS. A take off cost of the exercise is being put at about $300 million, with the other 12 countries of the sub-region which will contribute an estimated $160 million. The decision to follow military option in forcing Jammeh to keep to his earlier acceptance of the December 1, election, which saw Adama Barrow winning him in the polls, was reached after the last of a peace resolution committee, led by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari reported that no progress was made after several meetings with the Gambian president. An ECOWAS delegation, which had on Thursday in Abuja, the Nigerian seat of power briefed President Buhari was said to have pleaded that Nigeria should bear 60 percent of the cost of the intervention, aimed at ensuring that Barrow is sworn in as the next Gambian president on January 19. A Presidency source, who confirmed the visit, said the appeal centred mainly on how to fund the sub-regional force. He declined to confirm the total cost of the option, but said that as the leader of the countries in West Africa economic group, “Nigeria is usually expected to bear the brunt of the bloc’s programmes or exercise as it has always been known to have done in the past but for the recession, which has reduced its commitment to many obligations. “ However, Chairman of ECOWAS Commission told a foreign news agency in London that the strike force was already in place with its personnel to be drawn from Senegal, Nigeria, Liberia, and Ghana, while other member-countries are to contribute in some other logistic supports. He was quoted as saying that Nigeria would be expected to contribute substantively to the force, adding that details of the plan were still sketchy. He said , given the experience of the past various peace keeping operations in parts of Africa, ECOWAS may be budgeting about $300 million as a takeoff cost of the operation, which experts say will likely eat deep into the economies of most member-countries currently facing some meltdown. But experts say ECOWAS may not succeed in its plan if it relies on Nigeria, which is passing through funds crunch to run its 2016 budget. 1. A South African Navy Valour-class frigate with 32 Vertical Launch cells containing Umkhonto IR 2. A China-built C28A corvette intended for Algeria conducts a test launch of an anti-ship missile. Same weapons package Nigeria turned down. Algeria has ordered three such ships, and one has already ... 3.Equatorial guinea New Navy Flagship. There is not a single vessel in the Nigerian Navy with sea or surface strike capability, anti-aircraft systems or torpedoes. Nigeria that has failed to significantly modernize its armed forces. Money meant for the procurement of arms for the defence of the territorial integrity at a most critical point of national vulnerability are either siphoned off or used to buy platforms with little strategic relevance. What country on earth spendsv $600 million on TEN crop dusters, that's nearly twice Cameroons defense budget. One will expect it should be obvious to Nigerians that what we are dealing with is a primitive and pre-modern mode of governance that has no equivalent anywhere in the world in its sheer lack of modern rationality with its ethical mooring...and to think there are people here defending and making excuses for Nigeria's obscene approach to security.....smh 5 Likes 1 Share

SLBM: Uganda have have 6 su30 but lack almost every basic thing. This is the reason they use foreigners to fly the remaining 3 that are airworthy. Even Zambia you were showing us their ADS and UAV is now officially a Chinese territory. The Chinese have also taken over the police force and are currently being recruited into Zambian police force. Building an Airforce is more than just having aircrafts. Welfare, training and conducive environmentironment are very important issues that most be taken care of first. Go to Nigerian army barracks and compare them with NAF barracks and you will be forced to ask if they are both Nigerian forces. 1 Like

Odunayaw: You're making a fundamental mistake that prevents you from seeing the wider picture-like a man without basic math trying to design a bridge, ishyt just won't add up! You guys, can't or won't see the bottom line is poverty! Collections and revenues are therefore low. After nearly a decade why won't the FG splash out the required 3 bn$ or so to buy the needed platforms and increase soldier welfare to properly prosecute the war? The KDF only has 30 k servicemen, you guys have at least 100k and our budgets are basically both a billion or so dollars. Divided into acquisitions, training, welfare, base budgets, pay etc etc there really isn't much for operations. |

SLBM: Are we not changing our airframes? From Alpha jets to Tucanos isnt that change? Only that the airforce is giving priority to counter insurgency being the threat at hand, what is wrong with that? You want us to be posited for future threats, nice thoughts but today is fvcked already with Boko haram, only when we survive today should we gear up for tomorrow. Again while you argue that chad may invade us tomorrow, I can as well argue that Haqqani network or Taliban can invade us tomorrow afterall we didn't send any invite to Al qaeda & ISis already on our soil, so gearing up for counter insurgency deals with today and future threats, while your proposal deals with future threats only ie if you understand that the platforms you recommend for the future are too expensive for counter insurgency. I understand your Jingoism but life doesn't work the way we think, it works the way it should. I don't know about NAF's priorities in the past but right now, I can't fault what they are doing logically, you are free to try. |
