Covenant University Would Produce A Nobel Laureate Before 2022 - Oyedepo by barojana: 4:01pm On Nov 05, 2018
As Covenant University works toward realising the vision 10:2022, when it would be listed among the 10 leading world-class universities by the year 2022, another goal has been placed before the entire faculty and staff of the University.

“Before the said date of 2022, at least one Nobel Laureate will rise from here”, the Chancellor, Dr David Oyedepo declared at the founders day ceremony.

Dr Oyedepo spoke on “Engaging the Power of Absolute Dependency on God” which he said was the secret behind the success story of Covenant University. “Absolute dependency on God is the platform for the rise of giants. Since everything produces after its kind, then if the Most High God is your source, you can’t be the lowest in your engagement. For everything you look up to in life, there is nothing like depending on God. Everything outstanding has the great God behind it.

“You can’t be a world-class university without a Nobel Laureate. All researchers here must trust Him and acknowledge Him at every point of breakthrough. Please, trust Him, don’t share in His glory, then you have committed Him to perform,” he emphasised.

The Chancellor also noted that the essence of Founder’s Day was to reflect on the faithfulness of God, to acknowledge Him as the source of all the positive experiences of the University. “What we are celebrating today are not achievements but ‘engracement’. We are what we are and where we are by the grace of God.”

Dr Oyedepo further reiterated his belief in the actualisation of the Vision 10:2022 which according to him, can only be realised by the hand of God “Vision 10:2022 is a done deal. I therefore congratulate you ahead of time,” he said.

The Chancellor and Chairman, Board of Regents used the occasion to pray for the faculty, staff and students for steadfastness, continuity and productivity,

The Vice-Chancellor, in his remarks itemized the successes of the University from inception and particularly, the first three years of his administration.

He noted that the University pioneered some programmes and ideas that have been adopted by the universities regulatory agency, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other universities in the country. Some of these according to him are Entrepreneurial Development Studies, dress code, abolition of pass degrees among others.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that the University has won many awards and accolades which stands the University out among the league of universities despite its young age. Of note was the gold awards won at the World Invention and Innovation Forum 2015 in Yanchang, China.

On the alumni platform, the VC informed that the University has produced over 16, 000 graduates referred to as ‘Eagles’ and noted that a great number of them are doing well in various sectors of the economy, ICT, aviation, agriculture, oil and gas as well as business and careers.

Insha Allah they will.
Covenant University should just introduce mixed-dormitories.
That's the only way a future Nobel-Laureate can be birthed from the school.

Tell me what specific prophesy he made that did not come to pass.
If i'm not wrong Oyedepo's prophecy goes thus.

"Ritual killers would", " Nigeria will not know war" etc. How do you guage or investigate the fulfilment of such prophecy?

That is really not just a prophecy but a visionary drive. The University has a solid strategic plan on how to bring this to reality.

And you would be amazed what Nigerian lecturers can do when backed by solid funding. The church is very willing to bankroll this venture. If anything i am very certain CU's dept of Economics has what it takes to produce a Nobel Prize Winner in Economics.

The university should set it's gaze on Economics. Economics is a good place to start. The only problem would be in the area of policy adoption...

Africa is a fertile ground for Nobel Prizes because of the many challenges bedeviling the continent, so if the school can nurture specific young lecturers in Economics to pick up a problem and go after it with maximum vigour propelled by a funding pool larger than what they need, they would definitely come back with that coveted prize.

Economics in Nigeria has a huge room for improvement that can be duly exploited but I think Agric too is another aspect.
In Nigeria we not only export raw crude to import finished products like petrol, we also export cocoa to import chocolate and 70% can't afford it. Nigeria is the fourth largest producer of cocoa.

Exactly!
The bishop has a better idea about making a Nobel laureate than what most people may realize.

One of the reasons Oyedepo is a role model to me is he has a way of identifying successful things and replicating it.
His thought process can be summarised into this "if that man can do this to get that result then i can copy what he did and get his results" Case study: his replication of Yongi Cho's 1 million congregation operations. The resemblance between Covenant and ORU is extraordinary, from compulsory chapel attendance to corporate dressing, the entrepreneurial drive of stanford. Till today Covenant doesn't take transfer students - even from the USA and never awards honorary degrees(deliberately cultivating prestige).

He followed Harvard's principle of not venturing into programmes they were not prepared for. Reason, why CU(richest private school) has never never ventured into Law or Medicine. It is not fear but strategy-A strategy that works for Harvard till tomorrow. When he declared Vision 10:2022, i'm sure NUC must have thought Oyedepo has actually gone mad grin No the man went and printed the vision everywhere on campus and kept repeating it to NUC anytime they visited. He led the management team to keep looking at the vision. I felt sorry for him that day he declared the vision. My lecturer was alarmed and felt insulted by the declaration of that vision, but today he is busy jumping telling everyone that CU is doing well. Now i don't feel sorry for him again. I now understand ridiculous ambitions are part of the 'Covenant Spirit'.

Oyedepo once said on visiting ORU, Texas. "If Roberts can build this here, then it can happen anywhere in the World". Today CU has surpassed the University on which it was spiritually modelled after-at least by Times Higher standard - very soon i would complete a book titled ....... becauae i am convinced he is a visionary radical.

Lee kuan yew of Singapore rarely did anything new to advance Singapore. In his words we simply copied other people's template and finetuned it to our own local need. This is the same brain power behind China's rise to prominence, they identify a problem, they study solutions of others and they go after it with everything they have. Case in study: China discovered its universities where lagging behind on all fronts. The country declared the "double first class mandate" which mandated 42 of China's best university to overtake western ones. Today, for the first time Tsinghua university China has surpassed Ntl Uni of Singapore as the best Asian institution and is coming close to Harvard and the likes while surpassing many other ivy leagues.

You can see what they are trying to do with their football league. China doesn't wait for the wind of positive change, they force it to blow in their direction.

That JF Kennedy's visionary spirit which says "Russia sent a man to the Space then America must send a man to the Moon" is very absent in Africa's leadership, dying out in Europe and on standstill in USA. And when few people try to stir the waters here in Africa we tell them many reasons why they can never succeed because we are too familiar with serial failures in govt.

The average black man is way too inclined to loathe others not his tribe that are progressing than to humbly learn and copy them well. Ofcouerse he can take some mainly for selfish self-serving reasons but not enough to wholly transform the essence of his psychological spectrum. Blacks are more used to remainong slaves to culture and be an ardent follower of group thiink in his circle and only kmow what rather than to question objectively; appreciate and weigh reasons; advantages; know why, why not and how independently.

A culture of appreciation of egocentric charlatanism or servitude over righteously indignant intelligience.

That is great goal but a very uphill task, especially in an academic field.

Since Wole Soyinka became the first African to be awarded the Nobel prize for an academic field (Literature: for his Drama and Poetry), and the 2nd black man in the whole world in an academic field after the Afro-Caribbean Economist, W Arthur Lewis (1979), there exist only 4 black Nobel Laureates in the whole world till date in an academic field, and Wole Soyinka remains the only black African till date in an academic field.

However, a couple of non-black Africans have since won in an academic field, 2 being in Literature after Wole Soyinka (1986), and they are the Arab Egyptian, Naguib Mahfouz (1988), and White South African, Nadine Gordimer (1991). Ahmed Zewail also an Arab Egyptian, won it in the scientific field of Chemistry (1999).

Many Africans, whether black, Arab, or White, have won in the Peace category.

Bold claim to make for a Nigerian university. The combined Nigerian intellectual talent at elite universities in the west - Harvard, Yale, MIT, Oxford, Cambridge, e.t.c - have yet to produce a Nobel laureate (apart from the Soyinka aberration).
