My Unforgettable Experiences With Honda; Advice Needed! by Sharmeenator(m): 9:41pm On Apr 09, 2019
I created a thread in December 2017 seeking for advice in choosing between a Honda and a Mazda car, link here: https://www.nairaland.com/4238985/need-choosing-between-honda-baby. After all said and done, I went for the Honda Accord (baby boy) based on my budget and the advice given. My mechanic certified it OK after advising against the Mazda 626. We paid for the car, serviced it and did some body works where we discovered the underneath of the car to be badly rusted due to being parked for too long. The car turned out to be a nightmare. cry

Since I bought it, I have been a very regular customer at different mechanic workshops. I have changed nozzles (can't count), pumps like 4 times, injectors, power steering pump, steering rack, rusted fuel lines (took us months to fully solve this issue), shafts, ball joints, thyroids, back and front lower arms (welded) and many other minor things which can consume a lot when you calculate how many times you have to change them. There's no month I use the car I don't visit the repair shop. If I should mention everything I have faced in the space of 1 year, 4 months, this post will be too long. My car has broken down on the road; in the middle of the road several times during the day, late at night, sometimes causing traffic (can be so embarrassing eh!). I have spent so much on the car; even my wife is jealous. My experience has been awful that I'm so scared taking the car out especially with my family in it.

Despite all these, I don't regret buying it, as I have learnt so many from these experiences being a first car. To prevent a repeat, I'm here seeking expert help and advise to guide me in buying another car (the Honda is up for sale). I have seen many cars online within the range of 400k to 600k (my small budget wink). I'm lost for choice. Mechanics advised I go for Toyota like it's the only brand in the world. I really don't like the Toyotas my budget can afford to buy. I have some cool models and brands in mind but I don't know which to go for and which not to go for. Kindly offer advice considering fuel economy, ease of maintenance, availability of and inexpensive spare parts, availability of mechanics (both pros and kazeems), ruggedity, common faults and solutions and proness to faults.

Cars in consideration includes but not limited to the following:

Nissan Maxima
Nissan Altima
Nissan Sunny
Nissan Primera
Nissan Almera
Nissan Sentra

Volkswagen Jetta
Volkswagen Bora

Ford focus
Ford Taurus
Ford Escape

Chevrolet Aveo

Hyundai Accent
Hyundai Sonata
Hyundai Elantra

Skoda (I'm nor sure about this brand)

Audi A4 and A6

Honda civic (is it true it's leg doesn't pull like other Honda brands?).

All within 2000 to 2006/2007

I will appreciate your kind help.

Update:

Thank you all for your advice so far. I really appreciate all your efforts. I really wish I can increase my budget, but man got other important things to do with money. Here is my updated bucket list:

Hyundai Accent
Hyundai Sonata
Hyundai Elantra
Kia Rio

I learnt that Hyundai and Kia spare parts are too expensive and not common to get compared to Toyota, Honda and Nissan and the bodies are too fragile and fail easily. Pls confirm!

Honda civic - I like civic but I'm worried about the Honda leg issues. Can someone confirm to me if Civics legs are without issues.

W202 C class - I'm really worried about the cost of maintenance and parts cost

Please help add to this list.

I don't know much about cars but my neighbor has been using the car for over a year and rarely visits mechanics and I haven't seen his car develop any fault

The best advice I can give you is to go for a direct tokumbo brand save yourself the stress. Most Nigerians only sell their cars when it has started giving them barrage of faults.

Also, stop buying cheap cars. They're cheap for a reason.

U better go for a Toyota or golf 3 and leave all those cars u listed there. With ur budget most of these cars listed will probably give u more problems than the Honda I'm even seeing Maxima, Altima, Sentra, Audi a4, a6, VW Jetta in ur list. For that budget u might be getting a lemon.

Hello sir all car have there on problem but in diffrent ways.
I Will advice you to go for hyundai accent.
The accent is one of the least expensive car in the market. Both body types feautures and also one of the best warranties in business sector. It have a six a six standard airbag and their five star frontal crash rating add to model value.
It is not the fastest or the most impressive car but it is fun to drive and the milleage is amazing. It is fuel economy and also require low maintainance cost. Note - it is pron to sluggish movement meaning poor acceleration quality.
ENGING TYPE = 4CYLINDER
ENGINE CAPACITY = 1.4 OR 1.6 LITRE
ENGINE HORSE POWER = 110HP
TRANSMISSION = 4 SPEED AUTOMATIC AND 5 SPEED MANUAL
BODY TYPE ARE :
HATCHBACK 3DGS = 3 DOOR
HATCHBACK 3DSE = 3 DOOR
SEDAN 4DGLS = 4 DOOR.
Thank you

guy why the knack for bad choices?
with that budget, u might not get the best of the automotive world... but at least try to get some reliability.... isn't that ur major challenge right now...

a 1998 Camry can go for that price and with a bit of fortune, u can get a very good one!
you don't like Toyota, u think the people driving them like them for their beauty? think again!
the mechanics telling u to buy Toyota, are they the ones that will be fixing ur vehicles? if yes then, I think u need the sentra or Almera so u can learn some more things about cars!

If I am to choose from ur list above, then I'd go with the civic!

OP, from your list, your best bet is 2004/2005 Honda civic that has not been abused and if you can drive manual, more peace of mind.

OP, I had a similar experience with my first car, same baby boy. Honda is a good car but we bought the badly used ones. My second car was also another baby boy which I enjoyed and love. Very rugged and smooth Even my mechanic places calls to ask if I travelled. So, it is not about the brand sometimes but how is it managed and maintained. Give new car of same brand to different people and check their maintenance report from the users after a year. You will understand my point. I'm not very good in technicality of cars to advise of a particular brand but you will be good with a healthy one of whichever brand you choose.

To a certain extent.... You're right. Heard a golf 3 driver complaining about village people behind his inability to pay for his instalments.... That the car had been nothing but trouble ever since.... I asked him to open the hood...lo and behold... I saw the troubles plaguing him... All springs were constructed.... With bed springs... Even the one on the carburetor... The one working with the throttle pedal... Then a plethora of other managed things.... I had to just bluntly tell him... CHANGE YOUR MECHANIC!!

This is also a great option, OP. I usually recommend this for those looking for something in that budget range. Imo, it's a much better car than the Corolla of the same year. Bonus points if it's a manual, very fun to drive.

I disagree, so many other things contribute to a comfortable and long lasting man-car relationship.....

I have said this before and I will say it again....
sometimes it's about the brand!

who are the proposed mechanics that will work on the car? service ET all? or I want to stay @ ikotun and have a mechanic in lekki for servicing and minor repairs (major repairs not inclusive if u bought a good buy) .....

where will the car be used? u would want to use a vehicle with high ground clearance if u stay in an area with terrible roads .... or if most of the sensitive and equipments or electronics are located lower than the norm u mustn't stay in a waterlogged environment

some vehicles are notorious for certain problems.... so it's not an issue of good maintenance solves all problems

to a reasonable extent, maintenance is key to the longevity of the ride....

so many things brother, availability of parts nko?

go and kukuma buy a car that to service it u need a specialist located in Abuja and parts to be shipped from Europe.... then and only then will u understand that it's not actually a maintenance issue, it's the environment where the vehicle will be used that's a key player in choosing a vehicle!

oga sometimes is about who will assist u maintain the brand!

just buy car and begin to spend?
yes if u give a Benz to a user whose mechanic is only versed in Toyota.... the result will be pissing thru the nose!

CITYNGR is right in this case tho......
He should find the right mechanic! now the problem with brand maintenance is that specific brands require specialists that are not readily available in some areas.... parts might also be scarce so the proper maintenance will cost significantly more!

my point t being, for someone coming from hell..... his list is quite extreme....

VW bora? mechanic that cannot manage common baby boy that every Tom dick and Harry can fix..... he cannot fix properly, is that one a mechanic..... brand is not and never has been the issue except for a few demon influenced cars.....
the challenge is not limited to maintenance as well.... one can be spending money and think it's maintenance, not knowing that the money is being warehoused in someone's pocket till when it'll be used to become a landlord!

it goes beyond technical expertise as well, what good is an expert without tools to work with or readily available parts....

one should research well about his/ her intended vehicle of use, with particular focus on environment to be used and proximity of key players!

except of course one is pipedreams.....
I know a guy who once bought an Infinity and in less than a year bought a corolla to support the infinity, and in less than 2weeks wanted to sell it off, then later told us that he gave it to his wife to use.

Guess why?
