Misplaced Identity

Noises, laughter, scream.
He opened his eyes. The expression that might be found on a man that had just woken was the grim expression. This was the expression on his face. Yet, he wasn't having such expression because it was typical of a person waking. Rather, he was having the expression because he couldn’t help it.
The room of someone who was just waking was supposed to be his or her room, but he was sure he had never seen that room before in his life. The shoes should be his. But he couldn’t remember ever putting any of them on. Even the clothes on the hanger should be his own, but he couldn’t remember ever putting any of them on.
That was curious. Where was he? Who was he?
A phone beside him vibrated and rang the moment he placed his back on the wall. There was only one way to know he wasn't dreaming. He inhaled and exhaled, slowly and repeatedly. Yet, he couldn't remember a single thing. Still dazed, he glanced at his vibrating phone to see who the caller was: My Love. My love? He didn’t have any love or did he?
‘Hello, Jerry dear, how are you?’ A lady said into the earpiece the moment he placed his phone on his ear, happiness radiating in her voice. 'I don't even need to ask. That bed must be weak by now'.
‘I’m fine’, he said and changed his mind, ‘I’m not fine. I’m not fine. Who are you?’
‘Who…? Jerry, what are you saying?’
‘I don’t know you. I don’t know who you are’.
‘What are you saying? You don’t know me? Wait... Why will you have the effrontery to say you don't know me. Jerry, who is there with you?’
‘Here with me? Of course, nobody’, Jerry said. At the same time, some ladies bickering outside his room talked louder. ‘Is that not the voice of a lady?’
‘Yes… No’.
‘You are a liar. You are cheating on me’.
‘Cheating on you? I don’t even know you’.
‘Me…? Shade?’
‘Shade?’
‘Ah! Jerry, you are a pretender, and I know what to do to you’.
She disconnected the call. Jerry stared at the phone with his mouth agape as his eyes darted from one part of the room to another. He smacked his head again.
‘Where am I? Who am I? What is wrong with me?’ He asked himself as he climbed out of the bed.

Chapter 2

Cutting the Last Hope
Jerry glanced about in the room again to be sure he was seeing well. How sure was he that his name was even Jerry? He sat on the edge of the bed, dejected, with his head between his hands as he stared at the ground. What did he do yesterday? No idea. Where was he?
He gently opened the door to avoid surprising himself. The street was dusty. His eyes roamed the street to savor it. Little children ran about in the street. A man on a bicycle rode in a haste. A jeep cruised the street rather slowly as if it was a very fat woman, who had been asked to compete in a 100-meter race, but couldn’t help being the last.
Birds on the wires sang happily as if the whole world was in their care. The sky was white; birds were scanty in it, maybe because the sun was very hot or because everything was dry or because they were migrating out of that part of the world. He looked at the street and knew he didn't know this place. Nothing could change that fact.
He returned to the room and checked everything in the room, leaving no tiny stone unturned. That was when he saw five diaries that belonged to him. When he had savored the information in them, he knew who he was.
His name was Jeremiah Olusola Olumide, and was born on June 25th, 1991. He looked at his calendar and saw that he celebrated his birthday the previous day. Could it be hangover? There was no logical explanation for what had happened to him.
At first, he didn’t believe the diaries were his until he wrote a few words on one of them and saw a semblance in the writings. His girlfriend's name was Shade, the lady that called. His parent died last five years, and his best friend and only friend, Martins died of HIV four months ago.
Shade knew everything about him because he told her everything. He had cheated on Shade five times. Him? The last time he asked for her forgiveness, she promised that time would be his last. In fact, she said any day she smelt any form of cheating she would leave him for good. That meant he would soon know all about himself. He must see her.
He had been given a job at an international school, where he would be paid 150,000 naira per month. Good for him.
'Can I teach?'
He got an Hp laptop some days ago and was still pondering on the password to use, and gave himself the ultimatum of the day he woke.
Although he felt compelled to seat still with the hope that he would recollect all that had happened to him, he knew he needed to act to get more information. He picked his phone to call Shade. Her phone rang at the other end and was disconnected immediately. He looked at the phone, frowned, and redialed the number.
‘You are a cheat’, someone shouted, banging her way through the door.
He was short of words by what he saw. The desire to like a dog fell on him. He would have succumbed to this desire if he didn't have to beg her. The air was filled with mixture of dryness from the season and mountain flower perfume- her perfume.
She was very fair, and busty. Her round face was well-dressed with make-up. Even, as her long eyelashes went up and down, showing perfect white eyes, his blood rate increased.
‘Are... Are you Shade?’ he said, still staring at her. Her demeanor showed someone that should be worshiped. Her leggings showed her perfect curves. Without a moment's thought, he went on his knee.
‘Please, don't leave me. I need you to help me know myself'.
‘Shut up!' She shouted, 'so… You think… In your mind of mind that you can make me cry over you again. God forbid'.
‘Please’, he cried and held her hand. The hand was smooth and as soft as butter, and its nails, neat.
'Leave my hand', she snapped.
She withdrew and pulled her hand as if his hands were filled with maggots.
‘You are useless', she muttered as she tried opening the back cover of her phone. Her breathe rushed out in faster progressions, and her hands vibrated rigorously as she removed the battery of her phone, then the sim card. She raised the sim card up for him to see it clearly, and broke it.
‘You will never ever see me or call me again and for your information', she said as she eyed him vigorously, and smiled wickedly. ‘I’m leaving Fortune City'.
Jerry felt an invisible bell ring in his head.

Chapter 3
Saviour of The Night

The weeks that followed Shade’s sudden disappearance from his life weakened the hope that he had harbored in his heart of ever having a relationship with her. He hoped she would guide his path. Nothing looked like hope.
Seeing this, he decided to live a normal life. If it was anything near normal. Fortunately for him, he had written the password to most of his things in his diary. That gave him ample opportunities to withdraw money from his bank after he discovered that he was two million naira rich.
Jerry started teaching English in the school, and nothing made him happier than to know that he was good at teaching English. He was enjoying every stay in that part of Greencity. In fact, he enjoyed listening to other teachers tell their experiences, especially the wayward ones. He loved the way they enthusiastically described their evil deeds, putting comma to every of their sentences, and using the appropriate adjectives to describe their escapades.
After school, he would walk about the area to see if there was anything to remind him of who he was. but nothing brought back the memory. So, he decided to remain in his comfort zone: go to school, sleep, eat, and the rest, enjoying his new and perfect life.
Later, he joined a church and was active there, studying the bible as if it was the only thing in the world. Pastor Matthew was his favorite pastor. Once he even helped Pastor Matthew escape from some people that called him crazy.
Pastor Matthew had just returned from a mental home after the psychiatrists told them he was better. He said God wanted him to keep wild animals. So, he paid some hunters who got him some breeds of snakes. These reptiles escaped and gave people the scare. Jerry believed he wasn't crazy and helped him escape when his church members tied him down.
Sometimes, Jerry would do some background research on himself, but he always met a dead end; in fact, when he got to the schools he saw in his certificates, they didn't give him helpful information. Even the phone numbers they gave him were either wrong or not available. And for four months, he kept searching all about himself until he knew there was nothing he could do to bring back the past.
Therefore, he decided to let it go- everything- because from what the teachers at his school had been saying, having a family can even be disastrous. Nothing was as good as living alone. One got the chance to enjoy one's life. His laptop was very useful as he watched many films on it. Although he didn't know how he got the films on it, he let it go. After the third month of trying to remember, he decided that he had to let go and enjoy every bit of his life. People in the house didn't know him and were only trying to make acquaintances with him. He loved it that way. Jerry was satisfied.
It was with this mind-set he got out of his room on the night of October 30, around 12.30 a.m. The night was as dry as usual, the light had been off for four days and all his gadgets had died from him over working them. He had used his phone to play game after his laptop went off. Even the sky had been dry ever since he woke in June. There had been no record of rain anywhere in Brown Valley, Greencity, Black Town, and Suncity- the cities that are in the private Island called Fortune City. Despite the torrents of rain in the other parts of the world, they didn't get any.
Sitting on a chair in the dark night was cool. His heart lurched with happiness as he imagined himself living in a dark world for years. He mouthed Nathaniel Bassey’s song
Summer, Winter, Autumn spring.
Mountain, blue sky and the sea.
Rainbow sunshine and the trees
Jesus, maker of them all.
Everywhere I go I see you right there
In the beauty of nature, you shine al…
Something shuffled past him. He didn’t know what it was, but he knew that he had to enter his room. So, he picked his chair and rushed into the house. As he turned to close the door, someone pushed the door with so much force that Jerry fell. Quickly, he bounced back up.
‘Who is there?’ He whispered as against the noise he wanted to make.
‘Shhh’, the person hissed angrily like a snake, which tail was stepped on. Jerry held his breathe.
Several legs shuffled outside his room. That made him wished his room wasn’t opened to the street. The people outside raised their voices in desperation.
‘Catch him’.
‘He must not escape’.
‘Today must be his last’.
Jerry was transfixed. If he moved near that person, he might be injured. There was no light to show him who the person was. However, from the people outside, he understood that this person was a gentleman of the night. If caught, he would receive immediate death sentence.
Feeling terrible, Jerry shifted weight from one leg to another. In his few months in Fortune City, he had come to the realization that only a lazy person would beg in the private Island.
When the people left his arena, and decided to check other parts of the area, the power holding company of Fortunecity restored the light.
The first thing in Jerry's room to report was the old fan, which hummed-on angrily like an injured cow. The person before Jerry was panting hard and held a gun so hard that if it were a glass cup, it would have broken. The body texture of the thief surprised him. He swallowed hard. his Adam’s apple made a loud noise and made the thief glance at him. He was sure that he was seeing right. The thief was a lady.
‘I can’t let you stay here’, he muttered.
Sensing he would do what he said, she rose suddenly. Jerry moved back with fear, and raised his hands to prepare himself. Threatened thieves would do anything from maiming their attackers to killing them to elude being caught. Instead of doing any of what Jerry assumed, the lady went on her knees, clasping her hands.
‘Please, Bide…bro…’ she said, with a silky voice, 'don’t let them catch me’.
‘But you are a lady, why did you join these people?'
‘It’s a long story. Please spare me and I promise you will not regret it. Someday, I will come back to help you’.
He felt sad for her. ‘You can’t help me… I’m the one that can help you, and what I want of you and from you is that you stop stealing’.
Immediately, she raised her hands in the I-surrender position, and whimpered like one that had been shown a greater wisdom. Her mask was still on, making her look like a robot.
‘I will not steal again’.
Jerry’s eyes went to the wall and knew that he had to do something for her, and the first thing was to switch off the light, and the next was to shelter her.
‘Alright, give me your gun till tomorrow’, he said as he locked the door.
The lady looked at the gun and looked at him, then shrugged. She brought her hands forward and looked at Jerry as if he has been forewarned. When she handed the gun to Jerry, he burst into a terrible laughter that jolted her.
‘You do not mean you were using a toy gun?’ He said and smiled.
He turned the gun in his hand. For a fragment of seconds, he wished the gun was real. So that he would use it to shoot himself later in the day, to end his trouble.
‘Well, you have to wait till tomorrow. Sleep here’, he said, pointing to his bed.
‘No. Don’t worry; I’ll sleep here on the floor’.
‘No.No. Do come and sleep here’.
She agreed and laid on the bed after putting off her shoes. Instead of sleeping, she sat at the farthest corner of the bed holding herself tightly.
Jerry switched off the light, plunging the room into utmost darkness. The only light reflecting in the room was that the bulb outside shining through the curtain. He decided to lie down, to sleep.
Suddenly, the noise of the searchers came again and this time to his door. They knocked.

Chapter 4

The Last Piece of Peace

Jerry shook his head to ward off the fear that gathered in his heart. At that moment, he needed to have a clear head else it would be a bad news for both of them. He didn’t see the lady but he heard the bed squeak. The heavy knock came again. He quickly went to the bed.
‘Hide under the bed’, he whispered the moment his leg touched the bed, ‘hide’.
‘Yes?’ He called with a drowsy but loud voice, making the bed creak to make them assume he was just getting off it.
With relief that she was hiding well and that he was pretending well, he got ready to face the task of warding off her pursuers.
‘Yes…?’ He called again, ‘Who is there?’
‘Street youths’.
‘This night? What do you want?’
‘Bro. Jerry, it's me, your landlord. Please, open the door. We want to ask you something important’.
Jerry gently opened the door and was stunned by the sight that met him. All he could do was to stand his ground, open the door and make sure his legs were covering the exposed part of the house. Hefty men stared at him with cold glare and heaving sweaty body. In fact, the lanky ones looked hefty to Jerry as he swallowed his spittle agitatedly. Many of them carried clubs, cutlasses, or rods, making him wonder how he would live to see these people beat up the lady. He couldn’t release her to their hunger for a kill. They will make her disappear under their beating as if she were a mist.
‘Yes?’ He said as his blood raced like wild boars within his body and his heart pumped like illegally freed prisoners.
‘Did you see anybody?’
‘This midnight?’
‘Yes’.
‘He ran through this house’, someone chipped in.
‘No, I didn’t see anyone’, Jerry said.
‘Gentleman’, a short man said, moving forward with an aggressive look, 'the thief can only run through this place or crawl into your place. Don't turn us to actors. I don't act. I find thieves and tear them to piece. I don't act’.
‘Small’, a hefty man that can easily be passed as their leader raised his right hand and faced Jerry. His lip had a wicked smile lingering on it. ‘In case you hear anything or suspect anything, please raise an alarm’.
‘Ok’, Jerry nodded as he held onto the door as if it was his only covering, and even pulled it to himself well when one the pursuers stretched his neck to see the room.
‘Let’s go’ the leader said as they hurried away.
Jerry panted and had to take all the effort in the world not to slam the door in relief.
‘They are gone’, he whispered.
The lady scrambled out of her hiding, sat on the edge of the bed, and dropped her hands on her lap and stared into the oblivion. Jerry placed his hand on his mouth, watched her for some minutes and felt like schooling her on the need for contentment. But he decided against it, shrugged, and went to the switch off the light. And as he switched it off. Voices filtered in.
‘The guy is lying like Fayez's mother. I know people like them’, someone shouted angrily. Jerry looked out of the window and saw that their number had increased, 'this is the only place the thief could have entered'.
‘Okay’, the leader said and talked to them in low tone.
Jerry rushed to his wardrobe, brought out a short, a wrapper and one of his big polo.
‘Get off the bed, and remove your cloth’, he whispered hurriedly, his heart pumping hard against his chest. The noise of the men got nearer, and their shuffling feet grew louder.
The lady hesitated for some seconds and that made Jerry stopped breathing for some minutes. He felt like smacking her across the cheek.
‘You are silly’, he groaned in anger as he rushed to her, and pulled off her clothes and her boots, making her hands fly to cover her unclothedness. The noise grew louder. He smirked.
He removed the cloth and gave her the ones he brought out of his wardrobe. She wore them hurriedly as if there was fire on her body and the cloth would quench it.
Jerry lifted the mattress, dropped the clothes and the boots under it and was about to drop the bed when he remembered something.
‘Are you out of your mind?’ he grumbled, pure anger reflecting in his voice, ‘your mask’.
She bit the mask and hesitated again. Jerry spun his head, rushed to her, and peeled it off her head.
‘Wow’, he mouthed as he saw her head. The first attention grabber was her nose. It was not like any other nose, not too slim and not too big. She had an emerald face. One could stare at it for days, weeks, months, and years and still have the desire to keep staring. His heart lurched as he saw her searching, white and oval eyes. Jerry was dumbfounded for that milliseconds as he stared into those eyes and felt like wiping away all fear and danger from it. The expected knock came, making him jolt out of his semi-trance.
‘Lie down… For this few seconds, you are my girlfriend’, he whispered.
She nodded and got into the bed, covering her body with the wrapper.
‘Yes…’Jerry shouted angrily, ‘who is there? Why are you people disturbing me?’
He turned back to confirm that she was fully prepared. He grinned and gave her thumb-up. Then, he saw the gun he collected from her. Although it was a toy gun, he knew the implication of having it around. So, he ran back and tucked it under the mattress. Then, he opened the door.
‘Bro…’The leader said as he opened the door, ‘we are sorry for disturbing you… One of our men was sure he saw you outside before the whole pursuit started. Since it was dark before we started pursuing him, the thief might have crawled into your room without you knowing’, he bent his head to a side, ‘you know what I mean’.
‘So, what are you suggesting?’
‘Were you not outside?’
‘Yes, I was outside’.
‘We will be forced to search your room’
‘No…no…’
‘Yes. Please be diplomatic about it’, he said, and shifted forward,’ you don’t want these guys to go in by force’.
Jerry opened the door wide. ‘Alright, enter but don’t disturb my girlfriend; she is not feeling too well’.
Luckily for Jerry and the lady, she was afraid of being caught that she was shaking really hard. So, the pursuer believed she was sick. They searched everywhere- under the bed, his wardrobe- but found nothing.
‘Let’s go’, the leader commanded, ‘we will surely catch him’.
When they got to the door, the leader turned to Jerry.
‘Mr…?’
‘Jerry’
‘Good… Thanks for allowing us search, and for not preventing us from keeping this community safe from riffraff. Please, we will request that you join us in our community policing. More so, we have not being seeing you in our meetings. The youth meeting, I mean. I hope we will be seeing your face there…’
‘Okay’, Jerry said, gritting his teeth as he was becoming restless and hoped the hefty man would leave before his fear took over.
‘Have a good night rest’.
‘And you too, I hope you find… the thief’.
Sighing heavily as he switched off the light, he waved his hands to indicate that her pursuers were gone. Hitting the floor, he slept like a log until the morning.
Morning? The lady was supposed to leave before the morning came. He rolled and rose hastily to wake her. However, the bed was empty and instead of her, he found a note.
Dear Jerry,
Don’t be surprised I know your name; I heard it from this morning’s ordeal. I can’t thank you enough. You have the kindest heart I’ve ever seen. I am not sure I’ll be able to complete my mission, but I have taken your short with me to remind me of you, and I have planted a kiss on your right cheek to remind you of me always. Thank you.
P.S. I recommend that you watch Jack Ryan, the recruit, it will help you a lot.
