What would help society is if we see actual rapists getting punished for their crime. it would set an example for others. But getting public sympathy as you said does not help the situation. In a month's time, all this hysteria will die down, everything will be forgotten and we are back to square one. The first place to report a rape case should be the police station or contact NGO's who are involved in fighting rape especially when you can identify the rapist and that should be done immediately.
