‘Madam, thanks for all the efforts you’re making. But I think the best thing is for us to stop the relationship. Let’s stop it, ma.’

‘I understand your fear,’ she said. ‘But calm down. Don’t panic.’

I shook my head. I decided that no matter what she said, I would not be dissuaded.

‘Just calm down. I’ll be calling you to let you know the development. Meanwhile, I’ve given Tinu some cash and have ordered her to transfer some money to you from her personal account.’

‘Thank you, ma.’

‘Aright, see you.’

‘Good bye, ma.’

About an hour after I spoke with madam, I received a text alert that one hundred thousand naira had been transferred to my account, as promised by B.M. Now, I believed that the same way madam was using Tinu to do some clandestine things is the way some other people were using Tinu.

When I got home (I had now decided that Naomi’s residence would be my temporary home), I told Naomi everything Big Mummy said and the money she transferred to my account through Tinu.

‘Why is she acting as if she’s desperate about having an affair with you?’ Naomi asked.

‘I wonder o,’ I replied. ‘Despite all I’ve told her, she doesn’t want to let me go. My life is at risk, but she still wants to hold on to me. I believe
some people are monitoring me in that office. I don’t feel safe working there again.’

She nodded. ‘Indeed, some people are monitoring you.’

‘Between the two of us, can you tell me who hinted you about my affairs with B.M?’

Naomi smiled wanly. ‘There’s a problem there. The person made me promise not to reveal her name.’

Her name! I got the message already.

I sighed. ‘Honestly I want to walk away from B.M and anything relating to her. I don’t want to work with her company again, money or no money.’

Again Naomi nodded. ‘You’re quite right. As long as you continue to work close to her and she continues to see you, it won’t be easy to break the link between the two of you.’

I was deep in thought and was trying to make far-reaching decisions.

‘I would have to go back to the bakery,’ I blurted out. ‘Tomorrow morning, I will go to that office and drop my letter of resignation. That will close the chapter of my relationship with Big Mummy.’

Naomi perfectly agreed with me. ‘I still find it difficult to believe that Big Mummy would descend so low as to be having an affair with you,’ she said.

I sighed. ‘Well, that’s a bygone issue, now. I’ll call my uncle to tell him I want to come back to the bakery, what d’you say to that?’

‘It’s okay. Who knows, you can still get a job at the national oil company. My contacts are still making promises. For now, I think you should completely cut off all links with Big Mummy.’

I nodded. The following day, as soon as I got to the office, I wrote my resignation letter. I thanked the management for the opportunity given to me. I said since I was still under probation, I would not need to give a month notice for the resignation, and it was with immediate effect. I was reading the letter again trying to be sure it was well written when my phone rang. It was another unknown number. Could it be Big Mummy calling again, I wondered. I quickly folded the letter and put it in a white envelope. Then I picked my call.

‘Hello, good morning,’ I said.

‘Good morning. Is that Ola?’ It was a man’s voice. I became alert.

‘Who’s on the line, please?’

‘I’m Peter, Rose’s husband. That is, I’m Engineer Udoh.’




I was shocked madam’s husband was calling me. What did he want? ‘Good morning, sir,’ I greeted.

‘I got your number from Tinu, the Secretary. Earlier, Rose told me you were attacked and I was the one responsible. She threatened that if anything should happen to you, she would hold me responsible. I want to say here, categorically, that all her accusations were basely. It is true we had issues in our marriage, but I’ve since moved on. I have a lovely and loving wife now. If Rose wants a divorce, as she is threatening now, she’s free to get it.’

I listened raptly. This was serious.

The man continued: ‘If she also wants to marry a much younger man, she’s free to do so. Whatever she does is her business. I just want you to know that you’re free to marry her. I have nothing against you, young man.’

I could not believe my ears. So, that matter on marriage that Big Mummy mentioned and I thought she was just pulling my legs, she was serious like this! Oh God!

‘I do not have any such intention, sir,’ I quickly said.

‘Even if you do, it’s your business. Good luck.’

And he cut off the line. This was indeed serious. So, B.M was actually thinking of settling down with me in marriage. That was crazy! And the man was calling me that he had no hand in my attack and that I should go ahead with B.M! All these were crazy!

I was now more convinced that I should call it quit with madam. I was beginning to think that I was becoming batty hearing all these.

I went to B.M’s office.

‘She’s around,’ Tinu said. ‘Let me tell her you want to see her.’

But I would rather not see her. ‘I just want to give her this letter,’ I said, handing the white envelope to Tinu.

I left the place, went back to my office, quickly and packed my few things in my bag. My phone rang. It was B.M’s number. I decided to ignore it for now. I wanted to be out of that company’s premises as soon as possible. I slung my bag across my shoulders and left the office. Mr. Ette had gone to the depot. I decided to call him later to let him know that I had resigned.

As I moved towards the gate, Mike, the head of the security approached me.

‘Oga madam is demanding that you should come and see her,’ he said.

‘Oga madam?’

‘Yes. Madam, the boss. She wants to see you right away.’

I had no option that to go back to the building and go to the first floor. Tinu ushered me to madam’s office immediately.

‘Good morning, madam,’ I greeted.

‘Good morning, Ola. Please, sit down.’

I sat down alone with her in the cool office.

She stared at me. ‘I have seen your letter of resignation,’ she started. ‘Let me say you don’t have any reason to take a panic measure. I’m on
top of the situation. The worst is over, Ola.’

I looked at everywhere but her face.

She smiled. ‘You’re just like Dave, my son. The way you react. I can’t blame you. Look, I’ve confronted Peter – that’s my husband - about the
attack on you, and he confirmed he was the one behind it. He said he only wanted to use that to scare you off. I’ve told him I’m going ahead with the divorce and nothing bad must happen to you again. He has realized now that I’ve made up my mind on the divorce case, and there’s no going back. He has promised to leave you alone. He doesn’t have a choice again.’
