Sadly, I have seen schools that parents pay 40-50k per term, yet the teachers are paid 18-20k. And even this meager amount deducted at any slight vexation of the proprietress.

If these issues are not addressed, then good bye to proper education in Nigeria.
True that
Teachers welfare is very important because it tells on the pupils.
The last private school I worked, on the first day of resumption, the proprietress said that #10k was stolen on her table and so it has to be deducted from our salaries, #2k was deducted out of my salary, because she was too careless to lock her drawer when going out, going on to say she trust her old workers not to do that, meaning I was the prime suspect. First day of resuming work o, na him I go enter office steal money,
I left the school the following month.
My eyes have seen pepper with private schools o.

I looked back at the beginning of this year, precisely 14th January 2019 when I started working at a private primary school. Three weeks later, I was told that I had to be taking two primary five students extra lessons after closing (3pm), and the pay was 1k each. With my monthly salary which was 13,000 added to the "1k" each makes 15 thousand.

You would think I earned 13k for three months abi! No I didn't. The first salary I got was the half of 13k. The woman just called the staff on the 28th of January and gave me 6.5k. I had no idea what was going on and I thought she was going to balance up at the beginning of February just like she said while addressing us but it was a lie. it was at the end of the term, the third month April, that I got to know I am being ripped off. She said she was going to pay 5000 naira at the end of the term as salary because school opened for just 10 days. It was the greatest shock of my life. A graduate, a grown up man like me, taking 5000 naira home!!
I wanted to leave but I couldn't because I wouldn't be paid for the common entrance lesson and I had not gotten any other opportunities elsewhere.

Sometimes in early February, She called me that I would be handling primary 5 Common entrance lessons which is meant to hold every Saturday and at the end of the third term the money will be shared between Me, a staff that partners me and the proprietress. She said the money will be shared 60%(I and another man) to 40%(the proprietress). The formula was very unfair and strange to me. The sharing formula seemed very strange to me and I challenged it but she enforced it.

Fast forward to early this month, precisely 3rd of July, the proprietress started acting strange and insulting all the workers and all that. The following week she sent one of the oldest staff by to inquire what will be the staff reaction if they are not paid at the end if the term. The staff said they won't agree to such and some even threaten various actions. Fast forward to Thursday 25th of July, vacation day. the woman started up a plethora of complaints deliberately she said she was going to pay 4000 as July salary. The same thing she did at the end of second term. At the end she ended up not paying a dime. She didn't pay any of us. Not even the common entrance lesson which made me stay.

I cried and stayed inside throughout Friday. I had a deep thinking, with my academic background! Was it that I didn't know my worth? with all my struggles to be successful academically I am now slaving in one private school for a paltry sum of 15k, money wey I no fit cope with as an undergraduate! Money wey be say no reach my NYSC allawe!
I really feel for graduates going through phases like this. I really feel for graduates teaching at private schools. I pray better days finds you and I soon.

Hello Writer, I just laughed after reading your epistle because I once passed thru this phase of life. I was squatting with my sister in 2014 and teaching as well. But today, God changed my story for good... My advise to you is that you should keep pushing and never you forget God Almighty. Keep praying and ensure you pay your TITHE. Also, learn to sow dangerous seed and you will see things working for your favour. God bless you.

If all what you are saying is truth by the special grace of God I'll send you a link of another school that pays better at least more than 30k if you are qualified. Can you send me your whatsapp number?

My dear, my situation was worse than yours. But guess what?
I went on my knees regularly to God, and He turned the situation around. From getting sunbaked for a 30k salary to earning six figures.

I read from the beginning to the end. Too pathetic and disheartening. Well, SirWhiteFish, you have gotten all what you need as recommendations and advice on the next step forward. The problem is the enormous number of graduates and the few vacancies around, most of which are located in selected states. Unfortunately, the economy is not growing as it should. This coupled with difficulties to run a business in the country make business owners cut corners regarding staff welfare.

My best bet is for you to learn a coding related skill. Stutern is offering such currently (but is based in Lagos). Coding related skills, IMO, are the best to earn a reasonable income sustainably.

Op... I share in your experience .. Some 7 years ago.. I was made to teach agriculture from. Js1 to ss3.. A subject I last learnt in 1997 to 99.i also taught commerce and Econs ss1 to ss3.. All for peanuts.. I worked just a month before resignation for a better job..

On another note.. Employers or business men who carry religion on their head are the worst to work with or do business with.. Any one that works in the financial sector will confirm this..

Regarding the bold, I've mentioned several times offline and online: never ever do anything financially related with a religious person in Nigeria. The moment you are told: "I'm a God fearing person", run! Such persons are criminals! I've experienced gazillions of them and they possess same criminal characters. It's why I'm very wary of religious people in Nigeria.

@op, that's what we teachers see, as a graduate of pure and industrial chemistry, I handle 2core science subjects and 1 minor, at the end of the month it's story story. Right now am done,am not going back to that school, I dash them my 1.1/2 salary.

Sometimes I wonder if it's a curse on chemistry related courses, I also studied industrial chemistry.

Tbh with you, had it been someone told me I will end up being a teacher with a convincing prophecy and struggling for home tutorial to boost up, I will quit education after SSCE and dive into business.
I once teach in a private primary school were I was earning 15k, taking primary 1 to 5 and sometimes JSS1, all of them inside a class, the owner told me he will be helping me with some subjects but it was a ruse.

Better days ahead

Mobile Apps Development
Graphics Design.

Female school owners aka proprietress are very mean and wicked. Not generalizing though
I thought these women should be caring towards their fellow humans but they're even worse than their Male folks.
Well op should look for a skill to learn
I better do menial jobs that pays above 40k a month than to be a slave under someone cos I'm a graduate.
OP get your hands dirty and save a little money to start something.
God keep you bro

Most women are generally very wicked especially when their in the position on power. They tend to always want to oppress people and just show unnecessary power. They never want to see you do better. Go around and see how they treat employees, house maids , etc. They are just wicked but will be quick to cry yen yen yen if you give them quarter of what they do to others. As of na by force to own schools or even start business. They just want to be bosses and claim entrepreneur for mere show off. Many of them don't know nada.

Some private schools pay their staff well......It all depends on the location and state. I am working as a primary school teacher in a private school in Lagos and my salary is 60k.At the end of every mnth,i always earn at least 100k (home lessons included). If u ar interested in teaching, please try and avoid some areas.Places like Festac, Lekki , Ago-Palace pay their staff well and u can meet parents that are ready to pay as much as 30k as home lesson.

I can relate to what the OP is going through ,private schools are making cool cash but to pay or increase staff salary na wahala.....currently working in one of such school in OSUN STATE ,though they are very nice and salary is always on time but 15k is too small for a man to take home for 30 days of work.

I'm currently taking

Social studies : JSS1 -3

Computer studies : JSS 1-3 and SS 1 -3

All for 15k

At times ,I just sit down and think about my life cos the money I earn for 30 days of work won't last more than 2 weeks of the next month.

Seriously, Its a pure waste of time and energy.

Still trusting God to help me with something better . I do not wish to resume with the school by next term.
