Maybe you didn't read the article because you just repeated same thing.
He said "university education" meaning carrying degree without content in you will take you no where and that's the bitter truth, you are am engineer who don't understand anything about an engine or a computer scientist by degree but don't understand even basic programming language.
Truth is Nigeria university system needs urgent review and total overhauling of curriculum

Who is to ensure the content and develop curriculum?....if u are saying I should not reckon with my degrees .and look elsewhere....d other elsewhere,I am also finding it hard to survive, wat do I do?.

And who says everybody wants to be a millionaire? That is how we got it wrong in ds country and that is d reason d president also said "eldorado"...I know he means wealth but is total rubbish....wat we all want is for basic things of life to be in place..not everyone dt is craving to hv billions and trillions in account

What do u mean by folding of arms., Nigerians are some of d most hardworking people..Despite being educated, some are now Keke riders, okada riders.. Their are now many lawyers and medical doctors that are now tailors...In 2011,I saw a medical doctor being paid #70,000/month.some of them survive on locum..When he travels out for medicals,is he going there to meet babalawo?..If those doctors didnt acquire d education and their government investing heavily in their infrastructure, will he go there...he paid those people their and dt is "eldorado"
kudos

In as much as i agree that the universities curriculum needs an overhauling, you should note that, the university cannot teach you everything. I don't know who waa taught how to write a CV in the university or how to prepare for interview.

Of course bro, we need to add our common sense, but I just maintain that a university degree at the very least should be enough to afford one a decent life. Apparently, he just inferred that it wouldn't.

People are going to school to get degree and all form of aquirement because of money, not passion,it is not to make a difference in the society the nigerian parent have sang it to their children that it the only way to financial success, the president is telling the obvious that it isn't people should change the mentatity.that as being passed on to them it is wrong,if graduate keep seeing it as an el dorado they will keep getting frustrated and no wonder most are discontent with their pay even if it a reasonable sum.those that are bitter about his statement are those that see it as d real deal.

Not even in the US or UK are you guaranteed wealth for being a graduate, that exactly is the point. You might get jobs no doubt but it is not a leeway into success.

This one is just typing trash. Comparing the UK and US with Nigeria is a slap of the faces of Trump and Queen Elizabeth. People can live a normal life, afford basic amenities, afford housing, food and at least a car in those countries without any degree.

But in Nigeria, with a degree, and without any degree, poverty is the leader of the citizens. People don't struggle much to afford ordinary food in UK and US. But in this useless country, to afford morning food is hell.

Nigeria is a disaster. I curse Nigeria everyday.
If you pray for the country, it won't work.

Why?

Because it is a country governed by devils.

Guy,I graduated 10years ago and was lucky to get a job d second month I finished NYSC..I know d amount I sent to my friends out of my salary when I was newly recruited..
I know some folks with the thought of let's get additional certificates that are now chartered accountant, PhD holders , medical doctors etc dt are jobless... Even those dt managed to secured job and have necessary certificates have been sent packing...A medical doctor of mine is thinking of going to the north cos he heard there are vacancies for doctors...the highest he has ever earned is 70-80k as locum...

Guys are really trying, some even got married with the hope maybe d children will give them luck...when it comes to degrees and certificates , Nigerians have them in abundance. The government dt supposed to provide succour is saying we should look elsewhere......where should we look at again.
The fact that doctors aren't well paid shows you the unseriousness of the wicked and self-righteous government we have.

You spoke from an uneducated perspective.

What is education?
A tool that empowers an individual to improve himself/herself - Prof Sophie Oluwole.

Many of us get education but beyond that fail to achieve the goal for self-improvement.

What is self-improvement?
Anything that adds value to the dignity and attainment of security and self-worth.
A graduate that goes to get training and becomes a plumber or a electrician will soon become self-sufficient in his ability to have his own apartment, feed himself, date and marry and keep a household. His mate out on the street roaming around with his resume, knocking doors looking for employment will soon land in nairaland looking for financial assistance to feed.

Get the message and dont allow partisan politics to block your reasoning. Buhari is on point!

Sir, a medical doctor fresh from d University., without job, earning less than 100k and some being owed salaries......wat do u suggest they do

An engineer decided to think outside d box..Got necessary certificates in programming but without job decided to establish a computer school .Despite that he is still finding it funny.Students are not paying, fuel expense alone is 1,500 per day and their is rent,LG taxes....I can go on and on....

Your friends dt are graduates might be lazy and incompetent but not d few I know...Some of d females after graduation went back to study fashion designing, interior decorating, beads making, hairdressing, cakes etc and they are still finding it hard to survive, despite diversification of their degrees...chk Instagram ,u will see them

There are poor people in the UK and the US as well. The poverty rate differs from scholar to scholar, but there are Americans who cannot afford food.

I’m not sure you got the point. What happened to “Getting a degree is a step towards ensuring a better future for yourself, and government will work with you to ensure you put your education into entrepreneurial ventures and help us fight unemployment”

That’s being presidential

There are poor people in the UK and the US as well. The poverty rate is not constant, but there are Americans who cannot afford food.

Beggars in the UK and US has hope. ALL Americans can afford food.

Their case is like that of a child who has #100 but to that child, its small and term it poverty. While there are other children who will see #10 and jubilate and call themselves bigboys.

Almost all Americans can afford iPhone, but in Nigeria, only our celebs and those involve in frauds can afford it.

How many legit citizens can afford Benz in Nigeria? In America, its a normal car to them.

How many youths can afford a laptop and confidently go out to do legit business with it in Nigeria? But in the US and UK, young lads go to parks and public places with free internet access to connect to do business.

See let's stop deceiving ourselves. Nigeria is in a mess, people are suffering. Some people have no hope of today's meal.

The reason why people are doing it for the money is because, thanks to the government, passion leads you nowhere. By not creating platforms/jobs where talent and skills can flourish, develop and be profitable, people have lost the incentive to develop many academic skill for the sake of it and are now seeking the money. Why would I want to go through the immense stress of learning physics or engineering to the highest level for the sake of it when I would likely end up teaching in a secondary school or in a bank? I could just get a first degree alone and achieve either and have time to make money instead of studying the advanced level courses. Where is the incentive?

The reason why youths don't take education seriously but take entertainment seriously is because of the incentive of making it big with a few hit songs. For education, the lack of platforms/jobs makes the education virtually irrelevant.

What exactly is not true about that statement? Too many of us cannot separate the message from the messenger. That statement holds true in any country period..... USA.....Canada... China...if you disagree name one country where having a degree will guarantee you an El Dorado. The only country where that was a given was Libya under Gadaffi...if you had a degree you were paid the appropriate salary ...employed or not.
Many degree holders sit and expect to be employed by the FG. You have the degree... use the knowledge/skill you acquire to pave your way to El Dorado.... you have the potential.... use it... that's all he is saying.

My graduated in Nigeria, left d country for her master's in d UK..Today,she is a writer and she survives and takes care of her bills as a writer.
Try and be a screen writer in Nigeria and see wat will become of u.

Nigeria graduates are not saying dey want to become instant millionaire after graduation... Government should please provide basic amenities for them to survive..I hv never had light for almost 2 weeks now and I spend N1000 on fuel alone...imagine if I was using it to run a business..how will I survive?.

Education that he is saying will not provide "eldorado" is even my right not a privilege. It is now left for me to decide wat I will do with it...Arsene Wenger studied economics and today he is a coach.

Judging by the position he occupies today, you'll completely agree with him why he didn't bother himself to acquire any certificates in the first place. Being a politician in Nigeria, is the only guaranteed meal ticket you can get.

I get your point, but I believe the president should only be making such comments if he's doing anything to change things. I study in Europe, and I must tell you that studying here changes everything about one's mentality. The style is practical and straight to the point. For instance, by the time I graduate, I should have done at least one year of serious internship in a real life setting relating to my field.

I use modern equipments and just as a formality I'm made to use the older equipments to at least know how they work. I will likely just sneak out with a 4.something GpA but inside me I'm so confident that I know what I'm doing.

The average first class Nigerian cannot make these comments cos the system is a mess and opportunities are too far between. I have classmates that are in school cheating their way through, but las las as long as they understand basics that will earn them their degree, they'd still earn a decent living unlike in Nigeria.

So the president should not throw stones, he's a huge part of the problem. The least he could do is appoint competent and innovative people in positions
I finished from a state university very medicine school if I can say so myself. But I know what I had to do to get employers to look beyond my school. Sometimes what school teaches you is one thing, what you decide to do with your life and how you decide to get there is another. My medicore school taught me I wasn't learning jack and I made up my mind to also school myself get relevant skills and I thank God it paid off. We all know the Education system in Nigeria is below par, it's a song we've been singing since but we should not allow the state of the nation limit us. I know it's hopeless sometimes but it's very possible because you see our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We the youths should strive to develop ourselves Bleep the government they don't care about us it's only then that our voices can be heard.

My point is, having a degree without knowledge is nothing. Education doesn't bring money but application of the knowledge you have acquired from your chosen profession gives you the edge.

I made a reference to someone who studied computer science but can't handle anything related to computer programs how will he make something out of his degree??

That said the job is on the government to overhaul our curriculum and its no news that we have a docile GOVERNEMNT and if we don't push them nothing will happen, Jr's high time we all start agitating for a total change of curriculum and introduction of new courses that has a bearing in this 21st century

Kindly tell Nigerian parents that. Not everyone with a degree is employable, and not everyone who has no formal education is destined for a life of unemployment. We need to focus on vocational training as well as it cannot be a nation of engineers, lawyers and doctors surely. We all have meet doctors who have no business being medics and lawyers who could not even defend a fly on poo.

The sad part of it is that, even those that developed themselves ended up being shortchanged.
A university degree is enough guarantee of good life in Nigeria if you have connections. Except you're exceptionally talented, you won't get anywhere without knowing someone in Nigeria.
Those that learned one skill or the other, how are they faring? Most of them are being paid peanuts compared to their counterparts in other countries.
I left my former employer when I realized our colleagues in other countries are earning almost ten times our pay in Nigeria for doing the same thing.
The country is messed up beyond repair, I had to leave. Smart people should do the same.
Nigeria will not move forward unless she starts to reward excellence.
