Show immigration your expired Nigeria passport and the new one if ready, if not you will be given travel pass that indicate your departure from Nigeria. Upon arrival at Heathrow or Gatwick airport line up with UK/EU and check in yourself. Meanwhile it is necessary you visit Murtala Intl Airport to make enquiry because immigration can be funny at times in Nigeria

It depends on your year of birth. Not all UK born individual are entitled to a British passport. The law changed in 1983.

Good day all,
I recently got my UK passport sent from the UK after a successful application.
I was born in the UK but Nigerian by descent. I would like to know if I would be required to present my Nigerian passport at Muritala Mohammed Intl Airport in Lagos, before I can board, since there's no Nigerian visa on my new UK passport.

I am currently processing another Nigerian passport after I lost the former but I still possess an older one.

Advise from those familiar with this situation would be greatly appreciated!

I know of someone who was born in UK but was brought to Nigeria by the parents. After his graduation from futa, the parents applied at UK embassy in nigeria...they only evidence they provided was the hospital receipt where the guy was born. He got the British passport here in Lagos and travelled with it.....I don't know why you have to get a Nigerian passport again..Anyways I have my friend who is British citizen...currently staying in nigeria for the past 3years now ...Will ask him tomorrow

If you are travelling to the UK, you only need to present your British passport. However, when/if you are coming back to Nigeria for whatever reason, you will need your Nigerian passport or an entry visa on your British passport.

Having said that, it is to my understanding that you can only apply for a British passport from the British consulate in the country where you currently reside. Currently, first time application of a British passport must be PRESENT for biometric data capture etc. How your passport got sent from the UK is a mystery to me but maybe yours is an EXCEPTIONAL case.

I just asked a question why not allow him to answer?

Yea if you are born in UK you have the right to British Passport *BUt* if you are born in UK but live all your life outside the UK you will be given *right of aboard* to fly to UK with no visa with your birth Cert etc then when you get to UK you can now process your passport. My wife had similar situation but went back when she was 19 years old that was the procedure she passed through I have never witnessed or heard British passport was parcel or given to someone who has never owned the passport ever before in foreign land especially Nigeria so if you have heard of such kindly let us know.

If you don't belief me Pls go to www.gov.uk you will see your answer there boldly written.

As others have said: travel with your UK passport, show Nigeria passport when prompted for visa. Flip things in Nigeria: show your Nigerian passport, then UK passport when prompted.

However, please DO NOT use your expired Nigerian passport. Legally an expired passport is an invalid travel document. You might be able to get by, but if an official decides to use you as an example, you will soon discover that theory and practice are two different things.

I'm not sure the advice that you need only your UK passport to depart is valid, because you need to show that you're in Nigeria legally (either as a citizen, or as a visitor). Don't get fuzzy with this because Immigration can be funny.

If you present the UK passport b4 boarding at the airport, will be treated as a UK citizen and you'll be charged as Irregular Immigrant, renew ur Nigerian Passport and present both to proof that u are a Dual citizen.

His Nigerian passport has no bearing when he is traveling to the UK. He only needs his British passport, since he has one.

Actually, they'll still need to show their Nigerian passport, since their British one will not have a Nigerian visa in it. Yes, they're leaving the country, but immigration will still look to see that they actually got in legally.

**those guys will even ask for both your parents' and grandparents' DoB. As for the biometrics, as long as there are facilities that can take the biometrics, it can be done anywhere. All na digital, so it can be sent to the UK with no issue.

He will need to show Immigration he is in Nigeria legally (after all he has UK passport without a visa in it, so how come)...? a current Nigerian passport will be easiest way to answer those questions without long stories.

If they were born before 1983, son of the soil works. It really is that simple. Granted, they messed up a family friend's application for years (born in the UK before 1983, grew up in Nigeria), got played by the British embassy in Nigeria for so long that once the Home Office finally found out, the incompetent people got straight up fired. As in, they told my guy, "point", oh boy open yash finish.

Now, if you're born after 1983, ain't simple at all. Both your parents have to be citizens and married. Or you've have to have lived as a resident for 10 years or an entrepreneur (with like proper money in your account) for 5 years.

I am a Nigerian Immigration Officer and frequent traveler myself. According to the immigration act, No laws can prevent you from travelling to your homeland. Your UK passport will get you into the UK, and your Nigerian passport expired or not (e-passport) will be needed at your point of departure.

If you are born after 1983,.you only need one parent to be British.

Prior to 1984, you had to be born in Britain or your father had to be British.

By 1984, being born in Britain no longer qualified you for citizenship . . . . but maternal citizenship was recognized.

I was born in Britain just before the law changed while my brother who was born in Naija after the law change was lucky to.get qualification through maternal parentage.

I have once attempted leaving Nigeria (MMIA) with my British Passport only. My Nigerian passport was expired so i got an Emergency Travel Certificate from the Nigerian High Commission. So obviously on my way back to London I had just my British passport on me and I don't sound Nigerian. It was a difficult night trust me.

You need both passports and both preferably valid too. Again trust me.

That's so not true.

One can be the citizen of many countries as long as those countries allow it.

Nigeria allows dual or multiple citizenships.

He/she is right.

If both parents are not British citizens or have Indefinite Leave to Remain then their child when born in the UK must remain to live in the UK for 7-10 years( without leaving the UK) before the child will be granted UK citizenship.
