The Federal Government says it is coming up with a policy that would remove the ownership of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders from consumers.

Igbere TV reports that the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, made this disclosure on Tuesday.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on LPG penetration in Abuja, Kachikwu said the policy would require that the ownership of the cylinders rests strictly with the dealers and distributors.

He said this was part of strategy to deepen the penetration of LPG, also known as cooking gas and address issues of safety.

Igbere TV reports that Kachikwu also disclosed that the Federal Government had reached an agreement with two original cylinder manufacturers to deliver 600,000 cylinders to LPG distributors on credit, with a pre-payment period of 18 months.

He said the Federal Government would in the next couple of days commence the clampdown of illegal roadside LPG dealers, while he directed all skid operators of LPG to immediately convert their outlets to micro distribution centres before the enforcement begins.

They should pipe it to homes grin

This will be prohibitively expensive and logistics involved nightmarish.

I think what they meant is that , once you come, you take another cylinder of equal size. You don't have to stick to your own but there will be quarrel when you bring a neat one and an ugly one is given to you in exchange.

However, that's how it's done in the developed world.

Ah! No one should bring one yeye or fake dirty cylinder to my house pls. If the gas will not be piped then this cylinder ownership I don't see how it will work.

You are right I know some dealers do this thing the FCT but the problem will arise when for instance they come to pick my current cylinder and drop a dirty one just like you said.

Except if they will bring theirs without exchanging at first.

I also don't like the part where government intends to disband roadside dealers, I feel they should be integrated into the system by some kind of merger and given loans to help them expand and meet standards.

On the cost of cylinders, consumers won't own them so they'll be no cost for the cylinders. All cylinders will belong to suppliers.

Another next level policy ....some people will be out of business now. How much are they gong to sell the new government cylinder and what happens to the old ones?

It makes a whole lot of difference to me. I don't look out for quality alone, I also consider how appealing an item is.

gypsey:
What difference would a dirty or clean gas cylinder make? what is important is the gas inside not the Steel cylinder, i would think.

If they know they can't pipe it like every other responsible government, they should allow people own and determine the safety of their cylinders.

Some gas dealers will start introducing inferior cylinders into the business and before you know... God forbid disaster!

Nigerian government officials always mortgaging people's lives for personal benefits... The real improvement would have been for them to pipe the gases, but no way, they wanna eat money and leave people with problems.

Ibe Kachikwu, this one is odeshi ooo... E no enter at all!

If that's an excuse for not piping gas, let them forget about the idea of banning cylinder ownership. That could be another monster in disguise in the future.

Who benefits from this policy? The consumers or the manufacturers of the cylinders?
What are the problems created by the existing practice?
And by the way who are the cylinders makers bid to benefit from this arrangement? We need to know them.

Trust me, policies like this are usually done to benefit one Alhaji that will be in charge of importing cylinder. Bunch of thieves.

They've removed VAT from them, but you will never hear them say they will start selling 12kg for N2,600

This was how it was done in the 90s. We take our empty gas cylinders to the distributor and we pick another one. I don't know why the process was changed. I remember that time, u may go with a clean empty cylinder and come back with a filled dirty one or you go with an old and dirty one and come back with a clean one grin

grin but I don't see it happening, it is unnecessary as we have bigger problems than that.
People could be bringing faulty cylinders and when the cost of repairs become high for the dealers, they would have to revert to the status quo as government won't be of any help to them in that regards .

That is how it is done in a sane society.to forestall fire accidents and death.

If properly implemented, it will be good for the nation.

God bless Nigeria.
