Hi. I am going for a masters in health services administration at Tulane University SPHTM. This place is truly a gold mine and I learnt so much here. I got approved on 27th of sept in abj. Just picked up my passport today. I felt I should give back to the community. There is a lot of background story to this interview but for the sake of brevity i will just go straight to my interview. This was my 2nd attempt.

Me, when i first made up my mind that i wanted a masters, i went to google and searched for top 20 schools of public health in USA, then i bagan checking each school on their official website. Tulane ranked 12th on the US news and world reports and also My supervisor mentioned the school as one at the forefront on research on tropical diseases which is important to Nigeria...V.O, i will stop you right there.

V.O, why now when you do not have enough medical experience

Me, Not at all, I have been a medical doctor for over 3 yrs now (told her all i have done since graduation till now, all the things on my DS160). V.O, I will stop you right there, so why now?

Me, Based on this experience, i have witnessed a lot of heart shattering things such as people not being able to afford drugs, doctors and healthworkers going on strike, people dying of preventable diseases. Most burdersome is how crippled the country is when we have epidemics. We have manpower and appreciable material resources, what we lack is good administration, planning and execution on how to generate an output that covers the health issues of all Nigerians. This is why i am going to the US to gain such transferable skills. I also have plans of owning my own hospital in Nigeria in the next 6yrs and I need this training to be able to run it efficiently and effectively with aims of giving affordable and accessible health care to my people...VO...i will stop you right there.

Few tips that i can give based on my experience.

1st believe in yourself, sounds cliche right but its tested and trusted. My 1st interview, i met the infamous african american woman and honestly it was not pleasant atall. So if you know within you that you did the whole process yourself, had all your documents intact like i did and the only issue was the interview, do try again.

I am single, in my twenties and have not travelled before. So do not let that bother you so much.

Avoid agents pls. Avoid agents pls. They can be soo wicked. Do everything yourself. Come here for information

Pls be confident, its necessary...there was this guy shouting ontop of his voice thinking it was projecting confidence but we listening could hear the anxiety in every syllable what more the V.O. He was denied. Pls practice well before hand.

I have always been confident about my abilities. GPA 3.6/4 (Wes evaluated). GRE total 310. Applied kindda late to 8 schools was admitted into 7. Two gave me partial scholarships. So i was pretty confident. After the 1st denial, i was truly humbled but i am a resilient fellow. I hardly give up. I found God again...lol, sounds funny but its true. I prayed harder than I did before the 1st interview. I had to trust God this time and it worked.

Listen to motivationals, they helped me alot. I went on youtube, saw a lot. I discovered TD Jakes. What a gifted speaker. It will help you get over the few days depression and push you on.

I had to also contact ppl here to help me. Some answered, some didnt and i understand. People are busy with school, work and all but for a shy guy like me who likes to keep my business my business, i dreaded putting up my enquiries so i contacted the ones i noticed gave enlightening responses with a touch of humanity and who were willing to help others. Few answered, most didnt. So go with the ones that replied you.

Pls during the interview, learn to talk,express yourself. Do not be rigid. A lady i observed who was laughing with the consular officer and smiling through out got hers. I had to learn to smile like those beauty pagent models. My first interview was corrupted with the mantra of dont talk if not spoken to, do not answer what you were not asked...so i was a one word answering machine..yes, no...i did not even expatiate on questions and there was this long period when she was just typing on end, i was expecting more questions but none came afterwords because i read here how brief one had to be, anyways the point is pls by all means express yourself fully. When you notice them typing for long, present your case again, talk about the school, ask for opinion on the city you intend to go to school, say your future plans for Nigeria. Dont just keep mute. Let the V.O be the one to say 'stop'

Please house ECE or IERF; which is faster and can evaluate my transcript in a month. I am willing to pay for 5 days rush service. I don't want verification process to delay the evaluation; so I will prefer an agency that doesn't send back to Nigeria schools for verification.

Your age still qualify for an undergraduate program. If you want to try, try. Just know what you are doing.

Travel history got your back. American embassy like people like you a lot. You have built that trust they wanted in applicant. If you could travel to the US and return to Nigeria, they believe you ain't running. It is people who travel and never return that dents the chances of those who actually want to go to advance and come to Nigeria to contribute. To all F1 visa hopefuls, here is my transcript and a little bit of background info/landing details.

I had my visa interview on Aug 2nd 2018

I was on the queue and I noticed a particular v.o was denying everybody within a minute, I became apprehensive, my confidence started waning, mouth getting dried, from my calculations it appears the window that will open up for my interview will be with this woman! God No!! I screamed in my mind, I turned to the orderly and asked to be shown the restroom (evil grin), the man look me shake head then said I should hold on for my interview first, then go to ease myself. Ha! abi were leleyi ni? (for my mind o). As we were arguing na him alarm sound for a inner cubicle, NEXT!!
Sharp! sharp!! I darted to the cubicle, as I came face to face with the African american middle aged v.o, she was all smiles, my bp started reducing small small.

V.O: hi goodmorning (very bright smile)
Me: good morning

v.o: how was your night? (I begin think, really??)
me: my night was fine, thank you

v.o: passport and I20
me: handed it over

v.o: you are Mr so so so
me: Dr so so so actually

v.o: oh sorry
me: its OK (smiling)

v.o: oh, u already have a b1 visa
me: no, that is actually a renewal (from here confidence start soaring)

v.o: just a min pls ( am sure she went to check my travel history)
me: no problem

v.o: how will you fund your program?
me: personal savings and family support.

v.o: may I see your bank statements
Me: handed it over

v.o: oh you have more than one sponsors
me: yes

v.o: I will need to verify this, if it checks out, you will have your visa (photocopied my 120)
me: no problem.

N.B
All this happened within two minutes in the most cordial mood possible, no question about my school or course, I am a Dr. going for Mph at Texas A&M.

I personally believe my past travel history both to the USA and Europe spoke well for me. I have never stayed up to two weeks outside Nigeria before. And my intended course aligned well with my background.

One week after, my visa was approved. I collected my pp and booked ticket immediately, school was resuming in 3 days.
left naija two days later, landed Texas just a day to resumption.

It has been very busy here since.

Texas A&M is a very big school, though not as much Africans as I anticipated. And my department is super nice, fed the whole class for two weeks (just lunch o)

I will recommend this school to anyone. But I believe we should all have some money for our support on landing, I have no funding at all and things are expensive when u convert, but I made modest plans for my initial survival.

I prepared my application for a whole year, and I kept very good travel history but people without travel history do get visas, and married people also got visas. Just be rational with your plans and expectations all the best my people.

Stick with you school. Okay? When you get in, you can change to another school you want. I am surprised your school did not want to write extension letter. That is weird.

I just picked up my passport with F-1 visa in it in Lagos. Unfortunately, I will not be able to join the class anymore and my program coordinator and Associate Dean advised me to defer to next semester, Spring 2019. Classes started August 20th.

Now, I'm even thinking of getting admission into another school cos I'm not satisfied with the standard of the school I got the visa with.

If I get admission, can I use the visa to enter US and then transfer to the school?

One of the school needs evaluation while the other two don't. I tried asking if they would accept unevaluated but they insisted it must be evaluated. Even though it isn't my first choice course, it is the most affordable. Almost half the others.

Aside WES which requires verification of documents from school, ECE is more recognized and doesn't do verification like WES. So go with ECE, they are fast.

A particular embassy is probably not US EMBASSY, because they don't do that. Statement of account isn't the only item that can delay issuance of a visa. But your point is helpful!

You can contact your account officer to check if your is the one delaying the process. I work as a contact center consultant with a bank in Nigeria, a particular embassy sent a SOA for us to verify, but due to backlogs no one responded to the email. The embassy decided to call, I happened to pick the call and I ensured I contacted the customers home branch and responded to the embassy within 4hours verifying the authenticity. Liaise with your bank to see if that is pending with them.

Before October 1 or after? If your school has resumed, the solution is to defer and get i-20 for Spring 2019. You can then make sure you schedule for interview early. Goodluck!

No! Nigerians and Ghana are not allowed to use credit card for Sevis payment. If you have anyone in the US, tell them to take the cash to any western union office near them. Fill your and generate a coupon from the SEVIS website and send the person paying the fee a copy.
It can only be paid by cash, credit card was never allowed.

I understand though, they are looking for means to curb the crowd and only have legitimate individual applied for their visas. But Nigerians always beat Oyibo system sha. They certainly want the crowd of applicant go down. But at least they are issuing to those they found worthy.

WES usually takes plenty of time, but are magnanimous in their evaluations. ECE is faster but churns out frugal grade points. It's up to you to decide.

You can generate the coupon yourself, but I'm not sure you can complete the payment in Nigeria.

It is incumbent on the "freshers" joining the forum and following up here to add a short profile of themselves when asking questions related to admission process in the US. You want guru to help answer your questions? Great! They are many here, if they ain't so busy chasing their own dreams too. But some of you ask questions in a way that can't be answered directly. So, questions like this have been ignored.
Hence, with a short profile, we might have a clue of who is asking the question and then use that to tailor your answer.
A short profile should contain:

Age
Academic level
Program and degree you intend to study in the US
Term you wish to apply

This is only necessary if asking admission-related question and about prospect of successful student visa interview.

Not all bank can do it. I use Zenith and the staff there were just like, What is Sevis fee--if you tell them. If you need someone to help with the payment, contact me. I can get it done for you between today and Friday.

walspring , contact him and he might be able to help . You cannot pay it in nigeria , the closest western union to pay outside nigeria is in Ecobank Benin Republic (cotonu) . alternatively ask here on nairaland or find someone in the US who can help you pay
