There's nothing wrong in importing rice and chicken if the fundamentals calls for it.

Does Nigeria have comparative advantage in rice production? Capital no. That is why rice can be imported into Benin Republic, transported all the way to Niger Republic, smuggled into Nigeria and profits are still made. Production has never been Nigeria's problem but the lack of comparative advantage.

The British tried to encourage local farmers to plant rice but they were unenthusiastic. Their preference were cocoa, palm oil, rubber and so on. Those were the areas Nigeria had comparative advantage in then and the farmers and the country flourished and the country still hacks back to those days.

It has been estimated that Nigeria can earn as much as $2b just from exporting sheabutter alone. Snails if fully developed can earn as much as $2b. Thailand gets as much as $1.8b a year from farmed shrimp. The country is neglecting what it is good at and pouring resources where it sucks at.

You do best in what you're good in and fare badly in what you're bad at.

Sound argument. Only thing I would add for clarity is that importers of rice and other products need to pay fair duties so the government can generate revenue for investment in key areas that will continue to improve our competitiveness. Smuggling through the border must be eradicated at all costs as it makes the comparative advantage math unfair.

don't mind him... no body is angry because the border is locked up,,, but because there is no enough local rice to go round the nation ND as such it becomes expensive
how will u buy a bag of local rice for 18k. then how much is minimum wage?

we are not producing enough then u quickly import foreign rice into the government warehouse then close the border quickly because u want to make money for the pooor citizens heads.... that is wickedness, ..

if the rice cheap self e for good we for still happy chew the stone way day inside

The government is the cause of the smuggling. The import duty is a merciless 60% hence the smuggling.

Rice is a staple food. It is not a luxury for a few rich people that you can decide to overlook.
We cannot keep losing billions and billions of dollars to its imports.

We need to start encouraging local production.

Thai and Indian business men are already bringing their improved seeds to plant in Nigeria.
The border closure is a blessing . It will bring FDI into Nigeria. Dangote and Coscharis are going into rice big. OLAM and STALLION are already making big.
If anyone criticizes Buhari fo.r closing border, you have my permission to curse him

There is everything wrong with it. Why must we buy it a high price in the first place? The whole idea of limiting importation of foreign rice is to boost the local production. It makes no sense that we are buying the locally made rice at a higher price when we can buy the foreign counterpart at a lower. They need to give the farmers more incentives to produce at a lower cost instead of making policies that is making life harder than it already is for the average Nigerian.

We is poor masses victimising themselves and that is as a result of government failure in regulating people's activity

Most of these govt agencies are useless. Thats the duty of argic research institute to do, get the seeds n try growing them, studying n how next step before dispensing to farmers to grow. Year in year out, they do nothing

I don't know where you got your rice from. The lake rice I bought last year was totally stone free. The Coshcaris rice I bought a few months ago, I have not come across a single stone. All are made in Nigeria

Yes. I also heard Innoson Group and some others have looked in the direction of large Rice production using world class machineries. We will get used to our products over time and just like you said, foreign investors would step in.

The price will definitely go up before it stabilizes.
It is expected
Demand and supply at work here

But when glo came in, they crashed the price,
Competition will crash the price

See ishi I have criticized this government
But on this one they got it right
