You are a Nigerian by birth, you just went for a postgraduate course there, you ain't a citizen of that country so you can't apply from another person's country. I guess

Yes, very very possible.. Nigerian by birth and on a Nigerian passport you will be issued a visa. Within the duration of the postgraduate study, he or she will apply at any of his break season.

I spoke to someone on getting a tourist is visa.
He asked me to get an invite letter from my folks and told me to use documents from my school to prove that I have things going on for myself here, and that'd I'd come back to resume school immediately my break is over.
Does anyone know how I can go about that?

Not correct. I have renewed Visas before expiration. All they do is cancel the old visa and issue another one.
