You are wrong bro. very wrong on that one... The reason is they see what you dont see.

They have the money to bribe corrupt officials and they know that Nigerians can sell their souls for money.

That is what they saw.

but how do you get comfort abroad if you are not working for cash. Or do you think comfort is free of charge.
You will work..Yes!! But not everyone wants to be rich. For instance, Americans are not rich. Some of them are just within the middle-class and live a comfortable life, while in Nigeria u have all the money, but cannot get basic amenities which can make life comfortable.

Different strokes for different folks. I was in my early twenties when my life got filled with a lot of uncertainties as to where I'm gearing towards in life. I didn't think I was going to make it abroad, I just didn't see any prospect in sight back home in Nigeria. Dropped out of Uni because I was studying a course I had no ounce of interest in, which I had to or stay at home under my parents roof. Opportunity arrived to move to the UK and I didn't give it a second thought.

I came with dreams and hopes which is paying off. Now in my final year in University and course of choice while working part time for a mobile phone retailer company with a good chance of moving up the ladder.
I have friends who are happy with their security jobs and also have friends who have masters degree working in notable firms, from multinational engineering companies to the NHS. I'm not here to tell a success story but considering I am literally a "nobody" back home where favouritism and nepotism has eaten deep into the system. I have no chance of attaining this achievements if I'm still in Nigeria.
Bottom line is, the system works here and everyone is given a fair chance. The system simply doesn't work in Nigeria. (If we have one in the first place)

@ thebosstrevor, do you know how many (talented/resourceful) Nigeria that can't achieve their dream in this country and they will die with their dream. Nawa! the system embedded is corruption, even my dear thebosstrevor, whatever you have achieve in Nigeria can you share your story with us? Its only minute Nigerians excel without the backing of "WHO YOU KNOW AND WHO YOUR PAPA BE". This is the reality all the start up or whatever progremmes in our Great country is skewed to their favor.
Back to the Chinese and Koreans you mentioned, go do a research and see the level of support their Govt gives them and our corrupted system gives them the leverage to strife over hard working Nigerian youth. Ask them well well them go tell you. Plant cassav na cassava go get, If you know or understand you understand.

we complain too much in this country. No body wanna sweat but want to eat fat

pls stop lying asians and whites create businesses and employ their own. Nigerians want to wash toilet abroad. We have plenty of dirty toilet in nigeria, why is there no dignity in labour in washing our own toilet first.

You wouldn't make a living washing toilet in Nigeria but you can in the west, Nigerians are not the only people washing toilet abroad, British, American, Eastern EU citizens all do cleaning job.

Yes there is no dignity of labour in Nigeria

Many of the people who travel abroad ain't just looking for where to make money, rather they seek sane societies where things work properly. Where they can apply for a job and be considered based on what they have to offer and not based on political connection. They also seek quality healthcare at affordable cost, constant power supply, good transport system, security of lives and property, good education etc. Those are the things Nigeria has failed to offer them and that is why they are leaving!

Some would want them to come home and build their country, and I ask; how do you build a country governed by selfish, wicked and demonic leaders who are in no way interested in seeing the country change for good Watch the kind of machinations the evil men in power today are trying to employ to manipulate the upcoming election in their favour, how do you expect the common man to build the country under such political atmosphere

Thank you,

if you earn ₦200,000 per month and you decide to go into poultry business and a foreigner or a 'diaspora Nigerian' who earns $50,000 monthly who is going to be more successful in the poultry biz between you and the foreigner or 'diaspora Nigerian'...

Nigerians with degrees and Nigerians who do their masters or uni in this countries are doing well for themselves....

About the "shackles"... most foreigners have had their great grand parents wealth passed down to them, so they have access to money most Nigerians who have lived their entire lives in Nigeria don't have...

its about been able to compete economically... most Africans are not in a position to compete economically and their politicians are not helping them out...
So you are suggesting the only way to succeed is by moving out of Nigeria? Will this continue like this forever? What if these countries bar Nigerians from coming in does it mean we can't help ourselves? We have what it takes to help ourselves but we are just not making any serious effort to solve our problems.

@op why do Nigerians think it is all about money?

What about quality of life? Last time I checked the life expectancy in that shit-hole is around 50 years. Moving to country like Germany automatically increases your life expectancy by about 30 years on the average.

What about opportunity? Yes you can make money in Nigeria but then how much are we talking about? Being a middle class doesn't spare your children the horror of everyday life in Nigerian or how uncertain the future look. Unless you are among the top earners in Nigeria which will afford you the means to ship your children abroad for a better life. Which brings me back to the question if Nigeria is that great after making the money since that is your sole indicator of a wonderful life why don't you leave your kids in Nigeria instead of carting them away?

To the average man on the street, Nigeria is one of the worse place to be born and to live in. Go to the west the average man on the street has a prospect if they work towards it. In Nigeria working hard towards your goal doesn't cut it, you have to be very lucky and know people. I know that there are group of people that will counter this point but my question to those people is to compare the number of those that did it without knowing anyone with those that knew someone. While when you look at the west the element of luck and knowing someone is insignificant on how your life turns out.

@op you won't know the quality of life until you get home from work, flip the switch and there is power. Step into your tube and take a warm bath thereafter relax in your sofa without any worries of whether the power will be on when you wake up in the morning or if the tap will be running in the morning. You wont known the quality of life or what it really means to make it until you have emergency medical condition and all you need to do is dial emergency services and their will be medical personnel right there at your home to save your life.

Even in your so called money haven- even if you managed to amass a lot of money when you have medical emergency the service you will get is a far cry from a decent one. I forgot all your billionaires are still running abroad for medical checkup.

As for the poor man he is on his own!

Yes to me making it, is living in a society where everyone has equal or at least near equal opportunity of charting the course of their lives.

Making it to me is living in a society where I don't have to worry about the mundane things of life like security, health , education, human right, job security etc. You can be making money but mine and I can speak for most people is living in a decent society.

To us that is what making it is all about!

you have said it all

I have noticed that many Nigerians think they can only make it abroad, even though,we are blessed with a large market, what is stopping nigerians from seeing opportunities in their own country?

I have spoken to many chinese( age 20 to 30) they all seems to have very low education, some of them do not have degrees like us but they are making it big time in nigeria, even a north korea man i met in an exhibition in lagos is doing great here in nigeria.

But nigerians are trooping out of their country like nothing works in nigeria.
Go and ask Nigerian Govt why are their kids trooping abroad. undecided

I think it's simply because Nigerians, most especially their youths, too like already-made things.

It is in their blood.

For instance, their young women want already-made husbands.

When it comes to earning money, most of their youth will go for already-made jobs rather than starting their own business.

So it shouldn't surprise anyone when these youths head for abroad to 'make it' there in an already-made flourishing and buoyant economy rather than making their own economy to become vibrant.

No wonder one wise king once termed them ''lazy youths''.

does the country look like some thing that can be built?

God bless you. I am in a few International educational and professional group and I tell you, sometimes I feel good being a Nigerian. The number of Nigerians in these groups are beyond what I expected and are doing great stuffs. Many are post doc fellows in these countries. Atimes I find myself with some other and o start to think otherwise. Truth remains majority of Nigerians don’t have plans. Money comes before purpose to many which is very wrong. Purpose comes before money in any situation.

lol. yes, purpose comes before money, ask a young nigerian child what they want to be when they grow up and you will see sincerity in their answers, however, they remain persistent on what they want until they write jamb and they couldn't be admitted because they don't know any one or have money to bribe their way, they u will see focus and purpose change.

The few that got admitted, graduated but couldn't secure a job because they are not connected will immediately change the purpose .

na person wey 1st chop de think other things.

Every focus now lands on making money, because here in naija once u have enough money , u can get anything done.

even the ones that didn't go to formal education, has their dreams shattered because there is no support anywhere.

if I know whit assurance that once I am done school that I am going to be gainfully employed no matter the course I read. that my researches will always be funded . why wont I be calm and focused on my purposes?

I work in on of the financial institutions in naija, Nnewi precisely is where my branch is located, Nnewi is also a town where the teaching hospital is located, I interact with people because of my job. most of these medical/ nursing students are not here because of the passion for the job but because they are employable anywhere with high pay. that is what naija environment has made them to understand.

here u read medicine because u can or because u r intelligent not because u have passion for humanity
all because u wouldn't want to die of hunger.

in USA, u read medicine because of the humanity reasons or some reasons that is not entirely about the money.

in USA , u read fine and applied arts because of the passion for that.

here in NAIJA u only read fine and applied arts because that is the only department that can offer you an admission and everyone is ok with it, why? because what matters is that once u graduate, u can work in a bank even when u read hausa language provided you are well connected.

the system here is so messed up. it Is not that we dont know about purposes in life, but we cant do them on empty stomachs.

here, there is nothing like building a career. it is all about surviving first.

the only set of people that came close to having careers are teachers/lecturerers , but what kind of career would that be when a professor in mechanical engineering doesn't know what to do his car when it develops a fault or a professor in electrical engineering calls an apprentice electrician to come change bulbs in his house?

Nigerians are just looking for countries that can give them what Nigeria cant give them. Nigerians do better in a saner climes than in Nigeria.

As someone who was born and raised abroad. My feeling is that it's largely due to the exchange rate. Like many I have family who would be considered either on the richer or poorer ends of the spectrum. The richer one's have no interest in living abroad whatsoever rather they see it as just a place for holiday etc. I would at least 80% of the Nigerian-born immigrants based in the UK I encounter would prefer to live in Nigeria rather than the UK if they could make the "right kind" of money.

Now onto the actual question. It's simple, there is a believe that the system abroad rewards hard work/determination which indeed is most true in comparison to Nigeria. The only thing I would say is there does seem to be a naivety that "abroad=better life". A lot forget there are so many that end up living a worse life than they did in Nigeria, so it's something that needs to be weighed up carefully.

I laugh in Swahili!

A friend of mine, a nurse moved to USA 5 months ago. She got her first pay check last week having worked for a month. As a starter in nursing, she earns $15 hourly and works on the average 16 hours : 15×16 = 240
Daily earning - $240
Monthly earnings - $6000
$6000 × N365 = N2,190, 000.00

Here in Nigeria she earns about N48, 000 monthly as a nurse here before moving to US.

If you divide her monthly earning in the US with what she earned monthly while here in Nigeria, that will be about 4 years earnings.

With the above picture, going abroad has it.

Those who are comfortable are the rich. Pls note that Materialism is not the same as basic amenities. These are mandatory and is a must. For instance, in a medical centre I know, when your going for antenatal check up, you need to go with your own hand gloves and cotton wool. For God sake, why can't the hospital make provision for that? Now is that materialism..Ask yourself??
