By logic no homogeneous place can claim mastery of pidgin English. Benin city is 99% Bini people with one language. So why would they suffer themselves to speak a foreign language amongst themselves? The influx of foreign students into Uniben, Ekpoma, Auchi Poly brought pidgin there plus as the former capital of Bendel state comprising today's Delta State.



Why Warri thrive in pidgin is because of the different tribes which needed to find a common language to interact with Europeans in the 16/17th century.

Benin City is a mix of different Edo ethnic groups like the Bini, Esan, Estako and Owan. Bini is the major ethnic group, but there are also Esan, Esatko and other Edo speaking people. All the Edo people speak a different dialect so they communicate in pidgin, because Edo's don't all speak the same dialect. These are all similarly related ethnic groups but speaking different dialect. And the different dialects are very different from each other, so you have to communicate in pidgin.
