Hello people, is it a very difficult task for me to change from masters degree to phd while in US. That is if I have both admissions while am in Nigeria this year but the masters degree resumes January 2019 while the phd resumes next fall, and then I decide to start with the masters degree but will change to the phd if I eventually make up my mind that it is a better path for me. How difficult is it for me to switch from the masters to the phd while in the US ?

Since they are 2 programmes from different schools, it's very possible to change from the masters programme in school A to the PhD program in school B after the first semester. You'll just inform the masters programme that you won't be continuing the programme. According to the department of homeland security, you can have multiple form I-20s (https://www.voanews.com/a/can-i-receive-multiple-i-20s/4008980.html) but you have to eventually choose one.

One question I have though, is why do you want to spend money on a semester (masters) that you may let go of? Some PhD programmes can allow you end your programme after 2 years and will award you a masters degree. You can systematically inquire and see if that's a possibility in the PhD programme that you're interested in. However, if you've not yet obtained the PhD admission, be careful how you inquire as it may suggest that you're not interested in the PhD programme.

There are several options available to you after graduation from your masters programme if you want to stay back. First, you can apply for your optional practical training (OPT) when you're about graduating. It gives you up to 12 months to work in a job related to your course of study. Depending on your field of study, some companies in some fields like IT and engineering can file an H1b (work permit) or a green card for you. In the advent that you don't get sponsored for an H1b or green card, you can apply for an extension to your OPT if you're in a STEM related field. Another option is to apply for a PhD programme (most are funded). That will be an additional 4 years. Many companies that employ international PhD graduates will sponsor you for a H1b or green card. Alternatively, with your PhD degree (and to a lesser extent with a masters degree, unless you have good research publications), you can apply for a green card through the national interest waiver programme. Here you have to prove that you have skills that are needed in the US. The national interest waiver programme route is expensive (about $7,000 -$10,000) because most people use a lawyer to avoid any complication. The last option is if you meet a guy in the US (who's a US citizen or permanent resident) who loves you and walks down the aisle with you (assuming that you're still single and free). Then you can apply for a green card through the marriage route.

Thanks for the reply.
Not that I want to waste funds as such, it's just that I have been processing admissions for over a year. Now that the masters admission looks certain for spring 2019, the phd admission is now also a possibility and I should prefer that but its fall 2019 and I can no longer wait that long. I doubt if I can cope with the boredom. But am told if I embrace the masters it would be difficult to change to the phd if eventually I want to when fall comes. That's where I am confused. I love phd but to wait another year ill rather start a masters program and then change if I feel like when the time comes

I totally understand the boredom in having to wait out the PhD programme. If you have the money, it's very possible to switch from the masters programme to the PhD programme, and it's very straightforward.

Visa Delayed July 17 2018 at Lagos embassy

Re fired... Got an appointment for August 16, Rescheduling thing happened, interview date was moved to 27th of August and the following went down.
I am doing this because I learnt a lot from this forum... from part 11 down to 13 and a bit of 14.

Abuja embassy window 3...

Me: Good morning Ma'am with a big smile

Vo: Good morning, pass me your passport and your I-20, she then asked what school are you going to?

Me: Im going to bowie state university for my masters in computer science, while saying that she was also nodding.

VO: How did you get to know about this school?

Me: It was recommended by my line manager at my former place of work, I also read a couple of online journals as regards my area
of specialization and the school kept being mentioned.

VO: So you work at XYZ Consulting firm?

Me: Pronounced it properly for her, then moved on to explain what my job is at the firm. I am an application support specialist plus a consultant

VO: Have you served?

Me: Yes, I served in 2015

VO: What are you going to be doing after this program?

Me: I will be returning to nigeria to continue working at my current place of work, but as a senior IT security specialist, she now asked for
a proof of my return, which i presented

VO: Who will be sponsoring?

Me: My uncle, went ahead to explain that he is business man, my maternal uncle and how he's being sponsoring since High school plus i will be
supporting with some savings from work, she then asked for his bank statement went through it and said she will be holding on to the bank statement and if found fraudulent i will be banned for 10 years and my response was: I can assure there's no issue.

VO: She then asked about my parents, I confidently told her they are doing great and that my mom is also involved with sponsoring this course
Then she goes with those words.... I will be approving your visa...you know the rest

Please note that the above does not fully cover all that transpired at the interview but will sure inform one of what to expect and how to go about it.

I will also like to mention that GOD is really important in all this, you need to be confident its okay to stammer but make sure you make your point. Also, you need to use technical terms in your field of study while explaining yourself. I dont know it all but GOD did it... It was only his grace. It is also important to dress simple and neatly... More like a clean shirt and some nice pants.

Finally, thank you to everyone that have taken their time to post one thing or the other as regards School and Visa, GOD bless you all.

what did you present as proof

Pls guys, I got just one admission from American at d moment but I heard that, it's better to go to the (visa interview) with at least 2 or more admissions.
my question is that;
if VO asked me, how many schools did u apply to? & and how many admit?
ME: I apply to 3 schools & got 3 admits.
HOPE THEY (((WILL NOT VERIFIED))) THAT, IT'S JUST ONE SCHOOL I APPLIED TO & ONE ADMISSION I GOT ??

House please I need help. I don Google tire. Have contacted so many schools to no avail.I have HND in business administration(upper credit) and wish to apply for pre-masters program, as few schools I've sent transcript to feel my GPA is not equivalent to USA decree.
Please I need names of schools that offer pre-masters program. Though I still dey Google but any help or information will highly be appreciated. Thanks.
People have been suggesting I go through an agent since I've tried my best, but I don't want any problem in future that's why I'm seeking for help here.

Most schools take HND as an equivalent of BSc.

BarristerAlarig:

No school in the US will admit you into an M.sc with an HND except you evaluate your transcript with WES. If you evaluate your transcript, it will be evaluated as the equivalent of a US bachelor's degree. You can then apply for M.sc admission.

Not totally correct though.

You're towing a dangerous part. As I would always advice, do not make claims you are unable to substantiate. It is not difficult to discover the truth from you. If you applied to 1 school, admit it and give a very good reason why you did so. Visa Officers are your friends and are willing to comply with sincere applicants deserving of approval.

LONG POST ALERT!!!
Today is Sunday so I want to share my testimony grin cheesy
I've been following this thread since December 2017 after Canada bounced me and this thread played a great role in my choice of school and visa prep & all of that. IMO, I think getting a visa is now harder than before especially when you don't have a plan or you don't know why you want to further your study. I saw many blues that day and people who dressed inappropriately for the interview(I was just smh).
July 19, I was interviewed by a tall slim lady @window4 and I was just praying not to be directed to the black woman tho she fine with nice pomo lips grin, Lol.
As an Accountant wey I be, I wore my suit, white shirt and a wine tie+pock square. I'm not sure I've any better advise to give other than the ones the elders here have always reiterated. But it's best you speak with all sincerity & be confident, plan(i mean you should know what you want), prepare well and pray well too. With God, all things are possible.

Vo: Good morning, can you pass your passport
Vo: Why are you going to the US
Me: I am going to Montclair State University, NJ for my Masters in Accounting with a concentration in Forensic Accounting (she tried to cut me but i had to rush my words just to mention my concentration)
Vo: Did you apply to any other school?
Me: Yes College at Brockport, SUNY
Vo: Which of the campuses?
Me: Rochester (I never knew if they had other campus stations but i was lucky to remember the day i dialled the Grad coord's nos it showed Rochester on truecaller)
Vo: So why did you pick MSU over Brockport?
Me: Aside that MSU offers a concentration in Forensic accounting and accredited by AACSB, MSU is the best public university and the most innovative business school in NJ. Aside that, the curriculum is well designed such that it doesn't focus alone on the theoretical aspect but it integrates a lot of practical case studies which would be beneficial for me going forward in my career. I will also get hands on experience with software training that helps to get a full picture of someone's financial habits and activities, track spending patterns and combine information from multiple financial accounts and I will get moot court room experience as well. The curriculum also ensures that when I eventually take my CFE exams, I'd not need to take extra classes.
Vo: You've been working at XYZ for how long?
Me: 5-6months now, started late Feb
Vo: And before then you worked at shengbele company, what do they do there?
Me: Its an Audit firm
Vo: Have you ever applied to another country(I guess she'd see through their database)?
Me: Yes that was last year, Canada
Vo: What program was that?
Me: A PGD in HRM
Vo: So why are you switching to accounting?
Me: I have been an accountant for a while and my undergraduate degree was in accounting so I have decided to remain in that career path
Vo: Was there no Msc Accounting in Canada? Why didn't you apply there, why US?
Me: The tuition fees were expensive and I couldn't afford it
Vo: Oh that's why you went for a PGD instead
Me: Yes
Vo: Have you been to the US before?
Me: No
Vo: Married, kids?
Me: No
Vo: Does anyone in your family have a visa
Me: No
Vo: So what will you do with this degree after school
Me: This degree will afford me the qualifications to take up a job at EFCC as an expert in fraud examination. I plan to work in the anti-money laundering and counter-financing of terrorist activities dept upon my return. In the long-run, I'd love to have my own forensic accounting firm where I'd be able to render consulting services to both the public and private sector.
Vo: Did you write any exams?
Me: Yes GRE and TOEFL
Vo: What did you score in GRE
Me: 296 (gave her the breakdown but she didnt ask for the report card)
Vo: Who's sponsoring you
Me: My mom
Vo: What does she do?
Me: she's a distributor for.............
Vo: Can I see her BS (she perused it well well)
Vo: Are you sure there's no other reason why you're going to NJ
Me: Not at all aside that MSU offers my preferred program
Vo: She reached for the white paper, ticked AP, said something about checking to see somethings check out and some other things i didn't hear clearly, wrapped my BS & I-20 in my passport and that was it. But the battle wasn't over till Friday when I picked up my passport.
I was on AP for a month, first 2weeks I heard nothing so I sent an inquiry mail but no reply. The 3rd week ended and I had to just call them and I guess that was when my BS were sent for verification. And the following week it got issued. TBH, this AP was torture especially having to wait a month. So many thoughts, High BP but special thanks to Ekebs & sunshine for encouraging me, e no just easy. My special gratitude to Folmus for reviewing my transcript and Winterstorm for the pep-talk before my interview day and to the elders here for your great contributions as my dream is now a reality.

Just finished filling my ds-160 but somehow I've not convinced myself enough to submit and sign it. Meanwhile I have an issue. My sponsor is my uncle who owns a trading company so money enters his company account and leaves almost immediately but it's daily and constant.

Now I'm wondering, if I present this type of statement and at the time the embassy wants to verify is when he has pulled out the money and waiting for another inflow, will this affect my chances?

Secondly my aunt has a fixed deposit of 19m, can I present the investment certification as proof of funds??

Can I on my ds-160 put both as my sponsors

Also, for a student, what's the acceptable length of stay?

cc lagosismyhome.

Guys please help.

Sir, i have a feeling you're going to be padding up your stories just to get your approval...i sincerely wish you all the best though! smiley

However, i know a thing or two about telling lies! You'll sense a need to tell stories and unfortunately they won't add up. The pressure you'd be under would make you slip up. And boom...the VO figures that out and the misrepresentation is going up on your record.

So please, don't sugarcoat anything. Tell the truth always and as weird as your truth might sound, stick to that truth! Just figure out a better way to prove you're telling the truth.

Finally my brother, you really don't know how to lie. And you i doubt you know how to express your lie! sad

Once again, I wish you all the very best!

Cheers. smiley

I am scheduling an interview for F1 and F2 visa for next month and I like to know if i need to come with my spouse, and 3 kids (8, 6 and 3 years old) to the embassy for the interview as they will be accompanying me.

We all currently hold B1/B2 which is valid till October 2019. Also, if it happens that my F1/F2 visa is cancelled, what will the effect be on our B1/B2 visa?
