DDT I think is the constituent of sniper I know it is an insecticide. My worry is I hope it is mixed in the right proportion. If not this is tantamount to poisoning the beans.

The insult for this thread na wa.

The sniper is basically being used by those guys for preservation. The trader is preserving those beans with a diluted sniper. Note that the active ingredient in that Sniper is a compound called dichlorvos
Two years ago, the European Union (EU) banned Nigerian beans because of the high level of dichlorvos pesticide residue at 0.3, which was beyond the 0.1 acceptable limit in the beans. The issue here is we don’t know if the level of concentration is within the 0.1 limit.
Other chemicals like Chlorpyrifos, Cyhalothrin, Dimathoate, Trichlorphon, Omethoate and so on were also discovered in high, unacceptable levels in dried beans for export.
These pesticides were either applied in the farm during cultivation or at storage to preserve the beans from weevils.
To tackle this problem, the Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) system was developed by Larry L. Murdock, professor of Entomology at Purdue University, USA and scientists in Cameroon in a research funded by a USAID and the university’s International Programs in Agriculture.
The PICS consists of two high-density polyethylene plastic bags, and an outer sack of nylon that protects them. It can store grains safely for eight to 12 months without the produce being damaged by insects.
To make the technology available to farmers in Nigeria, a company based in Kano State has been given the license to produce the bags for farmers and merchants for grains and beans storage.
The system reduces the amount of damage the weevils inflict upon stored beans and other grains.
[/quote]

I prefer this method with the bags. Sure there will be some spoilage by the weevils, but the reduction in consumption of pesticides is more than worth it.

I just hope that we can redistribute the bags to Farmers because a lot of Farmers resort to heavy use of pesticides to cut losses to the weevils.

It's meant for preservation. Sniper is only dangerous when used raw but more of a preservative agent when diluted.
The trader is doing the right thing by preserving those beans with a diluted sniper.
The poisonous substances will evacuate the beans immediately when cooked due to the pressure exerted by the boiling point of the water. Hence, returning the beans to its normal state and then ready for human consumption.
If a less educated trader can know all these, imagine what she'll do if she's more enlightened. We have to step up our game in science and education.

Excuse me !!!!which sniper is meant for food preservation? What food product did they write on the plastic? How many people out there knows that the beans they are eating has been mixed ? There are agricultural approved pest control products such as celphos, alphos, quick phos, phostoxin etc, but this daura2019 will never use it. I've seen people die of food poisoning bro. You don't want to see sniper go wrong abeg

Honestly.

This is why our beans exports are rejected.

Does the comment that it's an old practice mean it's safe? We need to understand what we are doing to our bodies.

How can anyone with right thinking mind mixed such poisonous substance just to preserve beans when there are or less dangerous orthernative in the market no wonder lots of people are dying like chicken at a very young age these days!!!!

Thank you o!

The other name for sniper is dichlovors which is a preservative for storing beans worldwide. I think its just some few years ago that the EU lifted it ban on importation of Nigerian beans. Initially, Nigerian beans was banned because the concentration of dichlovors was far above the standard used worldwide, which has health implication especially that of the GIT. But, seems we finally comply to the world standard concentration for storage. Please don't be misled but informed

I'm sorry but I don't know that the ban has been lifted.

It is very obvious that we are our problem. From canned foods to farm produce. e.g. Palm oil, now beans, rice. All this grain food are all mostly target.

We will never forgive Lord Lugard for joining North and South as one Nigeria.

The feeling is quite mutual; I also often wonder why we should be joined with such emotionally immature tribal bigots; who clearly prefer to embrace ignorance than common sense.

I watched and listened to the video very carefully and found no evidence, from the accent and physical appearance, that suggested boys were northerners let alone Hausa; however, the clear distinctive voice in the foreground (seemingly of the person taping the video) directing them, in English, to mix it very well, came across as southern - contrary to the OP's claims.

The chemical was banned in Europe as an INSECTICIDE in 1998 and he said they allow it to be used as a food preservative?

Lol!!!

Its a way of preserving it from insects and they don't do it with beans alone even with dried fish they bring from borno, they dilute the sniper with water and spray on the fish to keep insect always else before it get to the west or south that's another story.
Moreover I think whenever poison is heated it loses it Powers.

Not true that when poison is heated it loses potency! The fact our food quality is poor doesn't mean it is the right thing!

Please shut up! You don't know how the outside world works you just lay on your bed with your phone plugged to the charger close to you, log in to nairaland and form wise sage. Come back and say this when you are a farmer producing tons of beans or better go buy one very large bag of beans(50kg or so) and don't preserve it, or preserve it with your glorious "Alternative" option.

Even the white men you worship use dichlovors(Sniper as we call it) to preserve their cereals. At the end the dosage or concentration is what matters.

Is that cereal for human consumption? That is the real question you should ask before jumping to conclusions

dichlovors was banned in Europe in 1998 for use as INSECTICIDE. And you are saying Europe that don't want citizens to use it as insecticide will allow it to be used to preserve food?
They know farmers use it on farm as pesticides. So they know it will contaminate the final product. So they determined acceptable level of the contaminant. Not that EU allow it to be used to preserve food meant for human consumption.

EU lifted the ban on the condition beans to be exported to EU won't be preserved with such poison.

Even them use dichlovors(Sniper as we call it) for preservation of their cereals, The dosage is what matters and they have even lift the ban on our beans exportation because we have finally reach an acceptable dosage of your killer sniper. But here you are forming smart and intelligent and you don't even know any of your so called safer alternatives. Last last you go still buy beans wey them use dichlovors preserve unless you no wan chop beans again or even other cereals. I am sure it's your type that thinks Yam grows on trees.

I won't waste precious time educating you again, That's not my job.

dichlovors was banned in EU in 1998! They don't use it as insecticide anymore. And you are claiming what they don't use as insecticide because of fear it will contaminate water, they will allow it to be used to preserve food?

For your information, when I saw the way we treat food in Nigeria, I now keep animals for my own protein. This year, I planted beans for my own use. I buy beans once a year at harvest. Just one bag (about 100kg), I freeze it and use for a year. My health is very important to me
