Hi guys.. Is it possible (and wise) to decline a funded offer that was accepted before April 15, for another offer that came in after April 15. Does it have any implication?

Thanks!!!

Yeap ... feel free to put your self first and go with the best offer or where your heart it . The school whom you declined their offer will be alright last last and they can easily give it to someone else .

First of all, I don't even know where this April 15 thing came about, lots of schools out there are yet to make decisions regarding admission n it's way past April 15.

To your question, even if you had already obtained a Visa with School A, you can still change to school B. So change if you want to, it feels awkward but it's a normal thing.

Which two programs are involved? If u care to share, people here might help u make better choices.

I feel like your problem is not whether or not u want to change, perhaps, u r not just sure of whether u should change.

Thank you very much for your response Baba!!!

First off, the Second offer is a PhD and more in line with my future aspirations, while the first is Msc, I applied to it for safety purposes. So I'm quite certain i want to go for the second offer. However, the first offer had a clause about a council of graduate school, where they make it seem like after April 15, u may not be able to reject d offer again and what not. A lot of schools are under this council of graduate school resolution too. I just want to be certain that it won't cause any problems for me in future if I opt for the second offer now.

Its possible but doesn't speak well of you. However at the end of the day, its your life and only you would know what your dreams are and where you feel it will be achieved. So If I were you I will choose where my heart wants to go so I don't end up regretting later. People have done it before and people will still do it, its life. Just send a good email to whoever you have to inform.

Thanks so much my boss!!

How somebody who was supposedly recruited from his village and given an emergency visa by a 'top 10 b school' would be having conversations with himself with different monikers, patting himself on the back for giving 'top quality advice' is really something for tv cheesy
Didn't know genius senior management MBAs of JP Morgan or is it Morgan Chase had so much time on their hands or perhaps they have to be borderline crazy and miserable to get recruited 'on campus' for the position.

What do I do?

The appointment booking site no dey lie. You or someone must have used the information before. Try use the "forget password" option. Input your email and see if a password reset message would be sent to you.

See this man, it could be of help.

I was accepted to 1 PhD program before April 15th and accepted. I got accepted to a better program after April 15th. Can I go to the other program instead?

Answered Tue

I was a bit surprised by one of the other answers and thought I should chime in.
By the tone of your question, it looks like second program (the one that admitted you after April 15) is *significantly* better than the first program (the one you accepted). It also looks like you like the second program much more.
If so, go ahead and accept the offer from the second program. But I suggest you do it in the following way : Contact the second program and tell them you have already accepted an offer, but you like their program better and that you would be *happy* to renege to accept their offer. Ask them *explicitly* if they are okay with this. If they are, accept it, make sure it is a done deal and then tell the first program.

The danger of contacting the first program before the second program is that they get really pissed off, withdraw their offer, contact the second program and use the Council of Graduate Schools resolution to complain. In that case, the second program may also withdraw their offer and you may be screwed.

The key thing to remember is this is ultimately about you and your life. You are going to be devoting 5+ years of your life to something, and potentially have the rest of your career/life shaped by it. Choose the place where you think you will be happy.

This is not about loyalty. Remember that the first place that made you the PhD offer did so not out of loyalty to you, but just because you were among the best of their pool of applicants. If the same pool of students had applied to the first place as the second place, you might have been waitlisted there as well.

Don’t worry that by reneging, you would have prevented another student from getting an offer. The first place will likely have a waitlist, and if you renege, someone else might get the offer. When I applied to PhD programs, I got an offer in late May which I declined — I presume that was because I was on a waitlist. I know of a friend who got a PhD admit without funding in March and an offer for funding in July because a TA who was supposed to join reneged.

Reneging on accepted offers happens quite a bit (at least in the USA), and at least in industry, people do not retaliate against you professionally for that. In fact, I (and I know of many others) would prefer that a candidate renege as soon as possible (if they want to renege). I have seen so many people who cite ethics and morality on accepted offers, join, and quit within 1 month or 6 months or 1 year because they are unhappy. I have seen Assistant Professors do this to departments. What a waste of all the effort put by existing employees in mentoring the new hire or new student or new professor and bringing them up to speed!
One of the answers mentioned potential retaliation when you apply for faculty positions at the first place. Sure, that can happen. But, do you want to base your decision now on something that has a small probability of happening 5 yrs down the road — they may not be hiring in your area then, and you may not want to be a faculty member after your PhD. Even if they retaliate, you would have tens of other places to work.

Hmm.. Numerous questions..first, how do you intend to fund your education if peradventure you don't get scholarship (some percentage/nothing)? How do you intend to pay for Visa fee, application fee? Sevis fee? flight? etc. Nothing is 100% certain you can have the sat score and still not get scholarship..There are many variables involved. You know what, we all had dreams and passion to school in the US but sometimes you have to be wise about it. Why can you do your undergrad in Nigeria and then proceed for graduate studies? With a good undergrad degree and grades, securing funding for graduate degree wont be a herculean task.

Thanks sir, It's not as if I'm not having it in mind that I'm not going to do my Under .G here in Nigeria... The feelings i get whenever I think about taking my under graduate degree in the U.S but financially incapable to take a standardize test which limited my options hurts a lot....

I'm taking my UTME next year... Or probably obtaining my pre degree form .... Either ways I'm getting admitted into Nigeria Universities next year by God's grace

Please guys, I need your inputs regarding my proposed transcript.

Me- Good Morning
VO- Morning, pass me your passport and i20.
VO- Where are you going?
Me- I am going to the University of Toledo for my Masters in Civil Engineering with concentration in Environmental Engineering.
VO- Why US and not Nigeria?
Me- As a future lecturer, achievements are measured mostly by the level of research one has undertaken. There are no active researches being carried out on employing bioinformatics to understand the role of micro- organisms on environmental engineering systems and human health by professors in Nigerian universities hence why I want to go to the US and undertake this research.
VO- How did you know about this school?
Me- I carried out research on usnews.com and gradcafe, streamlined the search with my research interest in environmental sustainability and UT was among the schools.
VO- How many schools did you apply to?
Me- University of South Florida, Toledo and New Haven.
VO- How many gave you admit?
Me- All gave me admit.
VO- Why this school over others?
Me- I chose the University of Toledo because it is the only university undertaking research in the use of bioinformatics to understand the role of microbiota on environmental systems. My decision was also aided by the 50% scholarship I received from the school.
VO- Why this course?
Me- I carried out a research on Gaps in Solid Waste Management: Generation, Collection and Remediation using Akure Metropolis as a case study and discovered that the waste management and remediation systems are poor. Hence, there is need for environmental engineers to develop more efficient management and remediation methods.
VO- What will this course do for you?
Me- The MSc degree in Civil Engineering will prepare me for a PhD program which will help me take up a lecturing job in my alma mata as I finished with a first class grade in my department.
VO- Tell me your study plan
Me- I will take 21 credit hours of coursework and 9 credit hours of thesis. I will take courses like Air Quality Modeling, Environmental Engineering Chemistry etc.
VO- Did you write any test?
Me- Yes, I wrote GRE and had 310.
VO- I can see you have some form of scholarship. How did you get this and who will cover the rest of the tuition and fees?
Me- The scholarship was given on merit based on my GPA and GRE score. My dad will cover the rest of the fees.
VO- What does he do?
Me- He is a businessman and the owner of **** and **** ventures, companies that deal with the sale of pharmaceutical products.

Normally what you should do is this:
Check if the two schools are listed in the council of graduate schools. If BOTH are listed, contact the firsst school and tell them you are no longer interested in the offer (you do not need to say the name of the other school you are accepting). Then they should give you a release letter (not all schools give so check with the school), thereafter you can then accept the new one. thats all.

If the second school is not on the council of graduate schools (i would be suprised if its not since schools such as Havard are on the list), then just inform the first and immediately accept the second, you dont need a release letter.

I'm set to take the SAT I've been studying for the exam for the past 4months now but haven't seen any opportunity to register due to financial incapability...

Pls can anyone generous register me for the SAT...I know I might not have anything to reward the person but the God of Favour will favour the person in returns....

Sevis is valid for one year .............So grab a pen and paper

Write down the exact date you paid sevis for example Jan 1 2018
write down the date you are attending your next interview

If it within a year then no need for another sevis , in this example , if it before Dec 31st 2018 Then you dont pay , if the interview is after Jan 1 2019 (one year later) then yes you pay
