Here's my take on the issue. As long as the lady is question hasn't been whoring around, then she is worth it.

Problem is, people take advantage of it to squeeze as much as they can from the bridegroom, which to me is a total NO NO.

You have to give it up to the developed countries though. Aint nobody got time for that shit. Paying huge bride price doesn't

necessary guarantee that the woman will stay with you forever. Africans, especially Nigerians just like to take advantage of

tradition when its best suits them. angry angry angry angry

Erm, can I ask how much your bride price is, Ishi? wink cheesy
My dear in my side bride price is 10k and the items in the list is roughly about 90k (and even this is negotiable). Shikena. You don't need to sell off your father's properties to marry a woman in Delta State.

What is happening these days is daylight robbery. It's nauseating

Online aproko outlets claim this happened in Enugu, others swear it is Imo.cheesy

Regardless of where this happened, the lines between tradition and downright extortion is blurred in many cases.

Let me do a quick inventory-

A big nanny goat
2 trays of Nittol detergent
A basin of coconut
Three suitcases of Hollandis wrappers and assorted wax prints
One bag of rice
Two crates of drinks
One crate of beer

Is that a salon size pack of Profectiv Mega Growth relaxer i see there...??

Yep it is. I wonder when hair relaxer became a part of omenala. (tradition)

Emm, I sight giant can of peak milk
Something that looks like custard
A basin of big sized Canoe bar soap

I can't keep up. My eyes are aching and I'm tired of squinting. embarassed

So what happens to the struggling man who can't afford these cutthroat lists?
To be honest, a man who truly love his wife and is hard working will never complain. If a woman I want to marry is worth it, I will do as much as it is needed. I will never complain.

The man that paid such dowry is a mumu.

Other men have bleeped this same woman for bottle of Maltina and meat pie or Sharwama and moved on.

Good luck to the “husband”

What nonsense?

Nobody begged you to come marry.

In India, women pay dowry while In some parts of Nigeria, a man must show the strength of his arm financially before he can marry a woman.
Different strokes for different folks.

It used to be barns of yams in the olden days as depicted in Chinua Achebe "things fall apart" and has now modernized to other material things.

What ever works. AS LONG AS FAILED MEN ARE WEEDED OUT.

If in your place, they give out women two for five naira, all well and good.
Your sense of good is not universal.
Lol.
500k can comfortably buy the items I am seeing on the picture. Please if can not raise 500k to marry, leave their daughter alone, if is 250k you have, negotiate with your in-laws, bride price is not stamp duty, is has a fixed price but you must not pay everything at once. I think the people that complain about bride price are the unmarried dudes whom are seeing bride price as a huge mountain. BRACE UP AND PAY.

Not a fan of expensive bride prices but wait, what is the cost of educating that lady you intend to marry for just a semester nowadays? Compare it to bride price and thank your stars.
We went to marry in Zulu land and the bride price was 40 cows because the gal was a graduate and has got no child out of wedlock. I am
Sure the stuff I saw there isn’t up to 5 cows so make Una just chill

1 million naira for a wedding is not a waste.
It is a waste oga,Nigerians like to show off hence why people that do not have up to 300 thousand in their account would borrow money just to have a fancy wedding that is just for one day.
I would rather use my money for something meaningful than waste up to 200 thousand on a one day event.

In the south east in particular. There the parents engage the in-laws on bargaining how they are selling their daughters in the name marriage.

Is marriage not an investment? Please tell the investment that is bigger than marriage. Even the Bible say he find a wife find a good thing and is blessed.
Any investment that brings out good money is profitable.

Marriage is not an investment. So also I am not a Christian no need bringing up a book in the conversation.

What about the white Wedding that average Nigerian spend more than 1m so Mr investor what are we going to call that one...
Forget we are Africans so we have a tradition and culture we practice be it western African or Eastern or southern or Northern African we all have our different tradition, culture and believes.
White wedding and any other type of wedding including traditional wedding is a waste if it cost so much.It is just a one day event why waste such money that brings out no profit.
Also oga I would love to hear this usual talk of we are Africans the day this continent decides to move forward and science and technology is our main stay. Not this trash of it is our culture.
Cultures that are archaic and static that have refused to be dynamic and change to meet current world realities. If it is the archaic African culture that you are preaching to me.Please spare me the crap. And note that culture changes.

thank you ooo. I see it as poverty alleviation scheme. If the man is rich and wish to do unthinkable, cool. Buh imposing? nah. More like trade by batter. You bring what you have in exchange for what you need just like you've rightly said. This is even not what you have, cuz at the end they'd end up sweating to get what the other party needs to give them what they need/want. Rubbish. Total rubbish in the name of culture.
Thank you.
