Is It Better To Live In Europe Than In The US? by ItuExchange(m): 5:31pm On Aug 09, 2019 |
Why is it better to live in the US rather than some European country? For my wife and me, there are only 2 direct benefits we obtain by living in the US compared to our previous home in Europe: We can jump into the car at a moment’s notice to rush to a loved one’s side, something we have had to do many times since our reinstallation in the US; [ETA in case it's not clear, this was our sole reason for leaving Europe and moving anew to the US. Second ETA because some people are still finding it difficult to parse: my wife and I were both born in the US where our families still live; while we lived in Europe, many of our loved ones either could not or were not willing to travel to see us and the frequent Transatlantic flights were taking their physical toll on us.] We can do our grocery and pharmacy shopping any day of the week and late into the evening. No, I’m not being snarky, those are really the only 2 benefits we perceive. Here are all the areas where we feel that we have sacrificed: My skills and experience were valued more highly in Europe than they are in the US, so I earn less in absolute terms (though I am still relatively well-paid).3 Thanks to extensive public services such as subsidized mass transit and universal healthcare, we had considerably higher disposable income in Europe than we do in the US. (Yes, you read that correctly, despite the prevailing narrative about high-tax “socialist” [sic] Europe.) Beyond the pure economic terms, our healthcare was extremely simple in Europe: we needed to see the doctor, we went to the doctor, unlike the US where we have to fight with the insurance process before seeing the doctor and then fight again afterwards to get the doctor’s bill paid. Food in the US consists of two categories: what is affordable and unhealthy, or what is healthy but boring and greatly overpriced. We miss being able to walk to useful destinations like doctors, merchants, the train station, etc. In the US we have to walk a full mile (without sidewalks of course) just to reach the outlet of our subdivision, and all that’s there is a small strip mall and some gas stations, with no safe way to even cross the street. The train station (at least we have one!) is 8 miles from home. As a result of having to drive more often and much longer distances, and despite the fact that each individual fill-up is less than half the cost as in Europe, we actually spend more per month on gasoline in the US. We dearly miss our 5-passenger “mini-minivan”, a model that doesn’t exist in the US, that got 40 mpg in town and 50+ on the highway while being very comfortable and spacious. We miss the social/cultural life — despite living in a small town of 15,000, there was an extremely active network of clubs, associations, and other organizations, all actively promoted by local government, across an extremely wide range of subjects and interests. We have had to work exceptionally hard in the US to find even a few similar activities, some of which we had to initiate ourselves, which was another ordeal, finding a location willing to host them — fortunately, the library in the next town is more open-minded about this sort of event than our local library. Very, very bad comparison. Europe is a Continent that consist of different Countries with their somewhat different laws and Cultures while the US is a Very Big Country consisting of different States with different State legislatives but all must try to obey the US Federal laws. 12 Likes 1 Share |

Depends on what country in Europe, personally I don't like the US lifestyle: gun laws, overt racism of law enforcement, having to drive long distances to get to anywhere decent, medical insurance and worst of all you only get 2 weeks (14 days) annual leave - this is why most Americans barely have time to visit home (9ja). Whereas in the UK you get 28 -32 days annual leave, flexible working, free healthcare & education, fast and efficient public transport, gun-less police etc.. I can't speak for other EU countries though. 7 Likes |

Even a dullard will know that living in Europe is better than living in United States of America. P.S - not all European countries 7 Likes 1 Share |

sweetmelanin:No one wants to die. If I'm to visit US this 2019, I'll go for very less popular states like Alaska, Peurto Rico, indiana, Vermont, Wisconsin etc not the California, Texas, Baltimore or even Pennsylvania. I know how many people that are close to me that lost their relatives between 2016 to 2019. Some of the cases were not reported in the news, but they cry out to us in private of bullying and eventual deaths of loved ones, especially blacks 6 Likes |

NONNYG: The rate at which people over hyped US is the main reason why he compared US with Europe. Another obvious reason is the economy of US. Observation mode activated 1 Like |

NONNYG: One can't blame him though. It's the likes of CNN going international and talking about everything under the sun and in the rocks airing all the things that happen in the US. How many of any of the European countries have constant news coverage 24 hours round the clock exposing all the events be it good or bad about their country the way CNN does about the US? 2 Likes |

Beautyaddy:yes i live in Europe, not just any country, but the heart and heart beat of Europe. And i can tell you, i feel safe, guns are hard to comeby, i was never a night crawler, but here you can walk and use the trains whenever. I won't say it is 100% safe, but it is sure better than the US. Then you have the health insurance policy, the US is a no no for me. 8 Likes |

NONNYG:The US as they say is an overhyped country. How can you explain, the extreme poverty amongst its citizen, the wage gap difference between the rich and poor, humans living in gehttos just like Nigeria. And besides not all roads are tarred, you have bad roads too,.......... See i can Go on and on. The American Media has helped portray the US to be a paradise as a Sort, but in reality, life is harsh over there. 6 Likes |

willy2000: life is harsh every where even the Europe that you think is good, is walking on thin ice the generous welfare state has pushed many EU States to the brink a part from Germany and a few others some of them will fall off totally in the coming decade's America on the other hand can do better but it's still the land to be in anyways 4 Likes |

Ugosample: True! Life is harsh everywhere. But we can not compare the harshness of some region/continent to another. If Europe is walking on thin ice, then the US is no longer walking but falling Do you know the amount of US citizens with Student debt loans, how many Americans can boast of a total health coverage insurance? America like you said can do better, but Europe will fall off totally in the coming decade, can you see how biased this is. The US is the Land to be if you want to live in debts/paycheck to paycheck. 6 Likes |
