Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has reacted to the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at the February 23 presidential election.

The aggrieved former Vice President says the election was not free and fair.

He says there “were manifest and premeditated” malpractices in many states which negate the results announced.

Atiku said he will seek justice the democratic way by heading to court.

Below is his full statement.

“Democracy Will Not Be Emasculated in Nigeria

I thank the Nigerian people who trooped out in their millions to perform their civic duty this past Saturday. The patriotism of Nigerians is heartwarming and affirms my oft-repeated statement that we are brothers and sisters born from the womb of one mother Nigeria.

With regards to the Presidential elections that took place on February 23, 2019, it is clear that there were manifest and premeditated malpractices in many states which negate the results announced.



Another glaring anomaly is the disruption of voting in strongholds of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos, Akwa-Ibom, Rivers and diverse other states, with the authorities doing little or nothing and in some cases facilitating these unfortunate situations. (See attached links to documentary evidences).

The militarization of the electoral process is a disservice to our democracy and a throwback to the jackboot era of military dictatorship. In some areas of the country, such as, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Imo states, troops deployed for the elections turned their guns on the very citizens they were meant to protect. This is condemnable and should not be associated with our electoral process in the future.

I am a democrat and there are democratic avenues available to present the truth to the nation and the watching world. Already, many international observers have given their verdicts, which corroborate our observations. I am sure more will come in the coming hours and days.

If I had lost in a free and fair election, I would have called the victor within seconds of my being aware of his victory to offer not just my congratulations, but my services to help unite Nigeria by being a bridge between the North and the South.

However, in my democratic struggles for the past three decades, I have never seen our democracy so debased as it was on Saturday, February 23, 2019. 2007 was a challenge, but President Yar’Adua was remorseful. In 2019, it is sad to see those who trampled on democracy thumping their noses down on the Nigerian people.

Consequently, I hereby reject the result of the February 23, 2019 sham election and will be challenging it in court.

I want to assure my supporters and the entire Nigerian people that together, we will not allow democracy to be emasculated.

The INEC chairman quietly told him to submit his letter at INECs office. No one was interested in his funny take-our-letter drama. Yakubu firmly reminded everyone that Atiku's agents signed the results in Borno and Yobe and Adamawa.

And that brings me to it.

Atiku is supposed to be a Fulani man from Jada, Adamawa, North East Nigeria. His not from the southeast. He is not an Igbo man being victimised by a northern rigging machinery.

The results are eloquent. He was rejected by his kinsmen.

No one is fighting for Atiku in Jada or Adamawa. No one in Adamawa is complaining of card reader issues.

But my brothers from Biafra are banging their heads on the wall swearing that Atiku was cheated in his village.

Wike and Secondus all turned out eye bulging figures from their villages. They are now talking about Atiku as if he were a vulnerable child being exploited by adults.

If Atiku was cheated in a state where he employs half of the state's workforce and no one there has raised a murmur , then something fundamental is amiss.

The truth is that Atiku is not a man of his people.

Let those crying for him respect the wishes of his people. whatever it is let those who have small businesses in Ariaria concentrate on what happened in Aba.

Atiku knows his people. And his people know him.

Akpabio couldn't win in Akwa Ibom. Ajumobi couldn't win in Oyo. So there is nothing spectacular about Atiku who has never really won anything in the northeast in the last 12 years losing woefully there.

Look mister. There has never been a credible election in Nigeria as per international best practices. If the judiciary had pronouced the President of Nigeria since 1999 in the true spirit of justice we will not be having a democracy by now but either military rule or pure anarchy. The electoral process as inadequate as it is for now must be allowed to be the only basis for appointing or removing the top leadership. When the electoral process becomes institutionalised then the Judiciary can come in to support it.

It is the truncating of nascent political processes that brought in the military first in 66 and then in 83. If you continue to threaten the system before it matures you will never have long term development. The Judiciary should take it easy. They are the last card. There are many options to straighten out the system before the courts.

If Mr. Buhari had won in the courts in 2007 or 2011 before the maturing of his political base or the electoral system do you think the incumbents then will have willingly reliquished power to him without plunging Nigeria into a chaos that will have brought military rule back.? Right now there are a few more important things than who is President of Nigeria namely internal security, stability and peace.

And the options are clear and were available before the elections that the PDP failed to capitalise on namely the Bill on Electoral Reforms which Mr. President refused to sign into law. That is where the election were lost. The opposition Democratic lawmakers today in America will fight and hold their President to a standstill. In Nigeria, the weak PDP couldn't effect a change of laws in its favour. You cannot do it for yourself, you want some other entity to do it for you. That is anarchy.

They should forget about the courts and mature their ranks brfore taking on the system. They still are not ready to take power.

Things may not be the way they appear. PMB might have the Acting CJN as his Ally but make no mistake, he is just one judge among the 7 to decide the case at supreme Court......after all the appeal court and the tribunals have done their jobs. Also, we need to bear in mind that cases are decided on facts and evidence and sound lawyers. I agree you can add " favour" from the judges but we all know what such favour is doing to some judges right now. Don't get it mixed up,Atiku has a right and he should pursue it. As for him spending more money, if you are a true Democrat, you would support him with your resources; money and time. I commend his approach and wish him well. Let it be on record that he contested against INEC, the Police, Thugs, Army and all military structures that aided any kind of malpractice. Let's find out if he is contesting against the judiciary as well.....we can only wait.
