Army confirms loss of personnel, equipment in Yobe Attacks

Adeyinka Akintunde Adeyinka Akintunde

The Nigerian Army on Saturday confirmed that it lost vehicles, personnel and equipment to the recent Boko Haram terrorists’ attacks in Geidam, Yobe State.

It however asserted that troops of 159 Battalion responded to the attacks with a show of gallantry leading to the routing of the insurgents in the area.

The insurgents, according to a statement by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations in charge of Sector Two, Lt. Njoka Irabor, took advantage of the market day in Geidam to loot foodstuffs.

Lt Irabor said the troops handled the situation with professional acumen to prevent civilian casualties for which they were commended by the Acting Commander of the sector, Brig General Mohammed Dala.

Lt Irabor said :”Troops of 159 Battalion deployed in Sector 2 of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in Geidam , Yobe state, have been lauded for their display of gallantry at containing Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT), who infiltrated the serene town of Geidam on Wednesday, 23rd January 2019, at about 5:30pm, shooting sporadically, thereby creating panic and causing unnecessary apprehension.

” The Acting Commander Sector 2, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Brigadier General Mohammed Dala, gave the commendation today, during an on the spot assessment visit to Geidam.

“He commended the troops for their gallantry and deliberate effort in protecting the civil populace in the town, particularly at the Geidam market.

“He directed the immediate replenishment of the troops’ supplies, assuring them that issues of their welfare will always be a top priority.

“The BHTs, who came to loot foodstuffs and other items, took advantage of the market day in Geidam to infiltrate the town and attacked the military base.

“The troops displayed a high sense of professionalism by discretely engaging the terrorists with less sophisticated weapons in order to minimize collateral damage with the attendant civilian casualties.

“Sadly however, the troops, in the process suffered some casualties in vehicles, equipment and personnel.

“The Sector Commander seized the opportunity to pay a visit to the Emir of Geidam and afterwards had a meeting with officials of other security agencies, where he sued for their cooperation and synergy in sharing timely information that would enhance the pro-activeness of troops.

“He further reassured them, that troops will continue to carry out aggressive patrols and offensives to deny Boko Haram and other criminal elements freedom of action.

“He further urged the good people of Geidam and Yobe state in general, to go about their lawful businesses, as the troops are committed to the protection of lives and property, as well as working round the clock to forestall any attempt by groups or individuals to cause breakdown of law and order in the state.

“The Commander however warned that anyone identified as a BHT collaborator will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law".

grin

I suggest you read up on them. Either way, You call the Piranha old tech because of the year it was pressed into service or its role? Whichever it is, it doesn't fly.

The Piranha is an APC and not an IFV. There is a basic doctrinal usage of these classes of vehicles that you're not privy to because you prefer "history" lessons
An APC basically carries infantry protected from light caliber weapons to the objective wherein the troops debus and commence their business. It is basically a battle taxi

You see I couldn't help but be amused when you were all... probably you're thinking of an IFV

The Piranha is used in the same role a M113 APC (1960 tech tongue is used). Oh, and before you start asking "who uses it" you can check out what Turkey uses most

Again
You can tell whatever British thing you're talking of to teenage girls grin

Hmmmmmmmmm you have not addressed the question and or the central theme of this particular discourse. Let me remind you so hopefully you will not deviate again.

We are talking the specific attributes of the old 1970 tech. of the Piranha 1,2 and Grizzly 6x6 that's the discussion.

And if this literally museum piece is fit for purpose. Considering who our current enemy is and what alternatives more effective platforms are available today.

My purpose is to inform not to debate, there is nothing to prove or points to score soldiers are dying because of inadequate equipment and you are talking cultural dynamics of the Nigerian military in organizational management and definition.

What's "tech" in an APC
Just look at yourself at the bolded comments.

Am I the one asking for precision weaponry or you?
Do you know what an APC is or what its role is to Motorized Infantry?

If the Piranha answers Yes to these questions;
1) Does it provide protection from Light caliber weapons?
2) Is it inexpensive to operate and maintain?
3) Is it deployed in its roles?
then what are you arguing about? Just date? If so can you tell me why M113 APCs are still in existence and front line in western armies?

There aren't much vehicles that can withstand 12.7/14.5mm rounds or RPGs. And those that can are IFVs. IFVs are for Mechanized Infantry and nor Army on earth is an all Mechanized Infantry force.

Every other thing else is from your imagination

Odd how any new military facilities are always built in the North. Looks like an extreme case of marginalization to me.

I guess Bauchi plant is repairs and this is manufacture, I stopped trying to make sense of NA decision long time ago, the latest rumor on twitter now is that Boko boys captured a SHORAD Sam system.

The source is usually reliable but this time his story sound more like fiction to me.

I can't see what they are manufacturing here (save the IPV which can be done in Bauchi).

I saw the stuff about the SAMs, that's just hokum.

In order to rid the North East of insurgency and sustain the tempo of operations in the region, the recently established Nigerian Army Vehicle Manufacturing Company has refurbished some Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) to support Op LAFIYA DOLE.

Some of the newly refurbished AFVs of both wheeled and tracked variants, are fully fitted with advanced communications equipment, gun mounds and sophisticated weapon systems.

These AFVs would serve as force multipliers and overall game changers in the theatre of operations. Watch the clips below.

He's not always spot on as he's human and has been corrected about some claims/Intel a good number of times.

Asides that, never let critical reasoning become a casualty. Rolands are not staged anywhere in Biu, Borno nor is there any equipment like "MRAD with a range of 30km" like he claimed in any WA Army
