I arrived Frankfurt Germany Tuesday morning and got to kiel later in the afternoon by train. Thanks to guys in Kiel for receiving me and providing accomodation.

I flew Ethiopia airline to Frankfurt and connected Kiel by train with a train ticket already paid for through airline ticket booking. Frankfurt to Kiel cost me around #2,000 ( same for anywhere in Germany).

If you are coming to Germany and you are on a low bugdet like myself, you may want to book your arrival to QYG ( German rail and fly). 72 hours to your departure, you would be able to generate your online train ticket at DB website using your confirmed airline ticket number. This train ticket will take you to ANYWHERE in Germany from your arrival airport. It is valid till second day after your arrival. Check your airline booking itenary to know your final arrival airport in Germany.

Most airline agents in Nigeria do not know about this. Ethiopian airline staff at VI told me it is not possible.

I wrote and got a mail from Ethiopia airline frankfurt office who confirmed its possiblity.

I saved like #100k with this plan through Ethiopian airline.

Other airlines have the QYG, such as air maroc, etihad etc but Ethiopia seems the cheapest.

If you have much luggages. Please make sure your bags have tyres. It would help a lot. Also be prepared to pay €1 for trolley at Frankfurt airport in case you are landing here.

A copy of your admission letter should be in your hand luggage. You may have to show the immigration guys at point of entry.

For those worried about renewal of RP, read this


On the renewal issue: Like you all, I was also worried about it before coming here and for the first couple of months. It was a big deal for us especially as work wasn't even forthcoming (word of advice here: If you want to spare yourself some financial headache, my advice is to come here in the summer. Simple reason is because you most likely would get a job faster than in winter where most businesses are already in slow-motion mode but coming in winter is cool too because there are jobs to be got even on the same day you land if you go look for it so nothing is cast in stone. We are winter peeps and we be balling cool ). Then we realized something and asked a simple question, have we heard or known anyone that went back to Naija because of money for renewal? Answer is still NO. That means there must be ways to achieve the golden renewal that we just need to learn and learned we have. It will probably be counter-productive to say a few things about that here because some of these details do have peculiarities to regions while most are just a simple word of direction from those on ground.

My advice: Plan, Plan and Plan. What do I mean? While selecting cities and schools, try and get info on the place and how affairs are run there. make friends or at least good acquaintances with those already there and get them to tell you what is obtainable. For those coming to Kiel, we will hook you up with the available jobs that can at least feed you till you get your permits, ways that can help you buffer up enough to add to your account for renewal and you will have people who can help lift you across the mark.

The truth is it is not a bed of roses. One thing you should have in mind is that you will only get shitty jobs (compared to what you were doing or would do in Naija), get screamed at and feel bad for yourself (almost regretting) and say "na me be dis" and feel so homesick you want to give up and just head back home (it will get worse even) embarassed. This will happen no matter what but it is better if you have told yourself the brutal, honest truth before sending in those applications so when you start having those feelings, you tell yourself "it is only for a while, the goal is near".

So, renewal is an issue but definitely relatively easy to overcome with the right info and the right group of people.

To abandon ship or not: To those that want to run away from naija, I commend your courage and support your decision to seek greener pastures especially via the educational route (as long as you complete it and proceed into professionalism o). The state of the country in naija is disgraceful and one needs to make bold decisions. To this end, I would like to say that if you have any means of generating revenue in naija (houses that can go on rent, buses that can continue plying the roads and bringing in money), please and please do not sell them to accomplish your dream of coming here. Instead, I would advice that you either tarry a bit in naija and save up more till you have enough to come here and then handover those assets to someone you can trust to help manage but ensure all monies are still paid into your account from where you can then transfer for whatever needs to be done or gifted. This way, you are continually in contact with your business and up to date. You never know when the accumulated little cash will come in handy. If you have little or no responsibility and all you have is a bus or marwa or okada and selling it will complete your money to come here, by all means do that because they are depreciating assets anyways and the ROI in coming here is way way more than the cost of selling it.

Working while studying: If everyone will tell you the truth, it will be that you will be quite comfortable once you get the hang of jobs around you and you start making some money. you can undertake more than one job depending on your schedule and how you plan your time. So understand that it will be hard for most initially but I promise you that it will get better and even you will not have plenty time to come to the forum to read comments as often as you did before getting here or in your first few weeks because your tune will change from Obiwann's "winter is coming" to "the hustle is real" .

There are 2 tertiary institutions in Kiel namely Christian Albrechts University and Fachhocschule Kiel (University of Applied Sciences) and both have great quality of education.CAU is the more recognized and highly rated of the 2 (Top 30 in Germany) but it is research based, so if this is your forte then by all means. If you are more practically oriented, IT systems development/business management and co that would grill you in readiness for the professional working life, then FH it is. This of course is based on perspective and of course do a proper research about your course of choice and its course contents especially (There can be serious K-Leg if you do the naija style of following the better named courses as them fit shock you when you enter ).

Both schools are linked and so FH students have access to facilities at CAU like the Library, sports center, fitness center.etc. There is also the semester tickets that cover the whole of Kiel (train, ferries, buses). Only difference is that CAU students get a rebate on the direct bus to Hamburg airport (7euros instead of about 15euros and 12euros for the round trip). FH students have to pay the full charge but that is nothing to worry about because the airport is not a frequent trip and there are alternative ways of going on long trips for really cheap prices.

Housing is kind of reasonable here though it could easily become a nightmare (as moi experienced). The studentenwerk handle student accommodation for both schools and there are cheap to mid-priced rooms available (availability is higher in the summer as there are less applicants and intakes in both universities). Early application is usually the best thing to do but there are also other options that would suffice till one finds right footing.

Working as a student here is just like any city in Germany, available but conditional . Ability to speak the language even if it is the pidgin version (like Williamso would call his) would make things a bit easier.

Another thing is that everyone needs to realize that you have to bear your cross and so do your own research, ask questions and talk to people about what you need. For example, when we got to Kiel, we were played all the work stuffs and what we needed to do to start engaging (mostly meant that we would wait a few months). The funny thing is that when men started digging, stuffs that even those we met here didn't know about were available and now they kind of say we came and raised the ginger level. Hustle is usually at its peak in the summer months (In Kiel, the Kieler Woche is it for men ooo, we die well )

Abeg bring your food oo,as much as you can carry so you get to ease yourself into the bread/potatoes eating mentality here and of course save yourself some cents by eating in. There are afro-asian stores here so noodles, titus, kote, croaker fishes are available. same with palm oil, plantain, yams et al

Me no get power for babes matter o but if that is a condition then I have one for you......start working on your 6packs and throw a few sentences of Deutsch into the mix and you are set (a few good dance steps may help too as men dey hangout for nice domes steady).

There is a strong Nigerian community here starting with the Nigerian Students' Association to the Nigerians in Kiel Association (them dey host very bad party every December), so you are sure to get all the help you need right from naija.

Anyone coming to Germany

My advice, well, bring a lot of sweaters though you could get for 15 euros here, hoody, a trainers / chocks would be fine (one would do). Germans don't care if you wear Gucci (It's best you get winter boot and coat here).

Bring necessities (toiletries) you would need for the first week and Indomie too, cos you gonna struggle with the food. N.B: Liquid ain't allowed on flights and put most toiletries and all that in transparent nylon. If you need a cheap flight take Emirates, it's long but they would just keep on feeding you and you would beg them to stop + you get a meal voucher at dubai airport + you could watch new movies and series on the flight..e.t.c. and most of all sign up for your schools Student Buddy program unless you have someone who's willing to assist you in your city or else you would struggle and waste a lot of money. 9ja and germany are totally different trust me Germans are nice, they don't need a penny from you. My student buddy actually loaned me 90 Euros and was willing to loan me 250 which is the whole thing but I hate debts till my block account becomes active without me asking her. They wouldn't talk to you because they ain't open like 9ja but they're really nice.
