lol you are funny.. comments so far have not been able to convince me why we should be weary of men or boys with dreads, especially those who look good on dreads

I don't believe the problem is the dreadlocks... As I highlighted in your comment, the issue is the set of individuals that glamorize or abuse it, and we both know most Nigerians are not intellectually or liberally sound enough not to stereotype.

I am almost certain no one will really harass or ostracize any man with well groomed, neat, and properly kept dreads or any hairstyle for that matter.

Well, if I was living in a white country, and shaved my head and was a white man, in some parts , I might be considered a skinhead, a violent type of racist.

And if I let my hair grow long, as a white man, some whites may consider me an unserious person, with no future ambition

Over a hundred years ago, a soldier without a mustache in the UK was considered a weakling.

It isn't only Nigeria.
Ofcourse, that doesn't mean they are right.

However, That perceptions have changed Recently. Labelling anyone as weakling can be classed as bullying

Thesedays people are not judged by how they look in white man's countries, unlike in Nigeria.

And as a Hetrosexual, bisexual,Transvestite, gender fluid, gay, lesbian, muslim, christian, sikk, Hindu, Jewish, Mixed raced man and woman. I may be offended. grin grin You get my drift?

Hello Nairalanders, I have been searching for reasons why most Nigerians have a phobia and dislike for boys and men with dreadlocks and I can’t find any credible reason.

Their reasons are senseless and baseless, most Nigerians tend to vilify boys and men with dreadlocks because for some people, dreads hairstyle doers can be very terrifying and they are adjudged to be criminals which is not always true.

In this part, I think it is a crime for a man to pursue happiness.. Nigerians have failed to take into consideration the dynamism in fashion because I wondered why the dread hairstyles where not present in the days of our fathers but the Afro hairstyle was appreciated and considered responsible during that era.

Our ethical compass as a nation have been destroyed because in recent times we have seen people under the guise of sheep and heavenly clothing commit grievous crimes.

Nigerian Parents who have lost their youths should allow the current youth to live theirs. fashion is dynamic and dreads are natural and beautiful... In fact dreads are africanlike, because they defined our appearance and blackness during ancient times as they added to our aesthetic value.

Nairalanders! let us begin to accept people with dreadlocks and see them as civil and normal citizens.. stop the stereotyping..

We did everything to look normal. Dreadlock people are mad people

Not true. Many dreadlockers had dread from birth hence would you say they are irresponsible?

Becos we don't know the difference between dreadlocks and dada and becos some are dirty. When I was still in Uni, there was this guy who had one on...he always looked dirty on the face. I doubt if he even had friends. One day I entered the bathroom to bath, there he was washing the dread. Immediately I entered he started flinging the dread and the water on the dread started splashing all over the place. I ran for my dear life without bathing becos I didn't want that water from his hair to touch me.
After that semester, he cut the dread and started looking more reasonable. Good for him.

Another scenario, I wanted to enter bike. The Okada man already had a guy on the bike with dread or dada (I don't know the difference biko) but it looked so rough and dirty. Immediately I saw him, I told the bike man I wasn't going anymore becos I didn't want to sit at the back of the guy. In my mind, I didn't want to start perceiving unpleasant smell all through the journey.

I have nothing against dread or dada but if you must carry one PLEASE keep it clean. Buy hair creams and perfume and spray on it. That way people will love to have you around them.

My 2cent.

Op you live in an hypocritical and judgemental society. Many Nigerians would easily frown at men on dreadlocks but would smile at ladies with such looks. A natural treated dreadlocks to me isn't bad but to many it is irresponsibly

It is opviourse that we don't overstand that God recognises dreadlocks right from the time of old, read in the bible you will see that most of those great men used by God where all dread?
I don't want to say much, but take note there is no strong prophet of old that did not carry Dreadlocks. And God love them most.

When my younger brother was carrying one, I pass him on the road without talking to him. Even though his was nice and short, Mehn, I don't just like it.

He is a musician though but until he blows and is well known, we will continue to pass each other on the road.

The reason is similar to that of a girl with tattoo. One would feel for the girl to have tattoo on, it shows she's from a family where the parents can tolerate anything if they are able to tolerate this, one would wonder if she even brings boys to come and Bleep her in her parent's house, club and get drunk and banged anyhow because they're too tolerant that they allowed to her to tat her body.
Same goes with dreadlocks, it shows the guy's parents that are able to tolerate this can tolerate their son smoking Igbo, bringing olosho home, etc. Dreadlocks and tattoos show the type of home a person is from and people won't trust such people because they would see them as thieves, armed robbers, prostitutes, etc because they're are seen as not well brought up.
But op,is it that you guys on dreadlocks do it cos you don't like combing your hair?
