Edodefender:Keep deceiving yourself. Until that man came from Ife, you were unknown entity. Even now, the only achievement you can point to is that obaship he established. You can continue to link him with your ogiso to massage your ego, he brought you the obaship, so forget about your ogiso ekaledarhan no one is willing to continue. If you're in doubt, ask the Oghiamien. |

fatiaforreal:okay tell me the real story.. Remember a bini prince merge all itshekiri as one(a so called Yoruba sub tribe) and still rule over them. Oba of Lagos use to pay used to pay homage to oba. Even when the crowning of ooni they must acknowledge the Benin with praises. You say you founded benin but only the Fulani displaced your afonja dynasty and still rule over it?. Abeg know your history jare, what was Yoruba before oduduwa? Mtchew |

Bbsharon:Do a thorough research before you post on your blog. Oranmiyan did NOT conquer anywhere in Edo State. He was SENT by his father (Oduduwa -/Ekhaladerhan) to take his place on the throne of his forefathers,he was brought to Benin and the Benin's fought for him to take over the throne from the usurper Ogiamen who was the regent. He couldn't bear the pressure and chickened out to look for a more peaceful and docile people to rule over but after impregnating his wife the Queen. |

akdjr:Could you please cite me just one source (even by the Binis themselves) prior to 1978 which contains (in any way, shape, or form) this idea that a certain Bini 'kaladerhan, Imadoduwa, or Izoduwa, etc. is one and the same person as the Yorubas' Oduduwa? You won't find any, and the reason is almost very obvious. The reason you won't find any such account anywhere (even among the Binis) prior to 1978 is simply because this very idea by the Binis emerged for the first time ever during the 1978-9 coronation of Omo N'Oba Erediauwa. [Refer to Archaeology and Language I: Theoretical and Methodological Orientations edited by Roger Blench, Matthew Springs wherein Eboreime 1985 was cited]. This source further notes that "by 1992 another version (of the idea) had taken precedence", citing the then Oba of Benin as quoted in Eweka 1992:2 In fact, this idea was published for the first time ever in 1995 by D. Nabuleleorogie Oronsaye and later popularized by Nowamagbe Omoigui. The most you will find about 'kaladerhan in any Bini source prior to 1978 is that he left Igodomigodo and founded Ughoton where he lived and died. The later twist by the Binis from 1978 onwards (and which is today being spread vigorously by Benin e-warriors) does not gel with the history always known to the Binis from time immemorial. This later account which emerged for the first time in 1978 is an obvious attempt by the then new oba and his allies to help the modern Bini person heave some sigh of relief from the "embarrassment" they feel from their own very wide spread tradition which tells them that a man from another country became their first oba and that the Binis' present polity owes too much to this man and his country Ife. |

Born2Breed:I did. And I saw different views to the story. Especially the dispute between the Yorubas and Benin kingdom of who is more superior or from whom their source originated from. Don't just conclude or assume your view to be correct. What I posted was narrated to me by the guard at the groove also my mom who is also a Yoruba/History scholar narrated same besides other Yoruba scholars too claim same belief. So, I understand fully well the angle you are coming from. |

nice write up,but EWEKA WASN'T THE FIRST OBA TO RULE BENIN,that's a mix up I & the beginning of Oba Era {About 1200AD-1235AD} After the banishment of Owodo; the last Ogiso under the {Ogiso periods} for misrule Evain who had earlier distinguished himslf as a brave man by destroying the man-eating Osogan, was appointed as an adminstrator who ruled Benin for nearly 40 years. At his old age, Evian nominated his son Ogiamien as a successor. Unfortunately, this nomination did not go well with the Edo people who maintained that succession to the the throne is always applicables to kings and not to commoners to which class Evian belonged. Spear headed by Oliha, there was a serious agitation to bring back the monarch. The nation was thrown into a state of internecine war and as a way out the elders {led by Oliha} went on a search party to look for Ikaladerhan {the barnished son of the last Ogiso Owodo} who had for some time taken refure at Uhe {or Ife as is now known}. The seach party reached Uhe to meet Ikaladerhan already enjoying the status of a king. The Edo people could not persuade him to reture home. nevertheless he Ikaladerhan now known as Ododuwa agreed to send his son if only the Benin could take care of him. This is how Ododuwa sent his son Oromiyan to Benin. To test whether the Edo people would care for their king, Ododuwa gave the Edo people three years to nurse the common louse. On their success, the great Ododuwa was convinced that the people really would care for their king. Oromiyan was thereafter sent to Benin in 1170AD.He came into Benin amidst the serious opposition of Ogiamien who refused him entry into the city which was still under the firm grip of his administration. Oromiyan was therefore forced to settle at Usama which was an outskirt of the city State . There he remained under the political support of the elders {Edion} headed by chief Oliha. Oromiyan had both language and cultural handicaps because of his Yoruba backgrounds. Although he had a Benin father {Ikaladerhan} yet he was really born and bred in yoruba land which was then the adopted kingdom, a refugee prince who had now found a new home at Ife. When Oromiyan could neither speak nor understand the Benin custom, Unable to bear the animosity for very long renounced his position and labeled Edo land [Benin kingdom] lle Ibinu meaning land of annoyance and vexation and declared that only a child of the soil educated in the culture and tradition of the land could rule the kingdom. He thereafter returned to Uhe{IIe Ife} On his way back home he stopped briefly at Ego where he pregnated princess Erimwinde the daughter of the Enogie of Ego who bear him a son. In his early years couldn’t talk when his father who by now established the Alafin dynasty in Oyo had of his son predicament, sent his son’s mother Ehendiwo seven marbles. While playing this marbles with other children one of his throws hit the target in excitement screamed Owomika {I have succeeded} which was Corrupted into Eweka. For a period of over 30 years, the administration of Benin City was virtually in the hands of Ogiamien family until 1200 AD when the "Boy-King" Eweka I as a young king ruled the kingdom with the assistance of his maternal grandfather Ogiegor. |

the first dynasty of the Edo or Benin Kingdom was the Ogi-Suo or Ogiso dynasty. The second 'Oba' dynasty was founded by Oranyan (also known as Oranmiyan), a prince from the Yoruba Kingdom of Ife in modern-day Nigeria. His son Eweka I became the first Oba. The present Oba, Erediauwa I, is the 39th Oba of the dynasty. One oral tradition states that during the reign the last Ogiso, his son and heir apparent Ekaladerhan was banished from Benin as a result of one of the Queens changing a message from the oracle to the Ogiso. Prince Ekaladerhan was a powerful warrior and well loved. On leaving Benin he travelled in a westerly direction to the land of the Yoruba. At that time the Ifá oracle said that the Yoruba people of Ile Ife (also known as Ife) will be ruled by a man who would come out of the forest. Following Ekaladerhans arrival at the Yoruba city of Ife also known as Ile Ife, he finally rose to the position of the Oba (meaning "king" or "ruler" Yoruba) and later received the title of Ooni of Ife. He changed his name to 'Izoduwa', (which in his native language Edo language means, "I have chosen the path of prosperity" . The name Izoduwa has been corrupted to Oduduwa, also known as Odudua, Oòdua and Eleduwa, of the Yoruba. On the death of his father, the last Ogiso, a group of Benin Chiefs led by Chief Oliha came to Ife, pleading with Oba (King) Oduduwa to return to Benin to ascend the throne. Oduduwa's reply was that a ruler cannot leave his domain but he had seven sons and would ask one of them to go back to Benin to become the next King.Oranyan (also known as Oranmiyan), one of the sons of Oduduwa and son of Oduduwa's Yoruba wife Okanbi, agreed to go to Benin. He spent some years in Benin before returning Yoruba land before establishing a Yoruba kingdom at Oyo. It is said that he left the place in anger and called it 'Ile Ibinu' (meaning, 'land of annoyance and veexation)and it was this phrase that that became the origin of Benin city's former name 'Ubini'. Oranmiyan, on his way home to Ife, stopped briefly at Ego, where he pregnated Princess Erimwinde, the daughter of the Enogie of Ego and she gave birth to a son named Eweka. During Oba Oramiyan reign as Alaafin of Oyo, Eweka became the oba at Ile Ibinu. Oba Ewedo, an ancestor of Oba Ewaka I, changed the name of the city of Ile Ibinu to Ubini, which the Portuguese, in their own language, corrupted it to Benin or Bini. In 1440, Oba Ewuare[1], also known as 'Ewuare the Great', came to power and turned the city-state into an empire. Around 1470, he named the new state Edo. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the Oba of Benin's power was at its peak and different monarchs of the dynasty controlled significant stretches of land in Africa. During this era, exquisite naturalistic bronze art was created to enhance and embody the power of the Oba. The art often depicted the ancestors in order to establish legitimacy. Formally, only Obas of Benin were allowed to own the famous bronze heads of Benin. [ quote author=TAO11 post=73786034] Could you please cite me just one source (even by the Binis themselves) prior to 1978 which contains (in any way, shape, or form) this idea that a certain Bini 'kaladerhan, Imadoduwa, or Izoduwa, etc. is one and the same person as the Yorubas' Oduduwa? Bbsharon:Its no more a story if its lie conjured by revisionist. Did Oranmiyan fought and conquered Benin? Leave Edo state out of your lies, someone who is only knowledgeable in Yoruba history is not true historian, your knowledge of history must cover every race linked with yours, you carry out proper research. The groove guard and your mother told you one side of the story,her/their story not my or our story. This is not about superiority or ego but the truth. |

Born2Breed:A story means? Besides I never said I told your story. And the "truth" you say here is relative. Very. I read deep research from other great Yoruba scholars that clearly nullify your claims but I won't call yours a lie. Never. It's your story, own it. It's the Yoruba story too they also own theirs and won't give up on what they believe. The fact I choose to tell one part out of both stories was clearly not out of bias but out of opportunity. If I happen to travel to Benin some other time and get a chance to tell their stories also I will gladly do that. You saw the disclaimer at the beginning of the post? A narration I put into writing. This debate and the truth you claim have been in existence between both kingdoms for long and none is giving so I see no reason why I should thereby call any of the party liars. They have decided to hold on to their claims and that's fine. I guess I have said enough. |

akdjr:I did not ask you to simply copy and paste the story here from sources like yourself. I am aware that the story is all over the internet written by every Benin Tom, Dick and Harry without reference to any single early source. What I asked for is that you should provide evidence against my evidence backed claim that the idea is a modern and made up one which emerged for the fist time in 1978. What I requested is clear. I challenged you to cite me ANY early source (even by a Benin author) prior to 1978 which notes that your Ekaladerhan is one and the same person as the Yorubas' Oduduwa. I mentioned that 1978 marks the emergence of this idea popular today among the Binis, and I provided evidence to back up my claim I noted that there are versions of the idea. Even Omo N'Oba Erediauwa contradicted himself on the idea because the version which emerged during his 1978-9 coronation indicates that the first Oba of Benin was the son of Oranmiyan who he obviously implied was himself the son of a certain Ekaladerhan. But in Eweka 1992 he is quoted to have again said that the first Oba of Benin was the youngest son of God himself. What should we believe? The fact that the idea is not found anywhere in any Bini source prior to 1978 obviously shows it to be modern. And the reason why the idea is made up and announced in 1978 is not farfetched. It is intended to serve as a relief from the "embarrassment" that Benin's first Oba was an Ife man. |

Bbsharon:^^^^^ ^^^^^ @Bbsharon Awesome post Demi... I'd love to visit this historic site soon! It's surreal just watching you touching the Oranmiyan staff in Ife that I've only read about in the history books. 1] Did you visit the Oranmiyan staff from Lagos? 2] Is your travel blog geared towards travel tourism... I mean are you gearing up to having a Tour Guide Company from your travel blogging experience? Last but not least, I think the place needs to be modernised/renovated with chalets and more so as to attract more local and international tourists. The current Ooni owns a real estate firm and I think they can do some re-modelling on this site without losing the original history of the place. Olu317 will be interested in this post and your Travel blog. Cheers! PS:OK Demi... I just left a message on your blog on the Esa cave visit here: https://www.demitalks.com/2019/02/01/my-visit-to-the-ancient-esa-cave-iyin-ekiti/

Konquest:@ Konquest ,greeting to you but I am not interested at all because people have refused to be rational thinkers and studious but preferred to be stereotype on a fabled information that's watery. The Opa Oranmiyan and every other obelisk in Yoruba land are coded information on these granite which were erected to identify with their ancestors history's writing form. The purpose of these obelisks, visual Art ,ceramic works,Terracota works, genealogy account are a pointer to the fact that one day these Yoruba ancestors codes can be decoded by their descendants who are you and I in unraveling their identity. After all, yoruba history has flaws, because genealogy became norm of the day from Oshin-A..k. A (Odudua). This is as simple as ABC Cheers |

Olu317:^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ Great to hear from you Olu317! I hope you're doing fine? Thanks for the feedback to my post. As for the coded information on the Obelisks in Yorubaland, I guess just like the Egyptian hieroglyphics or pictorial writings were decoded by Egyptologists within the last 200 years from the Egyptian Obelisks and the great pyramids, from which the very popular Rosetta Stone was found, Ifa divination can be used to help in deciphering these things on the Obelisks in Ife and elsewhere. I read a couple of years back about Prof. Wande Abimbola, Chief Elebuibon and the strong presence of the Yoruba religion in Cuba, Brazil, etc, and how Ifa Divination can be used to unravel known mysteries by Ifa priests. I have been a lover of global history right from before highschool... and Yoruba history is one of them! All the best! |

Sharon, Oranmiyan did not fight any war in Edo. It is not in any of our Chronicles in Edo. It was a peaceful coming, even requested by Edo people. Such abound in history. George I of England was brought from Germany (being partly related to the Stuart Dynasty of England) through his mother Electress Sophia of Hanover. In fact the palace of the Duke's daughter he married in Egor (a village then but now a Benin-City quarter) is still there with Ogiegor direct line Duke still in that palace. Otherwise very good posts on travel generally. You can try travel-blogging. |

AreaFada2:Travel Blogging...Thstd what I do. And about your view...I quite understand your point. That's the Edo part of it and I don't dispute it. I stated clearly I narrated the Yoruba part specifically from the Tour Guide at the centre. |

. Oduduwa's reply was that a ruler cannot leave his domain but he had seven sons and would ask one of them to go back to Benin to become the next King.
