There is everything wrong with it. Why must we buy it a high price in the first place? The whole idea of limiting importation of foreign rice is to boost the local production. It makes no sense that we are buying the locally made rice at a higher price when we can buy the foreign counterpart at a lower. They need to give the farmers more incentives to produce at a lower cost instead of making policies that is making life harder than it already is for the average Nigerian.
do u even know that local rice was cheaper than foreign rice before d border closure? do u even know that most northerners eat Nigerian stone-free rice before all these rice wahala?

Calm down, Madam...... price of local rice will come down once it saturates d market.

Abeg what's so difficult for Nigeria farmers to get a better seed from wherever they can, plant here, parboil and give us good rice? Everything na rocket science for naija.

Imagine using local rice to make fried rice, lol

I've tried it with Mama Pride by Olam foods. It was nice!

We live in animal kingdom where anything goes. The government cannot close border or ban importation of highly demanded good outrightly without putting measures in place to meet it's demand.
First, it was OBJ regime that first ban importation of rice, used cars and used clothes without providing alternatives for the teaming population of Nigeria.
What did we gain from that exercise, nothing, absolute nothing. Demand for these products made the importers to use Benin ports to import these goods and smuggle them back to Nigeria through our porous borders.
Yaradua took over and relaxed OBJ ban but the importers keep using Benin Port for their importation as is cheaper for them.
The truth is that Nigerian government is the problem not Benin or Niger you don't mess around with these countries policies but Nigerian government are never sincere in their policies especially when it concerns the citizens that's why most people flaunts government policies especially when it comes to the public.
All of you hailing this administration on border closure are jus being narrow minded, we should be demanding government commitment in helping to make the production of the banned goods possible, cheaper and affordable.

By the way, we should all remember that goods can still be imported through our ports and by air. Only land borders are closed. Those who export from Thailand should send directly to our ports instead of channelling through Togo/Benin for smuggling into Nigeria. I don't see why this is too much to ask.

Going through the posts have me another dimension in viewing Nigerians.

As far as other countries are hit hard by this decision they don't care even though the policy is a double-edged sword.

If all those Rice was produced in Nigeria.
Imagine the money that would flow to the people.

So many countries are eating from our foolishness.

No more.

You get the drift
This is the major reason for underdevelopment and poverty in Africa
We use our scarce foreign earnings to enrich other countries

Do they know how much dollars CBN uses weekly to maintain Naira rate stability
If Naira is not defended
It will lose value
Because we are an importing Nation, importing almost everything Nigerian importers will be seeking dollars to buy goods at the international markets
To get dollars they exchange it with Naira
And because Naira is chasing the dollar. It depreciates

In addition our borders are too porous due to land connection
Benin republic then imports through there ocean and smuggle into Nigeria
Which is double wickedness
Even government loose revenue on top

Government should keep the closure till indefinite simple
Its total bleed for the economy
Until our neighbours go get sense.

The government is the cause of the smuggling. The import duty is a merciless 60% hence the smuggling.

Yes the import duty should be high
To discourage import and encourage local production

try and be patriotic for once, America is a great country because the average American will always choose the American product over imported even when the foreign one is better. Must you eat rice?
No body said shutting down the border is a bad thing. The federal Government should also assist the local farmers to get the required seeds for plantation.

There is NO ban on imported rice through our ports. Always, always
.do your research before posting. Imported rice cannot land Nigeria below N15,500 per bag. That's why some guys are smuggling. If everyone imports rice through OFFICIAL and legal points of entry, Nigeria will make a minimum of N350bn in duties.

There's nothing wrong in importing rice and chicken if the fundamentals calls for it.

Does Nigeria have comparative advantage in rice production? Capital no. That is why rice can be imported into Benin Republic, transported all the way to Niger Republic, smuggled into Nigeria and profits are still made. Production has never been Nigeria's problem but the lack of comparative advantage.

The British tried to encourage local farmers to plant rice but they were unenthusiastic. Their preference were cocoa, palm oil, rubber and so on. Those were the areas Nigeria had comparative advantage in then and the farmers and the country flourished and the country still hacks back to those days.

It has been estimated that Nigeria can earn as much as $2b just from exporting sheabutter alone. Snails if fully developed can earn as much as $2b. Thailand gets as much as $1.8b a year from farmed shrimp. The country is neglecting what it is good at and pouring resources where it sucks at.

You do best in what you're good in and fare badly in what you're bad at.
Nigeria has no comparative advantage/ production for Rice? You must definitely be typing far away in Asia

What if these herdsmen ravaging our farms were truly foreigners bent on sabotaging our local food production to keep us dependent on the import market?

That's the thing with big men

And getting richer

Bollocks! Here's another one. What caves or high-brow towers do some of you live in that you are not aware that there are refined, stone-free Nigerian rice brands in the country which have been doing well? So many smart phones, so many uniformed people. Some of you just loooooooove to complain. On and on and on about what you are obviously so ignorant about. Seek knowledge first.
Funny thing is that some of you have been eating made in Nigerian rice for years but are non-the-wiser since anything in a package is referred to by you as "foreign rice." Learn.
