Enny must be in the bedroom. I went straight there. She sat, or rather, huddled, on the bed. A look at her face showed that something grievous had happened. I stopped short.

'Oh my God, Enny darling, what happened?'

Her face looked like she had been crying. What could have happened? Before I left a couple of hours ago, all was well. I sat on the bed by her side and held her hands.

'Enny darling, what is wrong?'

'What did you discuss with your mother-in-law?' she asked.

'What mother-in-law? I went to meet Madam B. Have you forgotten?'

'Is she not your mother-in-law? Didn't you go there to discuss how you will travel to America so that you and Steph can have more babies?'

'What?' I became stiff. 'Enny, what, what're you talking about?'

'You know what I'm talking about. How could you do this to me? How could you impregnate Steph and be deceiving me all this while?'

I opened my mouth. How did Enny get to know? Who told her? I left her hands and stood up. My hands shook while my knees buckled.
Suddenly, I felt feverish.

'Steph called me to say she had a baby boy for you. Why did you bother to marry me? Why didn't you just go ahead and marry her?'

She broke into tears again. That very moment, I felt so sad.

'Enny, please I'm so sorry. It was not my intention to marry her or get her impregnated. It was all a mistake. I'm so sorry. Please, I'm very sorry.'

'And you didn't tell me all this while. How could you treat me like that.? How could you?'

I moved to her and went on my knees. She covered her face with her hands.

'I'm sorry,' I went on. 'At this point, let me tell you the truth. I was actually suspended from work by madam over this issue. There was
nothing like any misappropriation of funds.'

She looked at me sadly and shook her head. 'You're such a liar, Alex. God, I can't believe you could do all these. How many other lies are
you going to confess?'

I was very ashamed of myself. 'No more lies, Enny.'

She suddenly wiped the tears off her face, picked a pillow and stood up.

'Where're you going?' I asked.

'Away from you and your lies!' She left the bedroom. I stood up and followed her. She went to the second bedroom where Deola was
staying.

'Enny, I said I'm sorry.' She didn't say anything. The door of the room was slammed to my face and bolted from inside. I sighed and went
back to our bedroom. There you are, a voice told me, you're finally reaping what you have sown.

I sat on the bed in dejection. I wasn't surprised that Enny was taking the matter this way. I had always dreaded this moment. I thought
over the issue again. Perhaps, Steph had told Enny since she realized that I couldn't bring myself to doing it.

But, what kind of coincidence was that? Why was it the time madam called me over to her place that Steph chose to reveal the affair to
Enny? I wasn't happy with Steph. She shouldn't have done that. It looked more like she was wifully doing things to wreck my marriage.

But, what kind of coincidence was that? Why was it the time madam called me over to her place that Steph chose to reveal the affair to
Enny? I wasn't happy with Steph. She shouldn't have done that. It looked more like she was wilfully doing things to wreck my marriage. If she believed what she had just done would make me to abandon my wife and run into her waiting hands, then she was making a big mistake.

I lay down on the bed, a disturbed man. I would have to plead with Enny more. I would have to try to convince her that such a mistake would never repeat itself again. Now, I decided I had been too weak with Steph. This was the time to severe my cozy relationship with her. She remained the mother of my baby but, just like her mother said, there should be no further lovey-lovey talk or relationship.

Two hours later, I was still lying on the bed, staring at nothing. I would give Enny some time to calm down before I would talk with her again. I would probably have to give her till the following evening before talking with her.

My phone rang. It was Madam B on the line again. ‘Hello, madam.’

‘Hello, Alex. You’re to resume work tomorrow.’

‘Ah, thank you, ma’am. God bless you, ma’am.’

The line was dead. I got up from the bed and knelt down to give thanks to God. After that, I went to the bedroom Enny was staying to
break the news to her. I had to knock hard before the door was opened. It was Deola that opened the door. The room was in darkness.

‘I’m sorry, uncle Alex, sister Eniola doesn’t wish to see you now,’ Deola said.

‘Yes, I understand.’ I spoke loud: ‘Listen Enny, madam just called now that I should resume work tomorrow.’

I turned to Deola. ‘In case she didn’t hear me, tell her I’m resuming work tomorrow.’

‘Okay, uncle.’

I went back to the main bedroom. Wow, so I would be returning to work the following day! That was good news. The bad news was Enny
was still mightily angry at me.

The following morning, Enny refused to see me. She even sent her sister to come and pick the clothes she would be wearing to her work
place from our wardrobe. She also refused my ‘lift’. I drove to work and got there by quarter to eight. Mandy soon came to my office.

‘Aren’t you so lucky, Alex? You only spent few days of suspension and madam called you back. I know another member of staff that was
suspended and it took months before he was recalled. You’re lucky, Alex.’

‘Yes, I’m lucky,’ I replied. She handed over all the files I had handed to her plus some new files.

‘Madam called me this morning that I should hand over all these files to you, and you’re to start working on them immediately.’

I nodded and took the files from her. I soon started to work. Not very long after I got to the office, Madam B came. I went to meet her. I
prostrated to thank her for lifting the indefinite suspension she slammed on me so soon.

‘It’s okay, Alex. The important thing is that you must learn. Learn not to be carried away by overtures from women. Learn that now that
you’re married, you must be faithful to your wife.’

‘I’m learning, ma’am.’

‘Good. Sit down.’

I took a seat opposite her.

‘I’ll be traveling to the U.S before the end of this week. There’s no problem concerning my health issue. I’ll be traveling to tie some loose
ends over there. Make sure the office continues to run efficiently while I’m away.’

‘No problem, ma’am. I’ll put in my best.’

I went back to my office and continued my work. I had a lot to do, so I was still at work by five thirty. I decided to call Enny to inform her
that I would be coming home a bit late. Her phone rang on and on, but she did not pick it.

I went back to my office and continued my work. I had a lot to do, so I was still at work by five thirty. I decided to call Enny to inform her that I would be coming home a bit late. Her phone rang on and on, but she did not pick it.

When it was six o’clock, I decided to call it a day. The traffic had built up, so I wasn’t able to get home on time. It was dusk when I parked the car in our compound. I noticed that our apartment was in the darkness as no light was put on. Could that mean Enny too had not come back. I opened the sitting-room door and switched on the light. The first thing that caught my attention was the note left on the glass center table.

I moved towards it and read.

I have decided to go so that you will be free to marry your darling Steph. I’m with my parents. Don’t bother about me. Enny.

What! I could not contain my astonishment. What was this? How could Enny leave just like that? Were we not married for better or for worse? No wonder, she had refused to pick my call. I called her number again, but she would not pick it. I then decided to call her mother.

‘Ah, good evening, ma,’ I greeted as soon as she answered the call.

‘Good evening, Alex.’

‘Yes, ma. First, I want to confirm if my wife is there. I mean she’s not in my house.’

‘Yes, she’s here.’

‘Please, ma, tell her I’ve been calling her number and she should pick her call. Please.’

There was a slight pause. ‘Okay, Alex.’

‘Thank you, ma. Good night.’

‘Good night.’

I called Enny’s number again, and just when I thought she would not pick it, she did.

‘Oh, thank goodness. Enny, my darling, why did you have to leave the house?’

‘Don’t darling me,’ she blurted out.

Before I could say anything further, she cut the line.

Enny should calm down and understand pls that the deed has been done and it was before they got married, if Alex had wanted then, he would've married Steph who had more than enough to keep any man, but he didn't. Alex chose to marry Enny because he loves her truly.
