I'm thinking of taking the bold step of moving out of my host's place and secure my own place, but the challenge is that, I'm not earning much at the moment (around 50k) .

I will like to hear from fellow Nairalanders, share your experience please. What are the challenges and benefits that come with living alone?
PS: I'm not comfortable here.

guy find for people willing to share rent for a two or three bedroom flat(those looking for room mates)

it is easier like that

I don't work for anyone, this year i learnt some skills and earn more than $2k/$4k monthly on my online business, so getting a good fully furnished apartment isn't a biggie to me.

Go and hustle instead of being a slave for a moderfvcker.
My mindset. Wouldn't b bad to actually learn this profitable skill though

I had heard that if your monthly salary cannot take care of your annual rent, then that accommodation is beyond your means.

Back then I was earning about 80k from my regular job and about $250 from my side hustle.

The rent was 400k per year since its a serviced apartment. They take care of everything for you.

Was I able to pay the rent the next time it expired?

Yes... I knew my hustle would bloom... So it wasn't much of an issue...

The difference between my rent and my earnings now is several thousands of dollars... And I don't work full time again.

So you can calculate yours and make sure that your rent doesn't take more than 30% of your annual rent.
400K/yr for a serviced apartment? shocked shocked
Where's that pls

Here in Abuja, any serviced apartment less than 2M/yr must be suffering from either epileptic power supply or poor security or unkept enviroment or all mentioned. I stayed in one I paid 1.6M two years ago but was meant to pay unnecessary dues all through the year(if it's not security, it's transformer or AEPB dues else dustbins will spill and smell).

Meanwhile a friend/colleague staying in 2M apartment was enjoying even free DSTV subscription every quarter as additional peck of his rentage. No be person told me to change the next year as I calculated all the monthly dues I paid and it amounted to 2.3M when added to my actual rent.

Na to build my own sure pass now. Can't buy all these poorly built apartments selling all around here relatively cheap though

I make double of that monthly and do not pay House rent, but relatively saved less
Check your lifestyle. I went broke because of my lifestyle at a time and ever since then I vowed never to be broke again. How did I do it; 1. I stopped doing relationships, 2. I buy only what I need and not what I want 3. I vowed not to change my lifestyle to my taste even if I earn more. 4. I figure out where my money is going before I release it. 5. I vowed never to spend my raw cash again on necessary things but profit from investment. 6. I don't give out my money for no reason aside charity 7. I don't borrow people money, I ain't no bank. 8. I drank less( alcohol and beverages) only water please or free drinks. 9. I lived below my means( I decide to stay in mushin when I can afford to live in surulere, though I have moved now. 10. I kept less friends. 11. I became an introvert( very difficult but I just had to). 12 I became very stingy. ( Very rich men are very stingy). Do just 3 of these twelve things and you will be surprised how much you will be able to save in a year.

Ideally one-third of your annual basic salary is expected to cover up for the expected annual rents, that the flexibility rule on financial prudency.

Well, presently my place costs about 200 Yearly.

My salary is same as yours. Though I have a side business which fetches me double of what I earn from time to time.. But I planned ahead and saved up before securing the apartment.

There's no set time for getting your own apartment. If you know you are not extravagant, you can spend on things of priority and cultivate a habit of saving. Also, look for a side hustle.
Pls wats d area n Wat kind of apartment is it?

Your earn is somewhat too small, you need to be mindful of your rent.
You have no business with anything other than a single room and if the single room is even expensive depending on your location, I will advise you to find a room mate.
Please, the economy is hard and you really need to minimize expenses at every available opportunity.

As per my experience, while I was in the university I stayed with a friend in my 100 level days but due to her lifestyle and the misunderstanding that played out and also for the fact that i am a very private kind of person but didn't have anything like 'privacy' I had to get another apartment and the experience was sooo awesome. A lot of freedom/satisfactions come with living alone but one needs to pay attention to the economy too.

I currently stay in an apartment that is like 3 times my basic salary and I am enjoying it, but it's easier as a lady because I have very little financial responsibility.
Are u just trying 2 please or this is really u.. if its u.. then m so impressed.. I don't expect intelligent comment like dis from women of this generation..
