Rather than get a loan can you get a relative who can bear the cost at least for the first alongside your parents? I believe you stand a chance of increasing your scholarship amount should you do very well in your program. In my opinion, the idea of a loan for an undergraduate program sounds over ambitious to me and in particular, the returns on the investment upon return to Nigeria might not be so great considering that our Naira is yet to be stable. Thinking from an extreme of the spectrum.

This is a very solid response!

@Sarcasticmofo:

Try and explore ways of financing the first year. Since you have tuition sorted, you are almost there. While in school, you can look out for on-campus jobs and learn the ropes within your first year. Then a summer internship (or a school-based internship during the summer) + your increased knowledge of on-campus jobs + the possibility of getting more scholarship from god grades will set you on the right path.

The challenge is getting that first year sorted. You'll be fine afterward. Plus, I don't think it might be a good idea to get loans for undergrad cos master's degree is the undergrad degree in the US grin grin. Also, the H-1B lottery favors master's students more (especially the STEM folks), which places you at a disadvantage.

So, just try and raise funds to sort your first year and then learn the ropes of on-campus jobs and you'll be fine.

Sorry man...
Did you apply to only top 20 universities?
Did you get a/an supervisor/advisor before you submitted your applications?
Any publications at all? What's your class ranking?
Did you do the TOEFL to compensate for the low GRE verbal score?
Apparently, you don't have a Masters degree and your application is likely to contend with applicants who have masters degree and also stellar GRE scores, that's another view though.
What's your research interest and how did you present them to potential supervisors or graduate coordinators?
How strong is your SOP and LORs? Did your references turn those letters in as at when due?

My two cents is that you should apply for a chemistry program and make sure you ask for space before you throw your money away.

Also, Texas A&M University Kingsville (TAMUK) is likely to waive Out-of-state tuition for you. Ch

Please assist to look at this proposed transcript

Vo: Good morning
Me: Good morning sir

Vo: Pass me your passport and I-20 please
Me: Please have it

Vo:So describe your program for me?
Me: I am going for my masters in food science and my major is animal science. My research will focus on poultry particularly on the effect of ghrelin in feed consumption and pulmonary hypertension as it affects Nigerian poultry and chicken consumption.

VO: what do you intend to do after your study?
Me: I plan to come back to Nigeria and work with regulatory agencies like, Federal Ministry of Health, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). NAFDAC is currently embarking on a project to reduce the rejection of exported poultry products as well as to reduce the challenges of food borne illnesses facing the country. SO, a master’s degree in food science WITH ANIMAL SCIENCE MAJOR will give me the required skills and knowledge needed to tackle these issues. A lot of universities need researchers in Animal Science most especially poultry physiology. My Alma Mata needs a poultry physiologist and Professor XXXXX has informed the departmental board that I will be joining them after my study in the states so that we will have at least 2 poultry physiologist in the department and He will be able to rest as he is getting old.

Vo: How do you want to pay for the cost?
Res: My Dad who's the CEO of XXXGlobal Concept. They are into importation ,trading and distribution of LG brand both home appliances and electronics. I have his statement here with me .. Here it is...Please have it. Dr xxxxx has also said I will be interviewed for graduate assistantship position but he said that will be available as soon as I get to the school

VO:What are you doing now?
Me: I am a banker because that is the opportunity I got after school but because of my interest in research and academics, I volunteer working weekends and my holidays with Professor Bleep of Department of animal science, Bleep University. I have three projects under him, Two published and the last one in process. They are 1.Bleep 2.xxxx 3.xxxx

VO:How do you hear about the school?
[s]I first knew about this school through a publication on turkey in the journal of poultry science[/s] .I also made use of professional sites such as Institute Graduate centre for animal science , international livestock research institute, to come up with list of schools offering masters in animal and food science, then I came up with 3 schools I applied to.

VO: Why do you choose this University?
Me: I chose this University because they offered broad courses in food and animal sciences .Their program incorporate field work with basic course. They combine animal science and food safety as specialization which is my area of interest. Also, they have this ongoing project I checked into which is the effect of passive immunization against ghrelin on feed and water intake in poultry to improve poultry production in sub-saharan Africa”. This project has the potential to tackle challenges of ghrelin in poultry which is one of the issues which have been identified as a problem in Nigeria.

Vo: Your visa is approved, you will need your i20 at the point of entry.....
Me:Happy mood..

You have some good or standard response so that a good foundation. Keep preparing and ensure you prepare for a wide range of questions

Me: I am a banker because that is the opportunity I got after school but because of my interest in research and academics, I volunteer working weekends and my holidays with Profes
Dont like that bold ......... I am a banker but i also work Unpaid / Voluntarily ............. remember this is an interview so it all about Selling yourself well and confidently . Sometimes it all about packaging

How did you hear ..... This is a better way to start .I also made use of professional sites such

Dr xxxxx has also said I will be interviewed for graduate assistantship position but he said that will be available as soon as I get to the school.......... That you interview doesnt mean you will get it so you cannot really say this , on how you intend to cover the cost . If your dad bank statment is sufficient then there no need to mention this

Hey guys, I know this thread is for students and persons wanting admission into American schools but since I'm also a Uni student on a Summer Work and Travel (J1 exchange visitor visa), I'll still post and get some feedback. I was interviewed last month on the 18th in Ghana but I was DENIED. Awaiting my next interview on the 8th.
The questions asked by the consular were:??-
1)Where do you work - I'm a student, 2)where are you going to - I'm going to Minneapolis in Minnesota,
3)what's the company I'll be working for - target field,
4)do you know anyone in the states - yes a relative who is my uncle,
5)where does he stay - ohio,
6)will you go visit him - I dont think so(i repeated twice cuz he seemed not to have heard or maybe was giving me a chance to change... I really don't know),
7)are you married -no I'm not, do you have kids - no,
cool how long are you staying - 3 months..
9)He also asked what I read in school and I said , I'm pursuing a 4yr bachelor's degree program in IT. He denied me. Where did I go wrong here? Please help me assess this. Is it because of how I answered or the fact that he thinks I lied about not knowing if I'll visit my uncle? I felt my answers were too brief.

hello, thanks for the responses so far.

First of all the remaining cost of living is about $8K and it's me and my guy that both got the full tuition Scholarship and we're planning to stay alone in one room apartment for this first year which costs $500 per month...

The work study program of the school is $9.50 per hour for a maximum of 20 hours per week and that is $190 per week and $760 per month. Then for two of us that is $1520 per month. Neglecting alot of hours we'd have to work in Summer and still going by normal 20hours, that is $18240 for both of us at least for a year. Our rent for a year is $6000 and feeding let's say $5000 combined that's leaving us with $7240.

So the loan I wanted to take was about $2000 each for both of us, so that we can use it for small feeding, on ground transport and cover our settling there. Once we settle there and start work study. We would definitely be fine... Not to mention outside scholarships and grants.

I also don't have any relative in the US. I am also in STEM

I’ll be applying for a US student visa for a MBA and I would be sponsoring myself. Can non-bank statements be used as financial document. For example a statement of stocks (equities) position which I can easily convert to cash or I need to convert to cash before the application.

Did you say you applied for J1 visa? Viewing your post from the lens of experience, your visa was refused because of the appearance of your relative on your application. Also, your responses to question appear to be natural and not the type you actually prepared for. The J1 visa could have been granted. Anyway, you can reapply.

Good luck.

Any financial document with details of amount available will work, but the US embassy honours statement of account more than any other documents, especially if it is a document they cannot easily access its authenticity and verify on the system.

I didn't say it is not good o. It is, but consider the profile of student here. What he studied for his first degree, his age. I have a strong profile on MBA students refusals lately. I am just waiting for him to drop his profile. And you know when you got your visa. A lot have changed since then. I am not trying to scare anyone though. He is fine. He should just package himself very well, and I hope this is not an MBA program that is $40-something thousand plus a year?

Liquid funds work best! However, once you can show that you can easily convert those investments to cash, you might have a chance. What school are you attending?

An MBA admit from a top 15 US b-school will HARDLY get visa rejection! And yes, a top 15 MBA program costs $70K-$80K per year for tuition.

The biggest problems for such students is to get the admit (Stanford GSB has ~6-8% admission rate) and to have the RIGHT profiles to land the juicy consulting, investment banking and tech jobs. Visa is the least problematic thing for those students.

Without scholarship or GA, I tell you refusal is 100%! You seems to believe in top this, top that! That is not how it works now. By the way, give me a list of top 15 MBA in the US? You should understand that when a VO is making decision (base on recent changes within the last 12 months), the rate of tuition fee is a major factor, especially without a major funding from the school. How many Nigerians can afford $70-80K MBA? lol. Affordability is a key in getting a student visa these days. And that is why student with considerable scholarship or GA have an edge over those without when it comes to getting the visa. He can go to the TOP 15. It is cool, just make sure you tell him how he'll pay the tuition, and whether MBA worth that.

You are talking based on assumptions. Top 15 BSchools are not normal graduate schools - they run like a well-oiled machine.

Once you get admitted, they offer EVERY INTERESTED STUDENT financial assistance through scholarships, fellowships and loans. They don't leave you hanging like graduate schools do. As long as you present an i20 with scholarship, fellowship or loan from a top 15 bschool, your visa is almost sure!

Visa is not an issue for those students at all... Not at all!

And 90% of those students do not seek fr graduate assistantship roles especially in their first year. In fact, elite MBA students do not think about graduate assistantship in their first year because they invest all their time in networking for those competitive investment banking and consulting jobs.

They only do assistantships in their second year after landing their dream internships which are often converted to fulltime offers
