GistMore7:
A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Minna on Tuesday ordered that a student, Suleman Ayuba, 19, who pleaded guilty to attempted suicide by taking rat poison, be remanded in prison, pending sentencing.

Magistrate Hauwa Yusuf, who gave the order after Ayuba pleaded guilty, fixed Sept. 16 for sentencing.

Ayuba, who resides in Ungwan Daji, Minna, was charged with attempted suicide, contrary to the provisions of Section 231 of the Penal Code Law of Niger State.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, ASP Daniel Ikwoche, told the court that one Badamosi Abdullahi reported the matter on Aug 23.

Ikwoche said the complainant, a noodles seller, alleged that on the same day at about 7 p.m., the defendant bought some and poured a pack of poison in it and ate it.

He said that the defendant became unconscious afterwards and was taken to the hospital where he was revived.

When the charges were read to him, Ayuba pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

”I wanted to take my life because life is too hard for me as an orphan,” he told the court.

Remanding someone who wants to commit suicide in prison? This is a perfect example of "just because its the law ,doesn't make it right". Is this what will solve his depression? like why is it even a crime to commit suicide, still finding the logic behind this law undecided.
This guy should be talking to a therapist, i mean wont that be cheaper than paying lawyers to prosecute him and even feed him in prison? Lawd! This is so unreasonable angry

and you think the best solution is to lock up a person who want to harm themselves? They might as well use a bedsheet to hang themselves in prison. Someone says things are too hard for him and you want to subject him to the terrible Nigerian prison.

The young man needs a therapist not prison cell.

Depression is rampant among many Nigerian youths especially in this tough economy and most can't seek help even from their family or friends. To make it worse, there's not a lot of effort put in to spread awareness of depression and it's repercussions

Backward country

smh.. and sentencing him is the solution. you are only making his life harder there by making the situation worse.. the guy will still die of depression in the prison.. useless judge.. people wey them suppose send go prison dem go dey give them bail... many of this judges get special place in Hell reserved for them and Satan go personally take his time in tormenting them himself..

I believe this law was done in 1960 using the British law as a template ,but guess what ,the Britons have long borrowed sense and change this unreasonable and illogical law.

It's a crime to commit suicide cos u belong to the government
Until they kill u by law
U have no right to kill yourself
