This closure will send many business men back to village, some to early grave . But I think it's Okay, let the farmers enjoy their labour and, it 'll make farming attractive

That's if Fulani herdsmen and others allow them

The price of a bag of rice is going to hit 50k by December. The idea of Nigeria producing rice is like the Army defeating Boko Haram. All na propaganda.

Buhari should as a matter of urgency open the borders if they cannot provide alternative to curb the high cost of rice.

Nonsense!!
Nigeria can defeat Boko Haram, but Buhari cannot, please make that distinction.
Buhari has never and is now clearly obvious, will never have the capacity to provide any kind of proper governance, except that based on bigotry and Islamic fundamentalism, because he lacks the capacity to do so.

I prefer to buy a bag of a local rice at any price. Wisdom is, I'm enriching my fellow countrymen. Take it or leave it Nigeria must strive.

God bless you! You have a better understanding of the economic dynamics of this border closure than people who are fixated on pricing alone.

At least, when we patronize our local farmers and manufacturers, we will end up growing our economy.

Conversely, when we buy the smuggled products we shrink the economy; we cannot continue to haemorrage the economy of the country and expect any meaningful growth and development.

I learnt that one of the smuggling groups who specializes in rice buys about N500m worth of rice every week before the border closure and I was told that this is one of several groups (from the same source there are more than 20 groups - meaning that our economy loses at least N10billion weekly to smuggling of rice and it could be more if there are more than 20 smuggling groups even if we leave out individual smugglers).

Modified:
And I am thinking, how beneficial it would be if we could lock in the money expended on smuggling rice in Nigeria - at least we would be growing our economy by N10billion per week for preventing rice smuggling alone.

Ultimately farmers would smile to the bank, more people would be attracted to produce rice, our gdp and per capita income will witness positive changes, supply will grow and then prices will fall.

If you can't comprehend why the price of goods and farm product are on the rise, what statistic are you giving, you have no idea.

You lot just want to make money, damn the consequence on the nation! Let them open the border, let you export subsided crude oil to neighboring countries, its our money, its our oil, but you want the government to fix your road, you want infrastructural development, you complain all day about the worse thing that you see, you commend the white but forget most of the things you see over there is because they made some sacrifice, you don't care, we have oil why should we pay tax? Its like the government should sell the oil and send the money to your account.

No country can progress without sacrifice, if we don't start now, a time will come it will be too late, even Benin republic will be rubbing shoulders with us in terms of development.

Most of those criticising Buhari for closing the border against smuggled rice are the same people insulting him for purportedly not patronising Innoson.

They are very very unintelligent people.

My friend you dont understand the market! Supply and competition will bring down the price eventually and Nigeria will be food independent. Lastly, why would you need a whole bag of maize?? How many children do you have?? Only manufacturing companies use bags of maize.

The incease on food at mamaput will be miniscule..

Nigeria government, day light robbery without mask. While will you close border without alternative. If the alternative is for farmers to start producing to sustain Nigeria then give farmer time, know how many tons we produce with reference to importation then price comparison and conclude.

Beremx, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

If you had a farm or you were productive in your life, you won't be here typing nonsense.

We're trying to promote Innoson and Aba goods. Abakaliki rice is receiving increased patronage but you talk down the produce of your land because you support a Fulani man from Cameroun.

I used to think you had a little sense left but even Atiku your paymaster won't be saying this nonsense because he's also a farmer and this border closure helps his business.

I read through many comments and am surprised some people will support government action, nobody is against closure of land border but we should first of all ask ourselves this question" what is government provision to easy Nigerian". How many tonnes of rice did we have in storage, have government gotten good milling machine? And how self-sufficient are we already? If that government have done their home work very well importation of rice will die naturally. If they subsidy it to farmer and is selling cheap, Nigerians will buy and by next we will have enough. This suffering is much, God should save us from wrong policy in this country, fire approach policy

Excellent observation.

The ripple effect of closing the border will create more jobs. Most of my staff are farmers I recruited from the north and trained then to become mechanics, most of the Okada riders in most cities are farmers from the north and middle belt, when the hear farming has become more rewarding they will go back to the farms.

All the govt needs to do is invest in technology that makes farming easier , and also a tax free environment for investors in agriculture.

With time food sufficiency will not be a problem.

Nigeria is the only country where locally made things are always more expensive than the imported ones and not just that it also goes to the level of low quality. Despite loans from banks and government, concessions from government they still inflate their prices. You are dancing to bank credit alert while your consumers are crying to heavy weight debit alert. How can a locally grown maize be sold for 9k when the imported ones that will pay custom duty sell for lower price and at a good quality which might even be higher than local ones and you want me to waste money on local ones. Imagine Inosson selling his SUV which is not suppose to go for more than 15Million Naira for 30Million Naira, now I see why Nigerians are not patronizing him. Where is Zinox Computers today, the only organization that will always patronize them is the government and it's because the government officials see them as a means of siphoning the public funds. Please every upcoming entrepreneur should always remember that there is a very strong competition in every market, you are either competing with the outsiders or your fellow insiders, so therefore be ready to satisfy your customers if it does not cost you much rather than fighting for yourself alone cuz different kinds of government will go and come, the one of today might be favouring your business, who knows the one that will cone tomorrow. Just be strategical in your dealings in your different industries. Wishing everyone a Profitable Monday.

I thought that this border closure is against ECOWAS rule,I thought that in ecowas member countries there is free movement of goods and services within the member states.

So they have been deceiving theirselves all this while in ECOWAS.

Every country has list of contraband goods and importation policy which international organization laws can never supersede. Im very sure ECOWAS free movement policy will never support smuggling try and find out.

ECOWAS free movement of goods and people does not amount to illegal immigration and smuggling. It doesn't mean that you could enter any west African countries without some level of documentation.

More so national interest comes first. A country will join international organization to achieve national interest, they opt out of any agreement that's no longer aiding there national interest.

Countries are not to serve the interest of international organization but the other way round. And if an international organization law or policy is no longer useful it will abandoned that is how serious countries behave but Nigeria has not been doing that all in the name of useless big brother role which makes many countries to desrespect us and maltreat our citizens abroad because they believe that Nigeria has no policy anything goes with them.

but why will the locally made rice be far more expensive than the foreign rice? I have no problem with closing the borders, but to think that hypocrites/zombies who criticized innoson motors for the price of his Nigeria assembled cars are the same sets singing praises of the border closure without pointing at the astronomical cost is a clear admission that "might is right" in this primitive enclave, things must continue to get worst as long as majority continue to side with the devil
