Here in Madagascar, we pay about #33 per kw. why must the poor masses pay for their incompetence, while govt agencies and private cooperation are owning them a lot of electricity bills |

AK481:You read your market structure in economics and at the same time supporting price control. Why not allow the gencos and discos to charge "market" price and see if you would be able to afford electric power. Dangote and the steel companies alone would mop up all the power allocated to ikorodu and would be ready to pay N60/kwh. The 4000MW generated and transmitted by all the gencos and transcos is not even enough for logos alone. 1 Like |

government involvement in all the sphere of national economy is so so wrong..... bubu has again claimed the minister of petroleum.... please to what end? if govt can remove their hands and allow the national income to distribute itself, nobody will complain, but they will take over everything, allot the money therein to themselves and their cronies and throw peanuts to the masses. |

Naijafull19:That means that it is impossible to determine the DISCOS profit margin. We can only rely on what they tell us. BTW, theoretically, the more electricity they sell, the more should be their profits. Unfortunately, they found that with estimated billings, they can make eye boggling profits hence they reject power from the GENCOS. And we have a useless Government that doesn't care a hoot. Many of those in power own most of these corporations hence hence, they are driven by profit rather than service to the nation |

Naijafull19: While I won't want to dabble into the issue of prod and cons of different type govt, I will just want to remind you that even the Americans have consistently used socialist instrument to govern its people. Subsidy is a socialist tool in governance. Now to the main crux of the matter, an increment in power consumption could spiral and push Nigeria back into recession as it would adversely affect the manufacturing sector of the economy. The cost of doing business in Nigeria is on the high side, increasing the electricity tariff would place a heavy burden on the manufacturing companies and this would in turn affect the cost of goods and services in Nigeria. Also we should remember that even at the present rate provision of electricity is still shady has most consumer have professed that they are paying for darkness. I accept your point of argument that electricity is far cheaper that what we are paying for, but you should remember that even minimum wage isn't reflective of what workers are supposed to earn, therefore overburdened would result to stealing in fact they have all been doing this while government looks the other way. |

Re: Nigerians To Pay More For Electricity Consumption by wirinet(m): 7:35pm On Aug 22, 2019 |
walexbiz: Wrong premise. You are obviously not a business man, else you will understand that providing power through generator is extremely expensive. When my small office was being billed with estimated billing, I was being billed an average of N10,000 - N15,000 per month despite not having power 60% of the time. Sometimes the transformer would be down for 2 weeks, but the bill never reduces. As a result, I spend an average of N15,000 per week on petrol for the generator, apart from other maintenance costs. I fought tooth and nail for pre paid metre, after the installation of pre paid meter, a N10,000 recharge takes me a minimum of 3 months. You think I will not jump for joy if I was asked to pay 3 times the current charges but will have power 24 7. PZ and other heavy industries run their generators 24 7, because, their heavy machines cannot handle power fluctuations. MTN masts are sometimes run on diesel 24 7 with 2 generators on every Base station. You think MTN would not jump for joy if you ask them to pay 5 times the current charges. Cost of doing business will actually come down if tariff is increased but the light is constant and not having to running your business on generator. 1 Like |

krattoss:i pay 16 eur in a month in Germany and the minimum wage is 1300 after tax. A lot of countries has cheap electricity bill and it’s constant, but in Nigeria you hardly see 10hours power supply in a day and yet it’s way way expensive when compared to the minimum way. Inflation in Nigeria is way too high, how do people survive? Why can’t government supply pay as you go meters? I really Hate the country Nigeria. |

Re: Nigerians To Pay More For Electricity Consumption by DeOTR: 3:00am On Aug 23, 2019 |
Naijafull19:Before they stop price control, it is imperative that the DISCOS live up to their responsibilities. I mean people still still contribute to install electrical equipments in Nigeria. From transformers, poles, wires, I to even having to pay DISCOS for installations and repairs, something that supposed to be their responsibilities. You can't expect a neighborhood to purchase its own transformer while you, a private company, get paid. This is business, and investments in infrastructure is key. Making prepaid meters available is also important before hiking the tariff, otherwise most homes will be getting bills for living in darkness and these so called DISCOS will claim Nigerians are owing them. Why should anyone pay N11500 monthly for nothing at all? Nigerian homes are not charity organizations na. The DISCOS are rejecting loads from the GENCOS. Do the consumers have the privilege to reject the estimated loads the DISCOS are passing to them? |

Naijafull19:Is it customers' money alone that would be used to raise generation to 40000MW and expand the transmission system? There is no where in the world that such is practised. Let them fix those challenges first b4 hiking electricity tariffs. |
Re: Nigerians To Pay More For Electricity Consumption by Nobody: 7:59am On Aug 23, 2019 |
Great2017: Oh yes, it is CUSTOMER'S money. That's how businesses are run. You take your money from your customer...what the customer invests into your business by paying for goods and services...and use it to improve services to your customer, pay staff salaries, etc.. That's why when GEJ was privatising power, he gave opportunity to Nigerians to come and say no. We all kept quiet. Now the deed has beeen done, and if the current government tries to reverse it it would cost them billions of naira. How do you think the GSM companies built all those infrastructure like antenna, cable network, etc.....it was largely from funds taken from the money we pay to recharge our phones. Or you think they take our money and put it in some big vault in Switzerland ?? |
Re: Nigerians To Pay More For Electricity Consumption by Great2017: 9:07am On Aug 23, 2019 |
Naijafull19:It is only in Nigeria that Government collude with fraudsters that called themselves investors to rob her citizens. It is never done in civilized world. I challenge you to mention one. Any party to an investment shares in the profit or loss as the case may be. And there is usually a documented proof detailing the terms of the investments. What you just called investment falls short of these. Rather, it is collusion with Government to steal from Nigerians. The GSM companies built those infrastructures from their capital and loans as well as from the astronomical profit generated in connivance with a corrupt Nigeria Government. If the Nigeria Government is not culpable, why are they not declaring huge profits in other clime? It is not the responsibility of customers to buy transformers, cables, meters, etcetera. Their responsibility is to pay for goods and services rendered at a good price. Paying for far more than the value they get is stealing by trick. On the other hand it is the responbility of investors to make adequate investments to ensure that customers get value for their money. Sincere Governments do not allow any abuse of responsibilities. The business of power supply is a long term business because of the huge investments needed. It is not expected to break-even within few years of operation. Otherwise, customers will always be shortchanged through outrageous tariffs and the investors will keep reeling out unimaginable profit margins. Investors must make adequate investments to guarantee reliable supply. It is not customers' money taken by trick that should serve that purpose. Unfortunately, our Government is allowing this anomaly. And sad enough, what you call business is only business in Nigeria. 1 Like |

Great2017: Then don't vote for PDP, APC....vote for a Marxist Lenninist Party, or form one yourself. End all private ownership. Don't let anyone run a business. Everything belongs to the State. No profits, everything is ad mininstered by the state. The problem with your comment is, you want socialism only when it benefits you. If you were running a buisness yourself, you won't accept government price controls. You would call the government evil. Yet you want price controls on companies because they are greedy. If you were in charge, the job shortages would be very very severe. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Economics is not a matter of 'somebody gives you ready made'. |

Re: Nigerians To Pay More For Electricity Consumption by walexbiz(m): 12:48pm On Aug 23, 2019 |
wirinet: I left out the most important issue yesterday because I was tired when I was responding to the comment, you see there is strong apathy for customer to pay for electricity because most of the Discos have refused to meter their esteem customer and they have resulted to dishing out estimates billing at the customer peril so they feel cheated each time they are issued monthly bills on estimated basis. also most of the disco don't have antecedent in running an electricity distribution, they just bought the company because they were friends to government of the day. After buying they then realised they have made a very big mistake because they don't have technical and financial capacity to keep it running that's why they have been issuesand always putting the blame of the electricity on government and the customer. metering will resolve the 80% issue of the discos are facing, Shikena. |
