Don't feed the public with wrong information, the omu is an Oshimili and may be Aniocha title and not for the whole of Anioma, The Ikas and Ndokwas that occupies 5 local government areas of Delta State does not know or have anything to do with Omu title. It's strictly an Asaba/ Okpanam thing.

Is Asaba and Okpanam the only locations that observe the Omu title? U know little.

Julismma Aka Osagyfo,You are the one that didn't read the content of what you posted.. Saying that Anioma is an ethnic group is like saying that Onisha or Nnewi is an ethnic group.
Anioma is a name given to Igbo speaking part of Delta State, Delta North to be precise by Chief Osadebe in 70's.
Anioma is not an ethnic group..
They are Igbos. Go and tell Ngozi Okonjo Iweala that she's not Igbo or Chuzie family..( The Biafran war commander) that they are not Igbos..

Stop chasing shadow by thinking you can divide Igbos simply because some fell into SS extraction.
This is your mission on nairaland with your numerous monikers. You opened this thread not because of the content of the news, but you opened it continue your failed game

@ the topic.. the thread is not about promoting lesibianism like some people are thinking due to headline ... It's about ensuring the continuation of a linage
really but how will the lineage continue when there is no offspring

About 2hrs ago,i just discussed the same issue with a very handsome young man named Ebuka Olise(very sorry to disclose your name if you are reading this) from Oshimili LGA and he said ,even HE is not an Igboman!

The Elder Stateman, Philips Asiodu at the peak of the IPOB crisis berated Nnamdi Kanu for including Asaba in his Biafra and he said on AIT that he is not Igbo.

I you read the interview very well, you will see that the Priest-monarch also alluded to the diversity of their origin.

So there are indeed, several families from all these LGAs that reject the Igbo identity.
They can chose to call themselves whatever they like.

God has everything to do with it. I think you are wrongly assuming that God is ONLY for imported religions like Christianity and Islam?

Our Traditional religions know and acknowledge the existence of God, which they worship in their own ways.

They can be Igbo, Fulani or Ijaw if they say so. Allow them to define themselves.

You don't seems to understand my point;

1) The Anioma People should determine who they are and NOT other people determining who they are.

2) They can decide to be a different ethnic group (which appears to be the prevailing identity) or they can declare to be part of the Igbo people if they want (some Anioma actually call themselves Igbo).

Up till today some people still deny that there's nothing like HIV/AIDS but the reality is that millions of people are living with the HIV virus and many have died of HIV infection.

As Queen, I Can Only Marry A Woman –dunkwu, Omu Of Anioma

The Omu of Anioma, Martha Dunkwu, is a revered traditional ruler of Anioma land, which covers nine local government areas in Delta State. Anioma people are the Igbo located in Delta, who are separated from the Igbo in the South-East by the River Niger. Dunkwu tells OCHEI MATTHEW about the historical background of the Omu, its spirituality and others

What has been the most interesting part of being the monarch?

The most interesting part is the fact that the throne is indigenous to Anioma people. The two titles of Omu: Omu queen mother and Eze Nwayi (queen). Our forefathers’ intention was for the Omu to be a queen in charge of women. So, you find out that when I go all over the country, people look at me as if I’m a TV screen or movie star because they had not seen such before. Our former governor, Chief James Ibori, wrote me a goodwill message when I celebrated my 50th birthday, 14 years ago. He said I brought feasibility to this ancient institution. As a media person, I brought that to this institution. So, it has been interesting going all over the world because they didn’t know there is a part of Africa where their forefathers had decided 700 years ago that a woman must occupy this throne and play her part for the community to move forward. So sometimes at events, I’m the only female at a setting dominated by men.

What were you doing before you became the Omu?

I was a media practitioner. I studied in England, the United States of America and returned 35 years ago. I was a media consultant for the late Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo  Erediauwa, of blessed memory and the late Orodje of Okpe. At some point, I consulted for the Asagba of Asaba and about seven traditional rulers. I was in the consultancy business but when I became the Deputy Omu, I decided that the best thing was to start working for traditional rulers. I was Deputy Omu for three years and became substantive Omu for 17 years, so I have done the work of Omu for 20 years now.

How much do you miss your old life?

No, I don’t miss my old life at all. I must confess that what I am doing is the physical manifestation of spiritual conclusion. So, once God has decided on a matter, you cannot miss anything because that’s the intention of God.

How did you feel when you got to know that you would become the traditional ruler?

Well, initially I was apprehensive because in the past, Omus were women in their early 80s and 90s and as you are aware, Omu doesn’t get married. And if you are married, once you become Omu, you must leave your marital home. However, I was not married so I didn’t have any issue with having to leave my husband. I wasn’t quite sure of how I would handle it but when I was convinced that it was the intention of God, I took it upon myself to do the right thing and I will continue to do to the right thing.

How has your life as a female monarch been?

Rosy...(laughs). Well, it’s challenging when you cannot marry, go into a relationship or attend a burial. There are so many things you cannot do as Omu. However, the work of Omu is 70 per cent spiritual, so I have to keep praying. I also have chiefs attached to my palace. There are spiritual and executive chiefs in the palace.

What experience do you think you have had that you think came as a result of your being a queen ?

I am grateful to God and I remain grateful to the late Oba of Benin Kingdom . I learnt a lot from him . The Omu institution is very conservative and ancient . It is a dictatorship in the sense that no woman was consulted when few old wise men instituted the Omu institution . When many people see me and find out about the institution , they marvel . The challenges I have are even from our people.

So what have been your biggest challenges since you became the monarch ?

One , I have tried to fuse the good of the old times with the good of the new period to have something brand new . I don ’ t have any challenge from the people of the North , West, South- East or Deltans. If there are any challenges I am facing , they are from my people and not necessarily from Anioma people. They are from my own home – Okpanam – and of course , it is understandable because even the best among us are despised in their homes . Anioma people own this institution ; it is not a personal institution . So , one would not call what I experience as challenges in that sense . Even in Okpanam , the institution is for our forefathers and not for any individual . That ’ s why it is said that the Omu cannot abdicate the throne and people cannot put all manner of things in place to remove the Omu. So , in 700 years , no Omu has abdicated the throne and no Omu has been removed .

You can call yourself whatever you fancy but that won't make you an ethnic group.

1) All ethnic groups emerge slowly overtime from previously existing ethnic groups.

2) Ethnic groups can be a fusion of two or more ethnic groups and example abound all over the World.

E.g Liechtenstein People= French+German +Italian

Aja People in Benin republic= Yoruba +Fon

Ogori-Mangogo in Kogi State= Yoruba +Nupe+ Ebira.

Anioma= Igbo +Bini+Igala+ Ishan +Yoruba

Itshekiri= Yoruba+Bini+ Europeans.

You just publicly display your ignorance of the subject matter and understanding of the Geography of Nigeria.

Ondo State has no common border with the Heart of the Anioma. The part of Delta State that share border with Ondo State is Delta South senatorial district NOT Delta North.

The Okukumis are not settlers on their own Land.

PrecisionFx:

There could be yoruba settlers in Anioma, there could also be yoruba people in Ondo state who were carved into Anioma territory during state creation, it's no big deal.

Same way there are ijaws in Ondo state

Many young Igbo guys wrongly assume they know every ethnic group WELL and they somehow become irritated whenever any group perceived to be Igbo reject the Igbo tag. It's a great fallacy to assume that anyone perceived to be Igbo must embrace and be proud of their 'Igboness'

Give allowance for those that don't want to be part of you and identify those that are with you!

1) Olukumi is an Old Yoruba word for MY FRIEND.
Up til today, in Ile-Ife, Some parts of Ijesha, Ekiti and Ondo States, the Old People still refer to their friends as Oluku.

2) Ugbodu is the Capital/Head-quaters of Olukumi clan.
It was derived from the Yoruba statement;
Ugbo du mi la = The Forest saved me to prosper.

Eastlink:
You guys have done a good job editing Wikipedia pages, with fictitious Yoruba sounding names with all intent to connect Anioma to Yoruba links too. Una try! But at the end the Olukumi's remain Igbo's till this date. Even the word Olukumi pre-dates the Yoruba abi na Oyoruba identity.
Keep fighting a losing battle. As far as Ndigbo and the Olukumi's themselves are concerned the Oyoruba tag is dead on arrival. Go look for your siblings in Ilorin, Kabba and Benin republic. Yoruba map west of the Niger ends in Ondo.

That's unbecoming of a well brought up lady( I used to take you to be).

You can NOT carve out a territory from a State and add it to another State except they share a common border. E.g You can NOT say Onitsha was probably carved out of Ijawland in Delta or Rivers States since in between Onitsha and the nearest Ijaw settlements, there are several Igbo towns in between.

It's most unfortunate that Colonialism happened to Africans the way it did.

In the distant part, like 1000years ago, almost all of Southern Nigeria were ONE People.

1) If you start from Ile-Ife in the West and you travel eastwards, you will notice that the languages keep metamorphosing untill it becomes Igbo in Onitsha, just on the Eastern banks of the River Niger.
We share many similarities than the Tribaliststs are aware.

Yorubas are in the Western end of the spectrum with Bini, Urhobo, Itshekiri, Igala, Ishan in between and Igbo is the Eastern end of the spectrum.

2) For Instance,

Orisha (Yoruba)= Oritse(Itsekiri)= Osaa (Bini)= Olise (Ika)= Olisa (Igbo)= Deity

Omo(Yoruba)= Oma (Igala)=Omo (Bini)= Umu(Igbo)= Child.

Asee(Yoruba)= Isee(Bini) =Isee( Igbo)= Amen

Okoro(Igbo)= Okunrin (Yoruba)= Man
Okorocha(Igbo)= Okunrin pupa(Yoruba)= Light complexioned man.

Dimkpa (Igbo)= Igiripa (Yoruba)= Fully grown man

Oba(Yoruba)= Oba (Bini)= Obi (Ika)= King
Okuta(Yoruba)= Okwuta(Bini)= Okwute( Igbo)= Stone.

Enu (Yoruba)= Onu (Igbo)= Mouth

olisaokere:

Ofcourse it’s not something to wail about but what matters and what you should seriously put into consideration is that 90% of the A.N.I.O.M.A people otherwise refered to as western igbos are proudly igbos and identify as such and many are all in igbo group both home and abroad and you can’t deny them that or rewrite their history because there are few who feel they are from Yoruba land or Benin land.as a matter of fact many scholars have tried to establish the relationship between Yoruba-Edo-igbo people.
