TroublemakerPro:May you not waste the credit you've been called with! At the emboldened, it's good to see you're following a career path that would benefit you a lot. You'd learn quite a lot being that you're in the UK, I'd say you probably get closer to some of the students who might have been coding. Some of them have been coding since they were young, once met an 18 yo boy who has been coding since 13. Meet up with them, see how you can get better so that once you get into college, it becomes easier for you. However, no school will teach you hacking lol, at least not in the context we know hacking as. Don't raise your expectations but you'd be grateful for the chance to learn topics like algorithms and data structures, compiler construction, etc in a more quality way. I know you're not in college now, I'd advice you start working towards a top school in the UK. You could check for some online, they have a higher acceptance rate compared to Stanford (4.9%) and other top US schools for CS. Kindly do your research well and make us proud here in Nigeria. To round off, there are more companies that should be willing to offer you internships, you could check out some companies and see their requirements. If it's the summer internship, it's good. I'm not sure if they accept high school guys but you should give these internships a shot. It'd give a higher propulsion into the programming world generally. Go bro, make us proud! 10 Likes |

Olalekank:Yeah they should have summer internships for high school students. At least I'm sure of goldman sachs in the UK. Even 3 of my friends here in Unilag from computer engineering and science got 3 months internship placement in Goldman Sachs, London. The opportunity of getting internships is one I wish I had in my 400l. Well make the best use of the opportunity you have now to be the best. |

[quote author=TroublemakerPro post=74615868]Now my observation on my schoolmate Ive been in your shoes , My Advice for you is : Do not listen to your teacher, know your passion from now. In the uk this stage is like the most crucial stage in your life. It will make or break you. Forget that 98% you got . Once you start proper alevels then youl see fierce intense competition. If you think white people are dumb. Wait till you start taking math physics and chemistry alevels. Alevels are HARD. DO NOT underestimate it . I repeat DONT. If it was easy then you wont see them dropping out of school to do plumbing. The best of the best make it to university (good courses anyway). "Read your books" sounds very cliche , youve heard it a million times right? Well This is the time to READ like your life depends on it. Read daily. Since youre a science student Solve maths and physics textbook questions and past questions everyday . Your school will provide lots of resources for you. Never leave things till last minute. Hit the ground running. Unlike nigeria your teachers LOVE to teach. If you dont understand , ask them when theyl be free to help you. If you answer past questions and cant solve some , go to them theyl be glad to put you through. DO NOT get carried away. Its very easy to get carried away there. Youre given the best education and resources and youre also given lots of distractions. Unlimited fast internet, 24/7 light, yummy food, easy convenient comfy life .e.t.c . Choose to not to get distracted, dont spend hours unending on instagram, snapchat, twitter. Make friends with the smartest , focused people in your class. When the time comes youl be able to differentiate them . Join study groups. Join clubs. E.g if you want to study engineering join engineering clubs thatl prepare you for uni. Be that oversabi student. Yes it pays there. When youre applying for uni youl know what im talking about. Universities dont just want smart. There are lots of smart. They want an all rounder. Also they want proof that you have a passion for that course youre applying for. E.g if you want to study medicine. Apart from all As or A* in your subjects. You have to have done something to show you have interest in that course for like a year. E.g following a doctor or other health professionals (shadowing) for a year. Lastly youtube is your best friend. Any topic is there. Itl help you understand most topics better. Lastly go for engineering. Medicine is extremely competitive in the u.k. except youre A*A*A* / AAA smart. Plus the sacrifice of volunteering shadowing and all. A Word is enough for the wise. 21 Likes |

This is a beautiful thread. I think the Troublemakerpro has been given a mouth-watering opportunity and from my view, I don't think he's the bad type (he might just sound that way to attract flies).... But don't take my word for it, I'm just 16 Do enjoy the UK bro, let the rest of us decide where and how to enjoy the rest of our lives! 4 Likes |

stealthtiger: I didn't know High Schoolers had that opportunity... But uni huh. I'll be attending a federal university as well once the strike is called off, do you think this kinda internships are available in all or just a select few? Also, do you have any materials regarding this? I'd like to go through them. Thanks! |

voraz:Yeah , but thats for High schoolers resding in the UK or other eligible countries. The Goldman Sachs summer internship is available to all Universities in Nigeria and Ghana. It's just all about your capability to pass the online test and interview then you're good to go. Students from Unilag most especially then Covenant, OAU have participated in the internships. But it's open to everyone. For the Software analyst position you'll take the test either in Math or by Solving a programning question on Hackerrank. It's highly advised to solve lots of coding problems on Hackerrank because they get questions from there. So start studying their math and coding quiz on Hackerrank.com. But in the test you're allowed to choose either math or programning. Their math questions are usually university level calculus, college algebra, number theory, probability and statistical distribution, discrete math, trigonometry. So start preparing because it's highly competitive. There are cowbell math champions that participate in the test to get a slot. I personally know one that went to UK for the GS internship last year. But you can triumph over all if you put in quality preparation from now. Good luck. 6 Likes |

voraz:Hey there, I don't know the possibilities of getting internships in Benin as you stated but you if you reside in Lagos, you can apply to some during holiday breaks. Start learning how to cold mail companies you might be interested in, you land some and you don't land some. I have a friend who got internship through this means. Another strong recommendation is for you to start preparation for foreign tech companies early by going to Hackerrank.com to learn how to solve problems programmatically, read up on running time and how to optimize your algorithms. I applied for GS internship this year and we had to take an online test on Hackerank. As for the pay, you'd be paid armed robber salary. The two guys in my department who went to London can testify to this. Strive to get it! You think you might have time but there's little time. Good luck man, don't forget to get active on Twitter and follow the right people to know when internship opportunities pop up. 4 Likes |

Re: I'm Traveling To London, Follow Me On My Journey..... by Olalekank(m): 8:01pm On Jan 23, 2019 |
Dboy55:It's cool, start working on something, work on a couple of projects, say 2 or 3 probably before the end of first year. By doing this, you have a high chance of getting internships, there'd be postings on Twitter for interns from time to time. Follow the right people and make the right connections, connections that you can always talk to when you need an internship. |

stealthtiger: I'm not after the money (no matter how mouth-watering it is ) although it's a nice benefit.... But the knowledge gained from such an experience is unquantifiable. Take the Bloom Initiative for example.... T'was a beautiful programme I attended about 2 years ago. I'm pretty sure all I learnt can't be bought! Thanks again. |

Olalekank: I reside in Lagos but will be schooling in Benin. So the internship applications won't be a problem, right? And 'cold mailing', I don't understand what this means... Could you shed some light on it? The money will be an added benefit sir Twitter huh... Thanks again! |
Re: I'm Traveling To London, Follow Me On My Journey..... by Olalekank(m): 8:43pm On Jan 23, 2019 |
voraz:Cold mailing - sending a mail to the company letting them know of your intent to intern with them. They don't necessarily have to post their job openings before you send your CV. You send your CV to them and if you're lucky, they call you for an interview. Build your skills, work on a few projects - big or small and getting an internship shouldn't be difficult. |
