@Davechapelle and Lexus430, Just discovered my Dad is a British Passport holder,he gained it while working in the UK years back, He returned to Nigeria 1975 and haven't returned to the UK since then. I was born after 1983. He wants to renew his passport, I also read that the citizenship is transferable. A family friend said I will need a lawyer to help me with the process. Don't really know how best to go about it. Please I need all the help and assistance I can get.

I think You are right, you should be eligible to be a citizen as long as your father's citizenship was not through decent.

He should renew his passport then you should do your application. I dont think you need a lawyer just yet. Once all your documents meet specification they wont deny you your right

P.s your dad was just sitting on gold

Anyways Bros try to port sharply o, Baba God don open way and dont go wasting money on any lawyer or immigration agent.

Once you keep your info on the low from village people, the process should be pretty straightforward

You also need this old passport in your application, its proof he was a citizen when you were born..best of luck with everything

Any bank of your choice........ They are almost all the same.....

If you don't want bank charges etc etc, and derive no accounts benefits......

Simply open a savings account.........

Citizenship by decent has since been scrapped. I got mine through that means some 15years ago. But the laws have since changed. Notwithstanding you could always call up the gov.uk helpline for further assistance. I really hope its fruitful!.

Citizens by decent has not been scrapped .... it still very much there. What was changed it if your parents are married or not married if you want to claim through your father .

Before 2006, If a child was born before 1 July 2006 and their parents were unmarried, then the child could only become a British national if their mother was a British citizen. From 1 July 2006 onwards it modified to be automatic even if your parents are not married. You can now automatically get it from either parent

I was wondering myself. It will be unlawful for it to be scrapped as it would affect too many British people living all around the world.

Yeah they removed the discrimination about father been married to mother. Especially nowadays when partnership or baby mama/ baby daddy is becoming more acceptable

It would be very hard to scrap it . I think its basic fundamental right to pass citizenship to at least your first direct line. ... other generation maybe or maybe not but first line i think should be a right . Uk and Canada also changed second generation citizen by decent. That one although they can still apply for rights but its not automatic
