BravoDe:Your points are highly educative. I hope people learn from this... I think the trend is as old as Nigeria democracy... People get carried away by the course. Physiology, Nursing, Medical Lab Sciences are wonderful courses too!!! I prefer Nursing to Medicine tho.. |

The stress of schooling in nigeria is too much. Getting admission to study medicine and surgery in US is very easy. Just get the requirements according to your choice of school and apply. Then write their exam, the moment you pass, you are automatically admitted. And if you don't pass, you through the prerequisite. |

Yes it is! The secret of champions is persistence. Forget the number of years spent seeking admission, in the end, it is worth it. Our major problem in Africa is lack of ambition., we reduce everything to naira and kobo. In your long essay you never bothered to tell us exactly why the girl is passionate about becoming a medical doctor. My advice for her is to seek the face of God and find out if medicine is the path that God has chosen for her. Most importantly, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Physiology, Anatomy, Pharmacy, Medical laboratory science are considered critical part of the field of medicine in developed countries and those who studied these courses are equally gainfully employed in Research laboratories, Research institutes, hospitals and universities. However, you may need higher qualifications such as M. Sc/PhD to enjoy your career. Unfortunately, government's lackadaisical attitude towards research and development has made medicine and surgery and the likes (Nursing, MLS, Radiology, Optometry and Pharmacy) the only viable options for science students. Well, I feel that it is more tasking and brainstorming to pursue a research-based career like Biochemistry. Of course you need M. Sc/PhD to actually gain requisite and advanced biochemical/molecular biology skills needed to carry out innovative research. Those who can pay the price will definitely earn more money than any Nigerian doctor via research grant, post-doc, Research fellowship in reputable international organizations and consultancy. |

sureheaven:I totally disagree with you sir. It's one of the toughest to get admitted for even though it's a must for the applicant to have a first degree in one of the basic medical sciences. And surviving through the course of the training is more stressful. |

To be candid even though medicine and surgery does not worth all the hype but an average medical doctor or other health professionals still have a slight edge over other graduate especially when you are a son or daughter of nobody. That's the fact though other graduate might later blow but that initial frustration is always minimal for this set of people |

Right from my secondary school days, I never have any iota of passion for medicine and surgery even though am from a family that is predominant with people in that sector. The truth is that the value that was earlier attached to the course is diminishing day in day out. More so, it is no longer easy like before to get employed after studying the course. My advice; if you have been repeating JAMB cos of the desire to get admitted into studying medicine, why don't you have a rethink and start from something like Biochemistry or any other related course |

Hahnemann:Any graduate that finds himself in the oil and gas sector as well as revenue generating parastatals such as NCS, FIRS, NIMASA e. t. c will surely earn more than doctors regardless of his course of study. |

Medicine is high overated. I read an article about an anonymous man who is a computer programmer making 1.3 million per month which no doctors in Nigeria can make such money |

When I was 7 years I wanted to become a footballer,I was in love with football and I was good at it, it's the only thing I wanted to become better at.I wanted to go pro,I was so sure though I was 7.When I was about to graduate primary school,I begged my dad to take me to wasimi football academy but he never listened,he belonged to the class of folks who still believe education is the best legacy. So I went to one secondary school,I still continued playing. Then when teachers asked the regular what do you want to become question, I cycled from petroleum engineering to pharmacy to psychology to computer science, then I realized one decision messed me up.I entered the university on my first trial thanks to God.Right now I'm about to enter 400L microbiology UI.. Microbiology wasn't on my list....What I'm trying to say is life's one fvcked up place, chase your dreams but sometimes you have to let go.....I've not let go of mine though |

I believe the reason why we gush over medical courses in Nigeria is because of information being passed to us. We are often told to go to school, get good grades and find a better-paying job. Someone who has no interest in medicine will go for it because of it a high paying career. Here is the list of richest people No medical doctor is among them TOP RICHEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD Jeff Bezos Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison, Larry Page, Sergey Brin Jack Ma ALL OF THE ABOVE ARE PROGRAMMERS Am not against you if you have an interest in medicine and surgery or other medical courses, am only referring to those who have no interest for it or are studying it because they want a high paycheck. |
