midnighter:False comparison? I don't even know where you are driving but let me tell you, you can't defend Nigeria without looking stupid(I'm not saying you are stupid) How much is Nigeria's budget for education and how is that of Canada? How much is Nigeria's cost of governance and how much is that of Canada? do the comparison and see the kind of country you are trying to defend. A country still operating military constitution while they deceive themselves with democracy 1 Like 1 Share |

ZZ22: I already said I'm not defending it, yes if you compare things relative to those factors you have in mind, you will get to the truth |

pansophist: It is due to per capita income. Per capita for Norway - 62,000 dollars. Per capita income Nigeria - 5,887 dollars. Per capita income (PCI) or average incomemeasures the average income earned per person in a given area (city, region, country, etc.) in a specified year. It is calculated by dividing the area's total income by its total population. Please, don't say anything slick. Just digest these figures then ask critical questions. |

nuelyoyo: Lets start with what you have up there, it is a wrong assumptions to think that education in Nigeria is more stressful that education system in Canada or the western world, let's not get it twisted, it is hard to be a student in Canada than you think, as a student in higher institution, i will expect you to start learning about time management and if you are not able to add working with your studies, how would you learn time management? Besides, in a nation where schools are out for months due to strike, i find it hard to believe that a student can't add work with schooling, now tell me if students can have time partying and flexing. Please correct me if i am wrong, how do a student find time for cultism but can't find time to work, and by the way there are few jobs in Nigeria that can help a student fund his or her education Nigeria is a place where ladies do their hair on a weekly basis, so what stop a lady from learning how to do hair and get paid doing for her friends on weekends or as time permits What stops a gentleman learning how to cut hair and do such for his friends when he is free and use the money to take care of his education. This is one of the reasons why i blame the parents, paying for them all the way doesn't denote love but sometimes denote destroying the creativity of that child 2 Likes |

bizhop01:Let me reply on his behalf. Local students pay about $6K per year. That is 1.5million naira. Foreign students pay 3x of that amount. For a four or 5 years course, that is still alot of money. You pay for what you get. You can't compare a quality brand to dollarstore brand. |

Fhemmmy:Some actually do it but not much. I had some classmate that worked summer jobs while we studied at OAU. They are doing very well now. Some being director/managers in multinationals home and abroad. My wife worked summer jobs despite studying one of the most difficult course at OAU. The ponmo mentality is real as you can read some of the comments on this thread I usually avoid front page threads on nairaland as it brings out all the mad boys and girls out on nairaland. If I had known this will hit front-page, I would have just read op's post and waka pass. |

nuelyoyo: Again, i totally disagree, if you give loans to student in Nigeria, no matter what kinda job that student got after graduation, he or she will do almost anything o avoid payment and that is because we are not credit worthy {same reasons why someone billionaires names appears yearly in the paper for owing the banks and not wanting to pay back, that is part of what we need to learn and remember that NO ONE OWE US. By the way, you will be surprised to know that lots of students in the western world are done with schooling and can't find a job, some have had to take up low paying job just to move on, but Nigerian students will wanna wait till they find a job in their field and guess what, no one want to hire new grad in most cases because of lack of experience. 4 Likes |

salford1: You are very right and it is sad and painful to know that these are the future of Nigeria while this made me to see the reasons why we keep going in circle and why the leaders don't even give a damn, like someone said that Nigeria is a nation being rules by animals. 1 Like 1 Share |

Fhemmmy: Nigeria has high levels of poverty, this is a fact. As there are students in serious need of upgraded facilities, there are also millions of Nigerian kids who can't even go to school. So this problem has to be tackled otherwise the country would be in even more trouble. 1 Like |

nairalandposter: And with the mentality that we have, it will keep getting worse, people need to start to learn how to create opportunities and not wait for one, people needs to get out of their comfort zones and not wait for dada and mama to take care of them . . . Poverty sometimes supposed to be a tool that will move you into making things happen, and not to push you to a "Poor me" mentality . . .Bros, where there is no problem, there won't be opportunities for progress |

MuhMubRaj:This is right. My family doctor here grad from a Nigerian uni, my pharmacist (who happens to be the the manager of her store and also my wife) all graduated from a Naija uni. Same as myself. Great we all got our degrees for dirt cheap cost. One day Naija no better. But when we as Nigerians start changing our ways. The same government we love to slam, we are still the government. Until we ourselves change from our corrupt manners, nothing is gonna change. 2 Likes |

GavelSlam: False equivalence. Firstly, per capita amount means nothing when a country is determined to improve itself. For example, the per capita for Americans is bigger than Swedish, but Sweden has free education and healthcare for its citizens, while American students are saddled with debt, ranging from over 35,000 USD on average, and more citizens files for bankruptcy yearly due to medical bills than any country in the world. Using your logic, how can you explain that? Furthermore (as this paragraph succinctly deals with your point), Nigeria has a higher GDP than some European countries such as Ukraine, though, Ukrainians study for free, and has been a top destination for student all over the world to study at their top-quality education. Nairaland is filled with threads about studying in Ukraine. Ukrainian classrooms look similar to the Canadian own, so what's your point? Even if Nigeria suddenly have the highest GDP per capita right now, with the government and structure in place, it will only descend lower, instead of uplift itself higher. Most importantly, the present-day Nigerian GDP being low to Norwegian is as a result of bad governance. Norwegian GDP is one of the lowest in the developed world just 40 years ago, lower than Nigeria presently, but built itself up. How about that? You tried to make sense but actually didn't. And your answer is decorated with pride like you are schooling some ignorant stranger. Don't be rude, drop your point, without the unnecessary addendum such as, ''please do not say anything slick''. Arrogance is repugnant 12 Likes 3 Shares |
