I have been pondering on creating this thread for a while but because of my schedule, I had to postpone it and have been postponing it until today.

My name is Kenneth popularly known as intelligentdude. I am a Career Consultant and a recruiting personnel (Talent Acquisition Coach)with Intelligentdude Consult. Over the years,I have had interactions with a good number of graduates/corp members who are yet to define their career path even after graduation and most of them wander around not knowing what to do.

While working as a Human Resource Personnel/Admin. in one of the top web design and branding organizations in Lagos,I came in contact with graduates who were yearning to be properly guided in their career path so as not to spend their years in futility. Moreso,in the course of me writing/rewriting Curriculum Vitae(CV)for a good number of applicants,I have come to realize that most graduates need professional guidance in their career path.

While education is very important,it is expedient that graduates/corp members acquire the necessary skills in their area of study/interest/passion. Employers prefer those who do not only have certificate but possess sabificate. Sabificate simply means what you can do (wetin you sabi).

NYSC year is a year that can make or mar you depending on how you choose to utilize it. A good number of Corp members finish their youth service without acquiring any relevant skill which can help them transit quickly and successfully into the labour market. A graduate of Electrical Engineering who is posted to a Secondary School or Local Government can attach himself to an Electrician just to deepen his practical knowledge and experience.

Please understand, you can learn a profitable skill from anyone notwithstanding if he/she is an illiterate or literate. A graduate of Mechanical Engineering can volunteer to go worth with the seemingly illiterate Mechanics in his/her domain just to acquire the needed Technical skill and experience.
There are different opportunities one can take advantage of while serving to acquire needed skills and experience which will surely come to play while job hunting.

Starting a career in can be fairly straightforward. You pick an area of focus, learn it, and eventually find someone to hire you to do that type of work. As you grow, though, the path forward can become much less clear.

As a graduate of Computer Science, there are different career paths you can follow and this should inform your decision in the type of skills to acquire/learn and also the professional trainings you should undergo and the certifications you should possess.

As a graduate of Computer Science, you can pursue a Career as a:
1) Software Developer
2)Hardware Engineer
3) Web developer
4)Business Analyst
5)Quality Assurance Manager
6)Database Administrator
7)Network Administrator
viii)Security Analyst
9) IT Architect
10)Video Game Developer
11) Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Engineer
12)Data Scientist
13)Cloud Computing Engineer
14)Research and Development Scientist

Not only are computer science degrees needed for a number of applications across nearly every industry, but the total number of computer science jobs has also been steadily increasing. Those who did not study Computer Science in their undergraduate days are now coming onboard to learn and acquire IT Skills.

For those serving in fairly remote areas, if you would like to acquire a skill which can pay your bills, then you might want to consider Laptop repairs, phone repairs,Digital Marketing,Graphics, etc.

Task: Feel free to state the course you read or the career path you want to follow so I can counsel you on the professional trainings to undergo, the certificates to acquire etc.

Hello. First of all I will be talking about the places you can fit in as a Science Laboratory Technologist before addressing your question.

As a Science Laboratory Technologist, you can work in a Medical, Pharmaceutical, and Biotechnological laboratory.

You can choose a career as a :
1)Laboratory Technician
2)Clinical Laboratory Scientist
3)Pathologist
4)Radiologic Technologist
5)Biological Technician
6)Chemical Technician
7) Crime Laboratory/Forensic
iv)Quality Assurance Personnel

To your question, first you need to decide which area you will like to specialize in.

But for those who studied Medical Laboratory Science/Technology,you can build a Career in Clinical Analysis : Chemistry,Microbiology,Immunology,Hematology? or a career in Public health :Health radiation science, crime laboratory/forensic,Environmental health,Epidemiology? or a career in Research :Bio-engineering,cell biology? or a Career as an Administrator/Educator : Academic administrator,Hospital administrator, laboratory director etc.

Hello, okay just to put this in perspective,I know a dude who is a skilled web designer/developer and he is yet to see the four walls of a University. Learning Web Development is majorly a thing of interest and passion. I would advice you register with a good Web design/development school in your location, the idea is so you stay motivated when you see others who also want to learn. However,it is possible to self teach yourself but that will require a great deal of commitment and discipline.

As regard your interest in Human Resource,I would advice you focus on either web development or Human Resource. It is not advisable to pursue both simultaneously.

If you must build a career in Human Resources, you must get the necessary qualifications such as CIPM (Chartered Institute of Personnel Management)and The Institute for Human Resources which specializes in IHR certifications.

Hello,am an Under G student of Telecommunication Engineering at Futminna(HCIA certified,CCNA loading )_your advice pls.

Hi, great step you are already taking by preparing to do some professional courses but I am wondering the Career path you want to follow.

Do you want to be a Telecoms Engineer or a Networking Engineer?

Sure CCNA is a good foundation for both career paths.

Telecommunication is a vast field with electronic, as compared to computer software , and other fields of mechanical and other engineering stream , there are many good career scope in the field of electronics and telecommunication.
Some of the career paths are:
Radio Frequency(RF) Engineer
Transmission Engineer
Network Designer
Network Manager
Product Manager

Aside what you learnt in the University, you can take advantage of some trainings while serving inorder to be better equipped; trainings that will equip you with skillset needed to plan, design and deploy an RF network, set up a point-to-point microwave link, install and configure base station equipment, install and configure 2G, 3G and 4G telecom equipment from Vendors like Huawei and Ericsson, implement Rf drive-test and optimization on 3G and 4G networks, etc.
A career in the telecommunications industry is suitable for highly skilled and dedicated individuals with an aptitude and interest towards modern communication methods.

However,it’s a good time to consider a career in Network Engineering. Network engineers get the opportunity to work in almost any industry alongside a team of skilled IT professionals. And with more companies making the shift to big data, cloud computing and social media, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a steady growth in the demand for network engineers and system architects. I have some friends who are CCIE holders and working with Amazon. I also have a good number of friends who have passed the theoretical part of CCIE(meaning they are done with CCNA,all the CCNPs and want to build a career as a Network Architect).

As an aspiring Network Engineer, take the time to master the core concepts of networking to ensure you have the right foundation. Expand your knowledge on areas like subnetting, spanning-tree and ARP before taking on advanced components like BGP route reflectors.

Hello Haryanf7
A degree in statistics will lead to opportunities all over the world! Statisticians have a unique set of analytical skills that make them valuable in almost every area of industry and science.

With a degree in Statistics, you could work in:

Computing: As a statistician, you could work in software design and development to create code and analytics platforms that are both user-friendly and statistically robust.

Engineering: Statisticians use principles of hypothesis testing and quality assurance to make consistent products, detect production problems, and predict product life in electronics, chemicals, transportation, and construction.

Marketing: Statisticians design experiments for evaluating new products and conduct focus groups and sample surveys to gauge customer opinions. They may also perform field experiments in new markets to determine demand for a certain product.

Computational biology/bioinformatics: Biologists produce petabytes of data to find cure for cancer and to breed more valuable animals and plants. They need statisticians and computer scientists to design, evaluate and interpret their experiments and to read DNA the blueprint of our lives!

Consulting: As a statistician, you may be approached to work on a temporary basis solving new and unique problems for a client.

Survey methods: Statisticians collect and interpret survey data from social sciences, education, law, forestry, agriculture, biology, medicine, and business.

Epidemiology: Statistical prediction is vital to epidemiology! Statistics is used to calculate disease incidence rates and monitor outbreaks, and track changes in health-related behaviors.

Agriculture: Statisticians study the effectiveness of chemical pesticides and crop management techniques to ensure optimal yield.

Ecology: Statisticians use evolving data to address questions about the natural world, often in partnership with scientists working in the field.

Information Technology(IT)Career Path

Information Technology (IT) continues to change our way of living, playing, and doing business, so it should come as no surprise that computing and IT is the fastest-growing career field and will continue to be in the future.

The dominance of the IT job market is due to numerous factors, including rapid Internet and e-commerce growth, lower hardware prices that enable more businesses to upgrade their technology.

Your first move in building a career is to understand the current IT career landscape; here are some of the most sought-after IT career paths based on earning power, growth potential, job outlook and excitement.

In-Demand IT Careers:

1) Mobile Developer
What do they do?
The people who build applications for businesses are mobile developers. If you've ever used a device from Android or iOS, you've interacted directly with the work of a mobile developer. Other mobile development platforms such as Windows phone are available. But most people are most likely talking about an Android or iOS app when they say "Web App."

How do I get started?
This depends on whether you're going to focus on iOS or Android. It is adviceable to learn Android. Java is likely a more valuable language to learn than Swift and Objective-C and the fact that 75% of the world is using Android against 21% using iOS.

2. Database Administrator
Database administrators ensure that business data is accurate, available and secure.

Database administrators can continue to learn and advance their career by getting certified in one or more database management systems (DBMS); in-demand DBMS include Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2 & MySQL.

3. Web Developer
Web developers build the web pages and web-based applications that comprise the Internet.

Successful web developers are fluent in the programming languages that fuel the World Wide Web. All web developers need a command of HTML, Javascript & CSS. It's also helpful to know a server-side programming language, such as PHP, Microsoft .Net Visual Basic, or Java to develop more complex applications.

4. Help Desk Technician ; a.k.a. Desktop Support Technician | Technical Support Specialist | Computer Support Engineer | IT Support Specialist | Field Service Technician | Desktop Support Analyst.

Help Desk Technicians provide technical support for IT end-users.
Many IT pros begin their career as help desk technicians because of the low experience and education requirements, then as they're exposed to new IT disciplines and technologies they discover their niche and branch out into other IT careers, such as network administrator, DBA or IT security specialist.

5. Software Engineer
Software engineers design, develop and improve upon the computer programs we use every day, including business apps, operating systems, network control systems and social networks. Software engineers can be divided into two main classifications: Applications Software Engineers and Systems Software Engineers.

Applications software engineers analyze an end-user's needs and develop a custom program to meet those needs. They use a range of programming languages depending on the application's parameters and the platform on which the program runs. Modern languages used by applications software engineers include Java, C, C++, PHP, Objective-C, Perl and Python. Mobile app developers are specialized applications software engineers who create apps for smartphones and tablets.

Systems software engineers coordinate the creation, maintenance and expansion of an organization's internal computer systems. Systems software engineers may also be responsible for developing a company's intranet and ensuring system security.

6. Cloud Engineer
Cloud engineers plan, develop and support organizations' rapidly growing cache of cloud computing(the on-demand, pay-as-you-go distribution of IT resources over the Internet. ) solutions.

7. Data Scientist
Data Scientists analyze business data for actionable intelligence.

Data scientists mine and analyze data from a range of sources, including customer transactions, click streams, sensors, social media, log files and GPS plots. Their mission is to unlock valuable and predictive insights that will influence business decisions and spur a competitive advantage.
