I am interested in this robotics and artificial intelligence program.

I am a graphics designer with a newly found love programming. After enough research online, I have decided to start my programming journey with *Python* which is one of the most widely used programming language for AI and ML.

I am currently enrolled for an Introductory Python course by MIT on edx and would love to accelerate my learning by participating in your Robotics and AI program

To start with, is there like an android app that I can use for writing python code while I am not with my laptop

Regards

Cacawa2, please what's your advice for a Physics graduate with almost zero knowledge of programming (except Fortran and BASIC), who is interested in AI and seeks to build a career in that field?

Thank you.

Hi, nice development on the workshop. I am based in Ibadan, and I really wouldn't mind being involved as soon as your workshop is set.
Above average programming knowledge and I have had Machine Learning in mind for some time now. I hope I am welcomed.

Oh okay...okay...do you reckon there are many other people in Abuja who are interested in tech? I’m tempted to assume you’d not get much encouragement up there.

nice concept op. its great someone is taking the challenge in helping in embracing a.i and ml in nigeria. i pray your planning works well. waiting to see an update on your progress report and i will see how i can help too. Already completed courses on data science, ml and a.i.. i am currently a practicing data enigineer. and a key note also, pls consider cloud computing cos it will be most suitable in saving cost, safe and effective running of operations.

Ahh Tjay...first step is to refresh your statistics knowledge, in relations to probability, conditional probability, various methods of regression analysis (for predictive modelling).

Then proceed to know about python. Try see if you can use python Environment as a mathematical platform for performing the statistical analysis.
from earlier.

Later proceed to using open source libraries for machine learning (create a github account).

That’s for starters

Wow! What an amazing thread. This is the kind of threads where I will like to have a hangout.

I'm also interested in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

Are you aware of Data Science Nigeria AI Bootcamp?

I wrote an article about it. That's the link below. It might be a good way to start for beginners.

Yes I’m fully aware of DSN. Are you in any way involved in DSN? Maybe we could ask some questions about whether it is limited to only Unilag students and all.

Update: Just ignore me, the link you shared explains it in detail. Thanks

I have read most comments and only a few persons talked about building hardware. Are we going to talking about robotics and artificial intelligence without the hardware platform to run it? Is AI all about a PC, Apps or website alone? Nobody is talking about learning embedded systems that can house a small scale AI or robotic software to be used at home or wearable. Nobody is talking about IoT which makes u connect your home appliances to the internet and have a full control of it anywhere in d world. Nobody is talking about building a miniature wearable safety, security or health monitoring device Etc.

Its not only about machine learning or phython or Java etc. While all these are also important, i think we should start from the grassroot by creating our small computer-like device hardware using PIC, arduino etc, run our AI code on it, then later upgrade to a ready made platform like raspberry-pi then we can move further. AI and robotics is not neccessary a complex large software, it can be simple but intelligent device such as a line following robotic car or a weather monitoring device.

I think Nigerian technology is a joke, the reason is that, most IT or ICT company develop softwares that probably run on an existing operating system and hardware system. Many guys out there know how build apps and website that runs on an existing software or OS, many have not attempted building their own OS, even the apps they build has many built-in functions, methods, procedures and the likes. They wait for software updates before doing extraordinary things. I have never seen a company that develops AI software for an hardware they built. They end up importing all technologies and solutions and they say they are number one IT company in nigeria. People are CCNA, CCNP etc certified just to know how to connect hardware together and configure routers, nothing more.

Example is the Vehicle access control System at lekki, I stand to be corrected, All the equipments are built and programmed overseas, the installer just installed and configured. Even a simple traffic light system solution is imported. Will it be a bad thing if we can build all these hardware ourselves, develop softwares for them and configure.

We can learn from Steve Jobs of blessed memories who write software and also worked alongside with someone that builds hardware. Even though IBM has been making computers then, Jobs made his own personal computer which carries his own unique ideas. We can all see today that many similar devices cant match one made by Apple.

Guys, this is a challenge for us....lets not look at only the software aspect of robotics and AI, lets start building little hardwares too. We can start from somewhare.

I am sure I'll be speaking the minds of everyone on this thread when I say you are entirely right.

We all agree and want to learn the hardware (embedded systems) alongside the programming.

I agree that even the so-called programming many "experts" deploy is based on already existing libraries.

Now there is a good reason for that (such as: global standardisation... we have not seen the last of that yet...more discussion on that is coming).

Yet is is true that local content is best driven when we can actually build from ground level. Perhaps that way we can have our own "standardisation".

However to be fair, on this thread, there truly have been comments on embedded systems and hardware development and even IOT (in the first two pages). What must have caught the most of your attention is the retinue of comments such as ...."I am currently learning python..."

It only shows the skill gap we really and urgently need to fill-up.

The reason the centre I am setting up is called ROBOTICS and AI is that we are not just developing AI for the sake of the financial and marketing sector only. On the contrary, we are looking to deploy AI for Robotic systems, i.e. hardware systems to support infrastructure, agriculture and other needs. IOT is definitely a key component.

The workshop at the centre is specifically for Product Development.

Your comment was timely and beneficial. Kindly share with us how (hardware or software) you would be able to intervene, and in what capacity. Just so we know what background you are coming from.

Woow... Thats very good. Keep it on bro. These are the kind of things we need to boost our technology.

Unfortunately most gurus are after the financial aspect. If you tell the gurus to come together and build something, they will first ask you Whats in it for them to gain. I dont blame them either, because one have to put food on his table also. So, one of the solution is to sanitize our higher institution and have more practical curriculum. Our final year projects in school be a useful product and a solution to problems, not direct repitition of past project and something to be dumped in the school store.

Long time ago, I did a project for a final year student and to my surprise, the supervisor was so thrilled that he called me to do extra 10 pcs for him. I am not boosting but this is to challenge both the school system and the students out there on what is expected of them.

I work, learn and doing research myself also. I could help by answering questions on embedded systems both hardware and software in my little capacity.
