And how many of them have used that to solve life problems, skeptically I don't think any Nigerian can be fortified enough here to find cure for deadly disease like cancer, whereas the white people are the ones who sacrifice all they have to cure it.. Also there's never an engineer who could boast of a outstanding inventions... We're backward !!! It's never advisable to.let your child school in Nigeria (for those who are financially capable to do it). If u do watch CGTN on dstv.. You'll know what I'm saying... In china undergraduates of electrical engineer are making super crazy inventions with so much enthusiasm .. My friend here in Nigeria you'll see undergraduate praying and reading vehemently and tempestuously, just for good grades? Lol
When I was little I always dream to be a great scientist one day and make inventions to make the world a better place, unfortunately when I grew up i found out those dreams are dreams that can't come to pass here in Nigeria!!
Hopefully, I pray I travell out to Canada this year

bro,go and develop yourself than blaming school system,Nigeria is not alone in this...even the so called Whites, are suffering the same thing.Bottom line is:We are Lazy
wirinet:

Still the same excuses. How is the government making it hard for engineering to thrive? You mean, you design and engineering solution to one of the numerous engineering challenge we have in Nigeria and the government banned you?
I had a friend who dropped out of year one from elect/elect department in Ife and started building LED signage. He took his product to Alaba to demonstrate to guys selling such imported items. He started getting orders. I borrowed him money to start business. He did very well and now he is out of the country. This was far back in early 2000s, when Internet was still a novelty in Nigeria.
There are many companies with numerous engineering challenges and nobody to solve them. They have to import engineers from outside Nigeria to help repair and service their industrial equipments.

Educational system in Nigeria is trash, u only learn theories. In here we only read and study for grades don't expect much.. The country is backward the best way is to study engineering aboard for more outstanding practical knowledge. Pray for Nigeria
we've all been reading for grades since primary school.... I thank the universe I woke up from that delusion

I agree with you 110%
Imagine a whole Engineer in Nigeria will take their car for Oil and filter change when it is not mandatory to do so like in the west, Some cannot even set a torque wrench as we speak
There's nothing wrong if an engineer takes his car to mechanic to service.

Sir, please readup all about most successful engineers and see the role play by their environments (School, government, teachers, parents etc.). Give Nigerians European, American, type of opportunities with good leaders and see if they won't excel. Don't blame those poor souls please.... You and I can help them in many ways, because our schools, student, management, government, lecturers etc. are without visions and meansto be successful. Abi you think those politicians arenot wise enough for sending their kids abroad for schooling. They understand the system more than we do.

Guy, you have to be like the animals.
Maybe you haven't seen, but I have personally witnessed right here in my compound, lizard digs the ground and lays eggs inside. After some months, the baby lizard hatches from the egg and comes out of the ground.
No father, no mother, no government.... Nothing. That tiny lizard start to run about my compound looking for food and shelter and escaping the eyes of preying hawks that can swoop down and eat it. A few months down the line, that lizard has survived and grown and is toasting another female lizard. They do their hanky-panky and another egg is laid. The old lizard goes somewhere and dies of (lizard) old age.
It has lived a complete lizard life from birth to old age without any government intervention in his life all inside my compound, under my nose
...
Uncle, make employment O. Stop crying for government.
I'm not begging for employment oooo

Bro,when I was in 200L in Engineering, we were taught THERMODYNAMICS, I was not satisfied with the method of teaching of our lecturer,I decided to browse the internet and found out our lecturer is better than some lecturers in MIT,the difference is that they use Projectors to teach ,they engage their students with the industry and the lecture hall is very conducive. I entered 300L, same thing in SIGNALS AND SYSTEMS...now I am in 500L.I have learnt the hard way.if you must succeed in Engineering in Nigeria, you must learn the hard way, truth be told, none of our lecturers is ready for any upgrade, some of them do not kmow the trends in Science and Engineering
that's why I said;WE ARE LAZY.

CodeTemplar:
1. To start with, Engineering is largely design oriented and not building or development as people like to claim.

2. The Nigerian University system is set up to produce research focused or academic focused graduates and most practical Knowledge we ignorantly ask for from the university system is suppose to be acquired in polytechnics and Tech Colleges.

3. Your lecturers too were taught theories and don't expect them to teach you practicals even if they put in extra effort to get the practical knowledge they posses themselves.

4. the university isn't a place for practical focused skill acquisition. Polytechnics and technical Colleges are.

5. The average Nigerian is delusional and expects too be spoonfed with great ideas and their implementations. As engineers, they give you a knowledge of engineering principles and it is left for you to use your imagination to create things out of the principles you have learnt. In accounting, student are taught its principles and nobody takes them to a real life accounting dept to work, It is up to you to figure out what goes in where as you work with those principles.
My brother, polytechnics too are just a mere scam too. I'm a final year HND2 elect/elect student of one of Nigerian polytechnics and d only thing that we do is to read handouts(mostly photocopied from textbooks). No single bit of practical as pertained to what was taught in lecturer classes. Even if we were just been taught theories and also visualizing it(projector) especially the machine aspects for easy assimilation with the theory aspects. but all we just do doesn't exceeds d handouts. So my brother, how do we want to progress in Nigeria.
If u wanna study engineering, u go abroad

That's happening cos they are trying to copy university style curriculum and teaching instead of focusing on bridging the gap between technical/practical and theory.

sir, we can't blame those lecturers because of government failure to do the right thing or students who are just reading for good grade only. We have thousands of problems confronting us in Nigeria from various angle direct and indirect. We need solutions.

Am not just talking of changing oil in car, u don't just generalize engineers, there is wat we call specialization. if my car is faulty I don't just pick up spanner to start repairing because I am an engineer, when the fault is not even an electrical fault.

I never said fault, I made mention of service.I said are you telling me you as an Elect Eng cannot change the OIl and Oil filter i n your car?
SO IF i THROW YOU A TORQUE WRENCH YOU won't EVEN KNOW HOW TO SET ONE.
Engineering is more than Education, it should be a passion, what I'm trying to say is this, you should even hand on B4 venturing into Engineering if not you are going to be a book Engineer.I can do basic wiring in my house and my car and in most machinery I work with, when it comes to those that need certification as per guarantee, I leave them ones to the pro.

I think you are missing the point, a doctor might have an impact on road construction if consulted so is a lawyer.

It is impossible for anyone to implement anything. University or polytechnic
You get put so much theories to your head your brain will discard everything since you are not taught how to implent it.

Its like pouring water to a basket, the moment you finish exam, everything is gone in your head..
An average graduate does not remember anything, what is the point of learning if you are going to forget it all at the end of the day?
People that think like you are Nigerian problem.
There is need to reform the educational system in nigeria..
We are not even talking about making innovation..
Lets just be copying what developed nation are doing.. let us be manufacturing substandard phones, tv and all. One day we will get there..just like china did.

There is need for reformation. How can anyone defend the old and outdated stuffs we learn in Nigerian universities.....

You are part of Nigerias problem. Honestly

I understand everything you are saying bro and you are correct. Polytechnics are even worse I wonder the poly practicals people here are talking about. The only technical-oriented course that has manage to escape this theory approach is Architecture.
