APologies for the Epistle, and pardon the typos below; figured i should answer ASAP based on free -time
. if i didn't answer any question, do not hesitate to ask, i would try my best to answer correctly and based on my lil experience.
Format: This is my understanding based on what i experienced, i don't think it has changed much.

It was a toss up between Citizen's bank and Discover Loan (i ended up going with this); The requirement include; a co-signer (US permanent resident or Citizen. Hopeful you have a relative that would be willing to help out) and the school you are heading to should have an affiliation with the bank, most schools do anyway. Usually, an I-20 is required as part of the documentation to finalise the process. SOme schools would forward your I-20 after you send a letter the lending company forwards to you , some schools don't (in situations like this this, the officer in charge should be able to work you through it).

It should not take more than 48 -72 hours to get response of approval with a good cosigner . then you are left with the bursar's office in your school to certify that the amount you claim is what is needed based on your I-20 estimate.

For indemnity note: it was more like a promissory note + property valuation note to my cosigner (an uncle) to take up an agreed portion of real estate that covers the loan heaven forbid shit hits the fan that i default. We had to do all this to show the cosigner funding wasn't an issue considering he was pretty much putting his financial neck in the noose.

I learnt one must be enrolled to apply for this stuffs(particularly Discover) how realistic can that be?

Regarding this heated argument, I want to join the fray. You see, the bane of most visa refusals boils down to laziness. I will explain.

Mr A comes here to share his interview success and how he got waivers. Mr B, the lazy opportunist, quickly inquires of Mr A about this 'certain school' and the next thing he applies without carrying out due research. Tell me how Mr B will make it during interview when all he did was apply because somebody else has succeeded there. Most people are simply copycats. And what they fail to understand is that interviews are case by case and conducted on the merits of what each candidate is able to present.

You don't learn how to shoot in the battle field, you learn before the battle. Visas are there for grabs, but you must show yourself qualified. VOs are not silly nor are they there to dance to your whims. Even the lowest ranked of universities/colleges can earn you a visa once you are able to show strong/compelling reasons why you chose them. You don't hear that people have been going to VIU, and you simply apply without your personal reasons and convictions...surely doom awaits you. My point is: any school is good to go, but you MUST show yourself approved thru a diligent research.

Concussively, it is not how far, but how well. When the journey is ended, what's next for you? US is interested in what you can offer in terms of skills, yes. But this is one place where I know your background history matters a lot. The Yale and Harvard graduates would just knock you off in the labour market because they enjoy the pedigree and corporate network. This is why you must also be selective in your choice of schools. But if you're studying to go back home and compete, that may work. After all, you have a certificate from Amelika grin.

Take your destiny in your hand!

PS: This thread is not here to spoonfeed you, but to give you a lead. Be smart, be proactive, get busy with research.

my understanding of the enrollment requirement is that you need to be enrolled for at least half-time of your program (this applies to grad school program...) it's realistic. If one is a full-fledged student (the rep at discover should be a good resource for you with regards to the credit hours you would be taking per year or whatever schedule your program is) that shouldn't be an issue.

The hardest part of the process at least for me was getting a co-signer (which is pretty much the toughest), most things aren't 100% guaranteed or fool-proof. I assume the intent of the loan is for fin doc for visa proceedings; scrutiny by the VO to ascertain your ties with the co-signer and you home country which one should be ready for shouldn't be a challenge.

Gabbybanks,

You'll be violating the terms of your visa. You shouldn't be working.

Kindly modify your post biko. Don't make a tough process more difficult for genuine students.

Cheers.

He might be talking about life after school. People who want to stay back after graduation always put schools, their locations and employment opportunities into consideration while searching for ones to apply to.

Okay. Here it is...........
V.O: I can see you are going to UNCG for a masters in peace and conflict studies?
Me: Yes,i am.
V.O: Why UNCG
Me: the major things i looked out for when applying was a school that offers my course,an affordable state, and the school's reputation. UNCG offers my course and an area that best fits my interest (negotiations and mediation), and its also one of the most prestigious US state owned universities and the students to faculty ratio is 18.1,which for me is a very good academic standard. North carolina on its own is one of the most affordable states in the country, and the standard of living there is great. And so for me, UNCG ticked of all my boxes in those areas.
V.O: did you apply to other schools , and where you accepted by all?
Me: answered in the affirmative.
V.O: Who is your sponsor?
Me: my dad and my maternal uncle.
V.O: What do they do?
Me: (explained to her)
V.O: (asks for their statements). She goes through it, and points out the part where my mum transfered a lump sum to my dad 2 days before the statement was printed. She asked who it was, and i explained to her that it was my mum.
V.O: i will be holding on to your passport and financial documents for further validation. You will be contacted in 3days. ( No white slip, no blue slip or even the pink letter)
An hour later i checked my status, and it was REFUSED.

ON THE SO-CALLED VISA MILL!

Who coined this term must have experienced something unsatisfactory not known to most of you that now spread it on this forum. There has never been visa mill schools, or schools that automatically warrant student visa refusal. A decade ago, every school is accepted at the US embassy, except if it is not accredited. And a school that's not accredited will not even issue an I-20 to international students. Back then a 29 years old gets visa on Community College I-20; back then full-scholarship equal 100% visa approval; back then, interview questions was hardly long. No checking of docs, no AP, no "you'll be banned for 10 years if this statement is found to be fake."

Students got denied, but on 2 or 3rd reappearance, visa is usually granted, except in rare cases. All schools, no matter the rank on US News and Report, is good to go. Even recently, Visas are still being issued.

What some JJC here call Visa Mill is simply the result of habit of copying schools, copying response to interview questions delivered by some other students that were granted, etc. I insist that every school accredited and registered with school code (as you would find on your I-20) is good enough for visa success. Of course, I am aware that the Ivy League school would be a bonus--if you are so intelligent enough to get admitted to one. Still, all schools in the US is cool.

There is a lot of visa refusal lately due to crowd. The US embassy understands what Nigerian youths are attempting to do. Homeland Security have profile and data of Nigerian youths who never report to their schools or stay for a semester, then disappear to hustle. They see the figures and as much as I am authority in this field, the figure is significantly high than those who actually have the funds, scholarship, or loan to start their degree or MS to the end. More Nigerian youths on student visa in the US are out of schools. The US embassy here in Nigeria is aware. Hence, they are trying to use the high rate of refusal to control the crowd and send a message that "We are only looking for credible, financially-capable students." This is simply the case.

And I have always shared on this forum: It is not everyone that will report to school and do their program to completion upon arrival. Life is hard, and this is the reality. The chances of getting a visiting visa for the under 40 at the US embassy is slim compare to the chances of using a student visa. Now, I am not encouraging you to misrepresent yourself at the embassy or with the kind of visa you're applying for. The point is, for example, I was aware of a young man who got his visa in 20??. He got to Texas A & M, and upon arrival to the school, he wanted to get a loan for his program as his parents back here cannot pay all the fees. Dad recently had stroke as financial burden at home escalates. The cousin he has in Houston, who had promised to be a co-signer, turned him down and back off from signing the paper. At this point, he had to look for alternative. Took the path I don't want to start writing about. Got his green card, and 3 months ago, he got accepted to the University of Maryland to study Cybersecurity. He is doing his MS now while working. His company is helping with tuition reimbursement.

The key to getting your student visa approved is not one. Based on my findings, destiny, purpose, plan, preparation, and sometimes, God's Will, all play a role. I have personally witness students whose life turn upside down because they travelled to the US. I have seen students who shine brightly and stand out in the US community they are studying because they found themselves at home.

So, to close up on the Visa Mill issue, I'd say any school is find. The important thing is to stay focus, work hard, pay your dues, and try. All that life requires from us is TRYING! Then do not make getting a student visa a do or die thing. Those of you that have been refused must be philosophical about it. When you are philosophical about a difficult situation, you accept the difficult situation as a part of life. Doing this relieves you of pain, agony and fear, and then gives you strength to try again.

So, if you get accepted to a school, prepare your own tailored response to the general interview questions. Please, don't copy another student response and use it as your own during the interview. be original. Be innovate; read the compiled list of transcripts here. Use your profile, intention for studies, experience, plan, academic and career goals to create your response to interview questions. If you don't know how to do that as this is the case for those of you who haven't developed the skills of putting your ideas in clear writing (perhaps, head full), contact those that may help you on this forum. People like this are many here. (In cases my hands were not tied and I was in mood to help, I have helped several students from here. Some of them got approved, while others were refused, but with chances that if they reapply might be granted)

NEVER COPY THE TRANSCRIPT YOU SEE HERE. CREATE YOUR OWN! BE ORIGINAL! BE YOURSELF. To break out of this country is not easy, but it's an adventure worth embarking if it align with your purpose on earth.

I'll also like to note: Don't be scared of top universities in the US. If you apply for fall 2019 very early and you have outstanding SAT score, TOEFL score, high GPA, with good writing skills, you can try the University of Southern California, Pepperdine University in Malibu, Stanford University, all the Universities of California, Brandeis University, University of Chicago, Princeton, etc. The list is long and all these schools offer high scholarship. University of Southern California, for example, will offer full scholarship to any students who meets its top requirements...

For Masters, so many schools offer in-instate tuition, full GA, etc to international students.

Use the following search string to search for these schools:

*US Universities that offer Graduate Assistantship

*US Universities with full-ride scholarship for international students

*Affordable Universities in the US for (your program)

Take each school at a time. Once you click the link and gets in, quickly navigate to Admissions, then International Students, Scholarship, Admission Requirements, etc. Once you check a school and does not offer what you want, close the browsing tab immediately, then check the next school, etc. When you see a school you like, write the name down on a paper. I have always said the hardest task is finding a school that offers what you are looking for. Some of you complain that you can't find the right school because you rely on your phone. Use your laptop, or go to cyber cafe and buy a whole day browsing time. You may need to search for a week to get what you are looking for. Whatever the case, there is a school for every student. Always.

I hope this is helpful
