They had a sham of a presidential election but this is what everyone is arguing about - whether a past VP was born in Nigeria - even when his place of birth is currently geographically part of Nigeria. This is why Africa is not progressing. We have a way of holding on to the most meaningless things and giving it full attention to the detriment of what is truly important. Plus illiterates wrote our constitution with its many holes. Those who have taken a chokehold on power are trying to distract the nation and as usual everyone is distracted. When would the people in this country finally have sense? |

Ozkar: USA must also be backward when Obama's eligibility to contest presidency was challenged that he was not an American by birth even after election until he presented documents to show he was born in Hawaii. We simply need to change this constitution to allow all Nigerians contest presidency whether by birth, native or referendum. 2 Likes 1 Share |

schoolboij: Sigh.... what manner of Lil jackrabbits do we have on NL lately that can comprehend elementary sentences. Let me help your ministry, Jada was 100% Nigerian soil as at Independence because British Cameroons was a mandate of British colony of Nigeria who just gained independence from Britain,i hope this is easy peasey for u to comprehend. |

neyobills: Read what I responded to and see if it made any sense. If they were part of Nigeria at independent, why was referendum conducted again in 1961?if it was part of Nigeria why does it need to be called British cameroun? Why not just Nigeria? I think you need a crash course in logic. You don't make any sense. Besides, you are the only one saying this even premium times just corroborated it. 1 Like 1 Share |

cyrilamx: Good! I am testing your knowledge and cognitive reasoning. You answered correctly, especially given your statement that I made bold and I want you to note the statement in bold alphabets. Please answer another important question: If I was born in Ife central local govt of Ife prior to the division of Oyo state into Oyo & Osun state. Today, if I am asked where I was born, where should I say I was born? |

schoolboij: Premium times is wrong and u can take that to the bank, prior to 1914 Jada was southern Nigerian protectorate,by 1916 during the 1st World War British Forces waged war against against the German colony of Kamerun and took over thus all of Kamerun became a British colony under Nigeria, in 1922 the French and British decided to to split their colonies French Cameroun and British Cameroons,British Cameroons was also a British colony under Nigeria. In 1960 Jan French Cameroon gained independence while the colony of Nigeria and British Cameroons was to gain Independence in Oct, what would then happen to British Cameroons, therefore they decided to allow indigenous people of British Cameroons who would rather prefer allegiance to the new country Cameroon than be under the British Nigeria colony to vote in the spirit of fairness and equity. So to answer your question Jada was never a territory or colony of present day Cameroon and has been a Nigerian territory as at Oct 1 1960. I hope I have made myself clear? |

Warship:The 1991 constitution wasn't in place them. Look. I am an Atiku fan but the truth is in a competent court. Atiku has no case going by the 1991 constitution. But i still feel Atiku should continue the case. Because even Buhari's waec is forged! That alone has disqualified him. And also, worst case scenario, Atiku wins in the election case. Tambuwal who is his runner up in the PDP primaries, ascends to the throne! |

schoolboij: In British Cameroons the major question was whether to remain with the colony Nigeria or to unite with the newly independent Republic of Cameroon because Nigeria was yet to be an independent state In a UN-supervised plebiscite in February 1961, the south decided to unite with the former French Cameroun, creating the Federal Republic of Cameroon. The north voted to join the Federation of Nigeria. In other words French Cameroon gained independence to Cameroon in Jan 1960 before British Cameroon to Nigeria in Oct 1960 therefore indigenous people of British Cameroons had a right to choose if they wanted to continue as a British colony or would rather join a newly formed Cameroon because they had an agreement under a treaty called League of mandate nations. |

schoolboij: Is it your eyes that is paining you or your brain or both I rightly stated the fact that Cameroon gained independence in January while Nigeria gained in October 1960,the plescibite been held in 1961 doesn't change the fact that Cameroon gained independence before Nigeria. |

NgeneUkwenu: Nigeria started existing as Nigeria on her Independence Day - 1 October 1960; prior to this date, the contraption known as Nigeria existed as British Nigeria. Originally, British Cameroon (parts Northern and Southern parts, this distinction never existed until 1961) was administered as part of British Nigeria. Consequently, upon the Independence of Nigeria from the Britain on 1 October 1960, all parts of British Nigeria became Nigeria by default. However, the 1961 Plebiscite provided the opportunity for the former British Cameroon to choose where to belong - Nigeria or Cameroon? The Northern part of British Cameroon chose to remain Nigerians while the Southern part of British Cameroon chose to become Cameroonians. As a result, Atiku Abubakar (born 25 November 1946) and other citizens of similar origin are Nigerians. Nevertheless, by your analysis if Atiku Abubakar's legitimacy to contest for the presidential election of Nigeria must be by birth as provided in the 1999 constitution requires interpretation by the court of law; then, President Muhammad Buhari's legitimacy to rule Nigeria is requires the same interpretation. Muhammad Buhari born on 17 December 1942, this makes him a citizen of British Nigeria by birth but not a citizen of Nigeria by birth. |

Wallade:Going by your question, was Ife central Local govt a different legal entity apart from pre independent Nigeria? Did Ife need a plebiscite to become a component unit of Post independent Nigeria? If PDP and Atiku had seen any loophole in the constitution against PMB, they would have exploited just like they did as regarded his certificate in 2015 and even now at the tribunal even though the SC had ruled in favour of PMB. No one is disputing this citizenship of Atiku albeit by choice but He isnt a Nigerian birth. The 1999 constitution didn't include citizenship by PLEBISCITE as qualification for the Nigerian presidency. I can't find anywhere it did. Maybe the interpreters of the constitution will tell us. Until then accompany me as a keen spectator... |
Re: Jada Atiku's Birth Place Was Part Of Northern Cameroon- Premium Times Fact Check by Wallade(m): 6:34pm On Apr 15, 2019 |
cyrilamx: OK. Let me cut the chase, Atiku is a Nigerian by birth. The fact that the 1961 Plebiscite provided the opportunity for the former British Cameroon to choose where to belong - Nigeria or Cameroon - and the Northern part of British Cameroon chose to remain Nigerians while the Southern part of British Cameroon chose to become Cameroonian made his village and state become Nigeria in effect. That means he is Nigerian by birth. Besides, Nigeria was initially a British colony before it became Nigeria. Should we then conclude that our ancestors and all born In this land before Nigeria became a republic and independent are not Nigerians. Atiku never had to apply for citizenship of Nigeria by referendum, naturalization or registration. He and everyone born in the former northern cameroon were all born in Nigeria especially because the village and place he was born is right here in Adamawa, Nigeria. 1 Like |

vacanci:The backwardness is not about challenging birth, it's about not being able to focus on the more important things - after the shameful elections, we'd rather argue over a citizenship that should have been argued in court before the elections. In Obama's case, what was contested was whether he was truly born in Hawaii, not whether Hawaii qualified as part of the US. Even if Obama was born before Hawaii officially became a US state, he'd still have been a natural born US citizen. Some said the documents were forged, and that he was actually born in Kenya and taken to the US thereafter. Not even one person tried to rubbish Hawaii as not being a true part of the US despite it becoming part of the US pretty late. Here were are trying to make citizens from a Nigerian state second-class Nigerians just to distract everyone from the real issue about election irregularities and the claim of a stolen mandate. |

Re: Jada Atiku's Birth Place Was Part Of Northern Cameroon- Premium Times Fact Check by vacanci: 7:16pm On Apr 15, 2019 |
Ozkar: The argument is not whether Atiku is a Nigerian or Cameroonian. He is actually a citizen if Nigeria. The question is what type of citizenship is he holding? The Constitution requires BY BIRTH which is not his case. Why can't he clear the air himself the way it should be. We should blame the kind if constitution we are using, which allows all elected public office holders to be citizens by any way except the president which is by birth alone. By testing it in court, it will solve alot of problems and a possible review can take care of this. Similar thing happened in Zambia when the vice President was to take over power but was restricted by his citizenship not being by birth. They operate similar constitution like us. |
