Its understandable how Nigerians got sentimental over the match and blamed ref, VAR etc, but u have to ask urself, with the kinda defensive set up were u expecting nigeria to get a result from a highly attacking side like france. Though i was somewhat impressed by their defence, i knew deep inside that it was only a matter of time before they slipped up and allowed france to take the advantage. Even when the nigerians had the chance to take the game to france they still preferred to go back and defend! Against a highly attacking team like france that also had home advantage?
Now on the goal, fact remains that the referee was faultless. There are rules to every game, and even the goal keeper was allegedly told the rule before the penalty was taken. If both feet are off the line u receive a yellow card and the penalty is retaken- thats the FIFA rule which was explained to the goalkeeper prior to the penalty. Truth is, no matter how sentimental the ref wud have wanted to be, she just had to be neutral and take that courageous decision. And that was a cleAR penalty btw.
And moreso, i even thought the ref was actually more favourable towards nigeria on the whole. The team got it all wrong in their first match against norway which they could have easily won if they put up a good defensive display like they did against France.
Please lets put sentiments aside, that team never looked like they were in for a fight against france, and going defensive against an attacking team who also has the home advantage was suicidal. There was no way they could have lasted the whole 90mins!
You made valid points. But I do not agree with you about the penalty part. That was a clear case of robbery and cheating. The VAR official and referee connived to dupe Nigeria. But the girls could have done better.

The ruling about retaking penalties when goalkeepers step off the line before the ball is kicked is ridiculous. If it's obvious, yes, retake the penalty. But if you have to use VAR to see it, then it's really crazy

The ref was correct so as the var team ... We are too sentimental and that's our problem... If u look at that picture if c that a Nigerian player also was in the box...

France players encroached into the box during the second penalty but somehow VAR didn't pick that.

Was it only the French players that encroached into the box?? A Nigerian also did...or dint u c it

Nigerians for u...that's y the country can't progress... Sentiment will never allow us speak the truth... All decisions today we're absolutely correct... It was a clear penalty, tho not intentional and it was a second yellow due to it being a goal scoring opportunity... The goolie 4ked up cos she dint abide by the rules... The problem with African football is that we ain't just smart

Y are u guys so sentimental... How did they connive?? It was a clear penalty tho it was not intentional... The penalty in the CL final was not intentional as well but that doesn't mean it wasn't a penalty... The second penalty stood cos the French players were not the ones that encroached... A Nigerian player also entered the box ...

Literate wey Sabi watch match... Why d VAR& ref no call for retake after the RETAKE?

Buffoon... Better carry your load go France go dey scrub dia floors for them.

Weyrey!

Calm down, are you also aware that another retake due to that reason might probably have resulted in a second yellow and a sending off of the goal keeper?

The girls did well but they could’ve done better. I’ll blame the technical crew. Like in our match with Korea, Chikwelu was getting very physical and frustrated with a yellow card but they never considered substituting her. They made several dodgy decisions in this match too.

Oparanozie, Okobi and Oshoala performed poorly yesterday but they remained in the pitch. I believed Nigeria could beat France or get a well deserved draw if they had put in more efforts.
France tried to use the same tactics that they used during the friendly but our defence was a lot better. Ebi and Ohale played with much better confidence.
Chiamaka Okeke played so well, even with a two man-combo to out run and out wit her, she remained solid and didn’t present the French girls the chances to provide diagonal crosses/passes inside the Falcons 18 yard...even the few chances the French had, Ebi and Ohale remained compact and composed.

Our forward could do a lot better. It’s the same problem that plagued them against Cameroon, South Africa and Ghana. When Nigeria unlock the potentials to continue beating these teams like the days of Nkwocha etc, I don’t see why they’d struggle so badly against Norway and France. Nigeria can beat these teams if they play more intelligently.

So far, this is not the best we can offer, Oshoala, Okobi and Chikwelu need to up their ganes. Oshoala especially can do damage to any team if she gets her acts right. She seemed to be running without being aware of the obstacles ahead of her. She runs into traffic or gets frustrated when she’s challenged.

I hope they stay off social media this time and continue to work hard in case they scale through to the next round.
